Test: Hyundai i30 1.6 CVVT Premium

If you know the aforementioned video of the Volkswagen boss checking the interior of the new i30, then you know he praised it. He didn’t actually praise a competitor, but did share a few photos with his subordinates, who huddled around him like greedy sheep at the Hyundai showroom at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Why We Don't Know This, was one of the comments, and we survived the day when the boss of a famous car brand flew around a competitor's window, instrument in hand. A year ago, we laughed at this story in front of Asian engineers.

Hyundai i30 At first, it impresses the average consumer with its looks. While until recently we preferred Kia cars that were technically similar but bolder in design than Hyundai, the i30 is different. Hyundai developed this car in Germany and made it in the Czech Republic with the only thought that Europeans would like it.

It's safe to say that they succeeded. The mask of the car emphasizes dynamism, the interesting shape of the headlights has already become an integral part, the folds on the hips at the height of the door handles and the rounded rear end - the point on the i. Many of us believe that the i30 is even the most beautiful Hyundai of all time and certainly a worthy brother to the already successful i40 and Elantra.

Pravdin Elantra guilty yes i30 this is not the first Hyundai vehicle with a new look in this vehicle class. As you probably already know, the Elantra is just a four-door i30, traditionally called an Elantra, not an i30 sedan or i30 4V. And if you read the test of this machine in the 22nd issue more than six months ago, you already know that it is at least technically good and excellent for the price. Although the Slovenian market is definitely not the most suitable for a four-door sedan.

When you get behind the wheel, you can easily understand why the Volkswagen boss scolded his subordinates. The circular gauges are transparent and pleasing, the steering wheel buttons are pleasing (unlike the Kia), and the inside of the door, in addition to the seats, was trimmed with leather.

Don't miss the details: the pedals in the best equipment are aluminum and the gas is modeled after the driver's heel, the automatic air conditioning has a double label for conditioning (fast and soft or fast and gentle) and closed. the box in front of the passenger is cooled if desired. The bottom of the center console has plenty of interfaces for an iPod and a USB drive, cruise control, a hands-free system, and power to all four windows should not be missing.

From a safety standpoint, you can sleep well: Hyundai offers four airbags and side airbags on all versions of the i30, as well as a driver's knee airbag from the Style package (the third of four possible). ESP stability control and hill start assist are also available in all versions, so it comes as no surprise that together with a rigid base structure and folded zones managed to reach five stars in the Euro NCAP test crashes. To this pampering, which costs significantly more for other brands, some of us only commented that the seats could have been better as they were too soft for some and with too weak sidewalls.

Softness is also the word that best describes the chassis. The individual front suspension and multi-link rear axle perfectly overcome all the bumps in the road, but at the same time very effectively prevent the transmission of noise from under the car to the passenger compartment. But don't think he's too soft; time bounces Hyundai Pony (although it was a great machine in those days, one that opened the way to the hearts of many still loyal customers today), they are finally over.

While I would give the suspension and damping a five for a smoother ride, the disadvantages of a more dynamic ride do show up. There is a little more to be done here to become a truly worthy competitor to the European cars that carry you thirsty across the sea. In extreme maneuvers, there is no such feeling as they give golf in Astra, not to mention Фокус.

A lap at the Nurburgring with a good test driver and intelligent engineer could also bring a spiky i30 in the near future, for example with the new 1,6-liter turbocharged petrol engine already passed on to Veloster and detailed in a previous issue. It would be the right car to raise the brand image and selfishness of the driver ...

The transmission and power steering are additional reasons why I just imagined an improved chassis and a more powerful engine in this car, something I hadn't even dared to think about at Hyundai until now. The manual six-speed transmission is quick, precise and just plain smooth to use, its only fault perhaps being too artificial a feel for those who breathe cars. It feels and hears when the gears get stuck, but it lacks the authenticity that, say, the Focus offers.

Another highlight is the power steering, where you can choose between three programs: Normal, Comfort and Sport, or Home Normal, Sport and Comfort. With a button on the steering wheel, you can imagine the softness of the front wheels in parking, normal operation when driving on the highway and sporty straightness on the highway.

