Let's be very clear: most of us were horrified that the Italians made such an ugly car front. But since we allow for the possibility that someone will like it too, we will start the story from the roots and from the inside. There, opinions were much more unanimous, although in friendly conversations we always quickly returned to the nose and - again - stank.

At the rear, the designers had a much happier hand, as the combination of square shape and black suits this car. This makes it not only more elegant, but also lower. Unfortunately, the back door is heavy, so our fragile best halves will struggle pretty hard before being successfully closed. The trunk is excellent: the large rectangular one can easily fit children's bicycles, so we added one big plus to it.

Also useful is a shelf solution that can divide the square space into two parts, at the height of the roller shutter or in the middle of the trunk. We can place up to 70 kilograms on this shelf, but I ask you not to take this into account on the top step. During a collision, you will get those 70 kilograms (or several times 70 kilograms!) In your head, which is neither pleasant nor safe. The only thing

in Doblo we lacked a movable back bench. If he had it, he would have gotten a clean A in school, so we only gave him a four.

And a few words about the flexibility of the cabin: if the test Doblo had individual seats instead of a classic bench, it would definitely be better. The rear doors, which slide on both sides for greater ease of use, require a bit more power to open from the inside, so kids will have quite a bit of trouble getting out on their own. But maybe everything was perfect - is it worth attributing this to active safety?

It is easy to meet a basketball player in the front seats, because there is really a huge space above your head. Part of it is occupied by a useful box above the heads of the front passengers, but it is still a space the size of a small warehouse. Since the storage space around the driver was very modest, there is also a shelf at the top of the dashboard, although many small items slide to the ground during acceleration. The driving position is good when you subtract the distance between the clutch pedal and the accelerator pedal. If we adjusted the correct grip distance, the throttle was too close; however, if we wanted the correct position of the right foot, the grip was too far. Did they take Volkswagen for a model that has had this feature for a century?

The monotony of the interior is partly disturbed by the two-tone combination, and the rich furnishings always create a good mood. They did not miss anything in Doblo, since he had a parking sensor (rear), a hill holder system, cruise control, a speakerphone, four airbags, an ESP stabilization system ... At the wheel, Doblo could not hide his roots. The engine was too loud, and some decibels popped out from under the tires right into the ears of the passengers. The combination of a 99-kilowatt turbo diesel and six-speed manual transmission is excellent only up to highway speeds, and then, due to the large frontal area, the Doblo shrinks significantly.

It's like pushing it down with a full trunk and a trailer attached to it, when torque is more important at lower speeds than muscle at higher speeds. The gearbox has long travels, but it is a warm and pleasant companion. It only requires a little more care and auditory stamina on a cold morning, when the gears crack a little with each hug. The start-stop system works perfectly, only the aforementioned loud engine is heard and felt when it takes the reins again.

So if centimeters are important to you, Doblo has a lot of them inside. In length, width and, above all, in height. You just have to use them.

Overall rating (304/420)

  • Add inches in and out of the trunk and you'll notice you've won the top prize at Doblo. If we didn't have the feeling at the wheel that he looks more like a courier than we would attribute to him at first glance, I would have gotten a point more.

  • Exterior (9/15)

We're not going to say right away that it's ugly, but it's definitely special.

  • Interior (98/140)

Very spacious interior with a large trunk, relatively many standard and optional equipment.

  • Engine, transmission (45

    / 40)

Great engine requiring 35 XNUMX miles maintenance, mid-range drivetrain and chassis.

  • Driving performance (50

    / 95)

Reliable, but average position on the road, poor directional stability.

  • Performance (25/35)

The engine will definitely not disappoint.

  • Security (32/45)

    Airbags, ESP, start assist ...

  • Economy (45/50)

We cannot be satisfied with the average fuel consumption of 8,7 liters, much less the guarantee below average.
