Test: Ford EcoSport ST-Line 1.0 EcoBoost 103 kW

Years go by. Four years ago, Ford unveiled its first generation of a small crossover, for which a rather off-road look was prepared. He was a little late for us, and this is one of the reasons why this thorough refreshment will be even more welcome. Mainly because buyers are literally "headlong" into buying such cars in the past few months.

Set high, with a fairly tall cab and a spare on the outside on the tailgate that opens to the side, the most important moves belonged to the first generation. They remain, though you'll be hard-pressed to find a replacement bike among newer or newly registered EcoSports. We don't really need it in today's tailgate traffic! And if it's not, the EcoSport is what I've already mentioned, the shortest of the useful hybrids. During the refurbishment, Ford also slightly improved the appearance of the exterior, and the buyer can also choose equipment with the ST-Line marking. It emphasizes the accessories of the mentioned equipment line a little more - in a style known from other Ford variations on the same theme, from the Fiesta, Focus or Kuga.

Of course, the spaciousness has not changed compared to its predecessor. Ford found that EcoSport customers needed more and better equipment than they originally offered. Thorough improvements have been made, one of which is that the EcoSport is now produced by one of the European factories, their newest in Romania, where it replaced the less successful small minivan B-Max. “Europeanization” suits him well, since now the materials used in the interior also give an impression of good quality. A complete redesign of the driving functions is also a step in the right direction. We now access most of the settings via the infotainment system centered on the center screen. The set on the screen depends on which equipment we choose. The base model with a 4,2 "or medium screen with a 6,5" screen does not have all the features, but it is commendable that by choosing the 340 "in combination with a radio with DAB and a USB port for only XNUMX euros you get smartphone connectivity. ... EcoSport supports both Apple CarPlay and Google's Android Auto. We have to thank Ford for not being one of those who wanted to bundle fully useful infotainment accessories into a package that would require a large premium from the customer. For example, those who have smartphones, such as motorists, really don't need navigation.

In particular, it's worth noting that Ford offers true luxury accessories with the ST-Line equipment version - part-leather seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel (it's the only one cut off at the bottom of this version). In addition to the exterior accessories and better interior hardware, the ST-Line also features 17-inch larger rims and a different, stiffer chassis or suspension setup, but our test riders had a few extra 18-inch rims. 215/45. This of course reduces comfort, but for some it means more to the good looks of larger bikes… The result is definitely much tighter passenger handling when we ride the EcoSport on average Slovenian roads. In just a few minutes, the driver gets used to avoiding the biggest bumps in the road. In the same basket (eng. Beauty before function) we can add the equipment that was added for our EcoSport test for an additional fee - style package 4. It was “packed” with a rear spoiler, additionally tinted windows and xenon headlights. Every EcoSport customer who wants to better illuminate the road in front of him will pay an additional 630 euros for this. If we are talking about good driving, we must definitely mention the excellent handling that is already characteristic of European Ford products.

The only thing left from its predecessor in the current EcoSport is the almost unchanged space and usability. For such a short car, it is truly exemplary, spacious and practical, as well as agile, especially when parking. The feeling of spaciousness and comfort up front is certainly the same as larger rivals, and there's plenty of room for rear passengers. The trunk is actually quite suitable, it is a little larger due to the abandoned spare wheel, which, as already mentioned in the introductory part, can be accessed from the outside of the tailgate. Opening the doors to the side (they are located in the left corner of the car) has its advantages and disadvantages - inconvenient if there is not enough space to open completely due to parked cars, otherwise access can also be easier.

The present is the time when diesels are predicted to have a bad future. That's one reason why this EcoSport is trending: Ford's 103-liter turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine now offers 140 kilowatts, or XNUMX "horsepower" (a slight surcharge is required to increase power). It's definitely jumpy enough and we're happy with what it offers in all driving conditions. Somewhat less impressive are its fuel consumption figures. If we want to get closer to the official average consumption figures, we must drive very patiently and carefully, and each slightly more determined pressure on the gas quickly increases the usual average consumption per liter or more.
