Test: Kia Picanto 1.2 MPI EX Style

Now with the Picant, a lot can be spicy, the list of equipment is long and amazing. Thus, compared to the average offering in this class, Picanto is like Tabasco in food that outperforms all other flavors. It's the same with the Picant, which has only a worthy competitor among the small cars with Up. Like the Up, this one offers a range of pieces of equipment that, until now, were not common in such small cars.

Our Picanto seemed quite enjoyable as it had just about everything Kia had to offer. It also had ESP, which - completely incomprehensible - can only be obtained in the most expensive version of the equipment (EX Style). True, the buyer who resolutely decided to open his wallet (more than 12 thousandths) gets a lot. Even the LED daytime running lights, as well as 14-inch alloy wheels with reduced section tires (60), will improve the appearance.

In addition, there are such nice little things as bluetooth telephony with hands-free function, automatic air conditioning, heated front seats and steering wheel (!), Smart key and engine start button on the dashboard, not to mention it. the most important thing in terms of comfort, which you simply do not expect from such a baby. In addition to the six standard passive safety devices (anti-collision airbags), there is also a knee airbag for the driver and, of course, an active airbag for the front passenger.

So the appeal of this Spicy lies in the hardware. But even if they had chosen one of the less equipped ones, they (with the exception of the ESP) would not have done much wrong, because at Kia they decided not to offer their baby anymore to people who do not have enough money for more. cars, but for those who are in traffic or for some other similar reason, they consciously choose a short and compact car that should in no way cost less than a larger one. However, this approach is one of those facts that deserves special praise.

The list of equipment available in primary school is long and acceptable. Add to that the beautiful looks and the Picanto is arguably the cutest of all small cars.

Otherwise, it should also be noted that this is a completely correctly designed car. Something was missing by the fifth star in the test crash, according to EuroNCAP, with 86% occupant protection and 83% child protection keeping up with the best competitors. In fact, the only thing missing from the Picant is a low-speed automatic braking system. Of course, active safety is also ensured by its good position on the road, which we cannot complain about, as it is excellent, and in the tested version, this was helped by the serial ESP. With the Picant, you can handle even the toughest roads quickly and easily, although we can't expect more comfort as the less-cut tires and short wheelbase are all on their own.

We only have a small comment on the rather vaguely functioning electric steering servo, and this also seems to be a persistent flaw in Kia vehicles. Real contact of the driver through the steering wheel with the tires and the road is not possible, but nowadays game consoles and similar simulators should create a more immediate sensation when driving is already completely "demodulated".

The Picanto is available in two body styles, three and five doors. It was a three-door in our test, so we weren't able to take full advantage of good rear seat access. Being able to access a reasonably spacious rear bench (but only for two passengers) through an additional side door would be an even better alternative to what you can get in the smallest class.

But even without the rear side doors, the Picanto performed well in terms of convenience. Trunk space can be increased by "eliminating" the passenger space in the rear seat, and the space conditions in the front seats are more than satisfactory.

To summarize: Picanto surprises mainly by the fact that in its previous editions we were not used to offering so much acceptable. But of course, the problem for the average Slovenian buyer when choosing this smallest Kia is probably that they already offer longer and more powerful cars for almost the same amount of money of the same brand. Of course, they are not that nimble and not that sharp.

Overall rating (302/420)

  • Picanto is a real luxury among small ones, as is the price.

  • Exterior (12/15)

Perhaps the most beautiful among the kids.

  • Interior (82/140)

Nice layout, comfortable seats, also flexible trunk.

  • Engine, transmission (45

    / 40)

The engine promises more than yes, but it is relatively quiet and less noisy.

  • Driving performance (56

    / 95)

Safe driving position, but not the best braking performance.

  • Performance (23/35)

We expect more from an engine that is powerful according to its specifications.

  • Security (35/45)

Good safety characteristics, but no automatic low speed braking system.

  • Economy (49/50)

Average fuel consumption increases too much even with careful use of the accelerator pedal, even with a large deviation from the norm.

We praise and reproach
