Test: Hyundai Elantra 1.6 CVVT Style

Why Luck? Firstly, the i30 station wagon with a new look does not exist yet, so the gap between the four-door newcomer and the five-door i30 of the same name would be too large, and secondly, Lantra / Elantra, together with Pony, created this Korean brand in Europe, so people remember this. with joy. But this is priceless, we would say in a famous commercial.

You're right, Lantras were mostly vans and the new Elantra is just a sedan that doesn't have many fans in our locales. However, it should be noted that the Elantra is only sold in certain European markets, as they originally only wanted to sell it in Korea and the US. Since sales there are more than successful (huh, let someone else say that only large limousines are sold in the US), even after pressure from some (mostly southern and eastern) European exchanges, they did not want to go to the old continent. at first.

Thank goodness they changed their minds, as the new Elantra is beautiful, big enough for the average European family and, despite the theoretically worse rear chassis, is also perfect for our roads.

Look at the exterior and you will notice that it looks a lot like the i40, which can only be considered a good thing.

There might be some confusion when the i40 sedan version hits the roads, but honestly, at least in terms of size, there's no reason to wait for a bigger sibling. The dynamic yet consistent moves are capturing the attention of many, and many of us will buy the new Hyundai because we like it, not because it will be affordable.

Unfortunately, there is no version for a van, and you have few options, since there is only one engine in the price list. Upset? There's no reason for that unless you're a big fan of diesel rumble and smelly hands after refueling, although the high torque and low consumption of turbo diesels cannot be ignored.

The 1,6L petrol engine is brand newmade of aluminum alloy and equipped with a double CVVT system. I have to admit that I was impressed, though not strong enough to rip the steering wheel out of my hands, and not thrifty enough to forget the last time I was at the gas station.

I liked it because of its smooth operation, as it runs completely silently up to 4.000 rpm, and then it even becomes a little louder than a sports one. There is enough torque to drive around town in just two gears, and above all, the ride and the excellent synchronization between the clutch, throttle and gear lever are impressive.

Perfect softness of work: the throttle is like a BMW on the heel, the clutch is soft and predictable, and the transmission is quick and precise despite the artificial feel. I can certainly confirm in good conscience that the Elantra is a very pleasant car for everyday use, although the semi-rigid rear axle starts to behave quite differently when the rear end is filled with luggage.

The engine and six-speed transmission won't mind if you hit a clean and empty corner even at higher speeds, but the rear axle and especially the tires of the heavy right leg aren't as favorable. Especially on wet and undulating roads, the driving experience will not be the most pleasant, so I personally would change the tires first, since, for example, we barely got out of our service garage during the first rain. However, as the traffic congestion gets worse, this will not happen very often, so you can sleep peacefully: even your wife, although she may not be the most experienced driver, will fall in love with Elantro.

It grows to the core due to the soft chassis, which is not too soft, gentle handling, which, despite the indirect power steering, does not completely eliminate contact with the road, and, above all, because of the precise handling. Hyundai has taken a really big step forward here as we are no longer just talking about driving, but about a pleasant ride.

If they cared about driving position an inch lower, they wouldn't be offended. Up to 180 centimeters will still go away, and taller drivers will probably really have to opt for the larger Hyundai model if you want to sit comfortably – or perhaps put a child in the back. In terms of safety, the Elantra is well-equipped, as it comes standard with everything you need from an Avto store.

All Elantras have four airbags, two air curtains and standard ESP, and our test car also had steering wheel buttons for cruise control and a radio with CD player and three interfaces (AUX, iPod and USB). Dual-zone automatic air conditioning and almost all-leather seats are considered an added plus, and we missed the front parking assist sensors.

Apparently, they forgot the hook on the trunk, since you can open it only with a button on the ignition key or with a lever at the driver's doorstep. Even the backrests of the rear seats can only be folded out of the boot, and even then they are split in a ratio of 1 / 3-2 / 3 and do not allow a flat bottom in the increased luggage compartment. However, the trunk is checked for a family of four, you only have to count on the narrow hole of the limousine.

Although the engine consumed an average of 8,5 liters, the on-board computer printed 7,7 liters and promised a range of around 600 kilometers. If we hadn’t taken measurements and driven on unoccupied mountain roads to check the chassis and tires, we would probably easily live a month with an average consumption of seven to eight liters. This is acceptable, especially considering that we felt very good at the wheel.

So despite the petrol drive and less attractive sedan shape (at least in our market), we are raising our thumb in favor of the new Hyundai. Common sense dictates that a Hyundai new product with the correct name meets the needs of the average Slovenian family.

What a surprise. How many cars can you get in a Hyundai called Elantra for your money? Okay, interior design has opponents too, but it cannot be denied that this is a powerful, reasonably quiet and fuel efficient motorized vehicle that offers a lot of comfort, space and comfort in the cabin. Definitely a lot more than it should be given its price. Hyundai, caravan please!

Overall rating (333/420)

  • Hyundai Elantra was a real surprise, because we were waiting for another sedan and got a nice and comfortable car. If you don't mind the sedan and petrol engine design, the Elantra is likely the right answer for your mobility.

  • Exterior (13/15)

Interesting, not to say, a pretty good car, and a well-made one.

  • Interior (105/140)

The Elantra has a little more room in the cabin than some competitors (except for height), and the trunk is among the smaller ones. A few small notes on ventilation, excellent build quality.

  • Engine, transmission (50

    / 40)

Good engine and transmission, there are still some reserves in the steering system. The chassis is loved by calm drivers who value comfort above all else.

  • Driving performance (57

    / 95)

The position on the road is average after a dry one, but on a wet road I would like to have different tires.

  • Performance (25/35)

Despite the smaller volume and without forced charging, the engine turns out, like the gearbox. Would it be even better with better tires?

  • Security (36/45)

From a safety standpoint, the Elantra has proven itself as it has all the basic systems that auto shop owners need. For the active, there may be more (extra) equipment.

  • Economy (47/50)

Excellent XNUMXx XNUMX-year warranty, due to greater loss of gasoline engine value, slightly higher fuel consumption.