The small print has a great idea; While the steering system is accurate enough for the average driver, it's still not enough for the demanding one. The simple hard work of a servo is not yet a reason to celebrate victory in a war, but the engineers have certainly won the battle thanks to the aforementioned system. Yes, Hyundai is really changing, and quickly and, no doubt, in the right direction.

However, in some technical matters, they can serve as examples. Let's say a rearview camera: some competitors have it above the license plate and are therefore exposed to weather and dirt, while in the i30 it drops below the mark when reverse gear is engaged. Better yet, the location of the screen, which conveys what is happening behind the car: some competitors offer information to the driver through a screen on the center console, while Hyundai has used part of the rearview mirror.

These solutions have two good sides: the camera is less susceptible to external influences and the driver's gaze when reversing is directed towards the rearview mirror, and not towards the console. Smart thinking! Just be a little careful at first, as many of the users of this car have replaced the Hyundai lift sign with a luggage compartment hook (which is a really common solution nowadays), and above all there are data size limits. transmission through the rear-view mirror. You see, the screens on the center console are disproportionately larger than the interior mirror in the more equipped versions.

Boot space is 378 liters, 38 liters or 11 percent more than its predecessor. In other words: 28 liters more than the Golf, 13 liters more than the Focus, eight more than the Astra and 37 liters less than the Cruz. When the back bench is folded (in a ratio of 1/3–2/3), the bottom is nearly flat.

The smoothness and maneuverability of the engine is also surprising given the more modest volume (1.6) and the charging method (atmospheric). Of course, this is not a jumper, and even more so a breaker, but with quiet operation (in fact, very quiet, which can be attributed to the already mentioned excellent sound insulation) and good torque throughout the entire operating range, the driver modestly pampers. Along with the precise accelerator and clutch pedals, it is very comfortable for the driver and even my little one who likes to have a racing license will be happy with it.

Of course, a bouncy two-liter turbodiesel or naturally aspirated 1,6-liter gasoline engine would not protect, but even the 88-kilowatt engine mentioned above is not from flies. This engine is (at the moment) the best in the range, as the “turbo” mark is not yet available for gasoline engines, and for a turbodiesel, the displacement is also limited to a good XNUMX liters. Hopefully, this is just the beginning, and Hyundai will not be content with such small volumes ...

The only downside to the engine on the test car was fuel consumption; indeed, we did not pay attention to it until the last day, but with a normal daily trip it was about nine liters. Now we know where torque and agility come from ...

The Hyundai i30 is a big step for Hyundai in the lower middle class, as is the i40 in the upper middle class. While the i40's performance wasn't as good as expected due to a less competitive price and worse image, the outlook for the i30 is much better.

You might be tempted by a three-year, five-year warranty (total no miles, roadside assistance, and free preventive check-ups), perhaps modernly designed eyes and, most likely, ears and fingers. You just need to close your eyes!

Overall rating (335/420)

  • We've been waiting for the five-door i30 for a long time, but the three-door and van versions will take a little more patience. Result: We were not disappointed, a sharper engine and minor chassis tweaks would have seriously threatened German competitors.

  • Exterior (14/15)

A beautiful and harmoniously designed vehicle that impresses no matter where you look.

  • Interior (106/140)

Selected materials, above average boot size, plenty of comfort and a satisfactory interior design.

  • Engine, transmission (51

    / 40)

Decent engine, good gearbox, variable power steering and chassis not for more demanding drivers.

  • Driving performance (59

    / 95)

Excellent pedals, good shift lever position, slightly worse feel when fully braked. In short, not for the fast ones.

  • Performance (21/35)

Hey, a naturally aspirated 1,6-liter engine lacks anything (unless the flow is too high), but a two-liter engine would not have resisted.

  • Security (36/45)

Don't worry about passive safety, and there could be a little more active safety. You know, xenon, the blind spot prevention system ...

  • Economy (48/50)

Fuel economy aside, this is the most powerful kit in the i30, with a great warranty and a tempting price for the base model.
