During the first two generations, Rio did not leave an important mark on European buyers, and in the third generation since 2011, it has acquired an important emphasis - convincing design. This was taken care of by the German Peter Schreyer, the spiritual father of sorts for the whole Kia coup, since the brand was a more or less unconvincing Korean brand ten years ago. The design also remained in the hands of the German Peter at the current Rio, which premiered this spring, and the South Korean brand is hard at work to be perceived by buyers as a “spare German”. Last but not least, all Kia executives are very enthusiastic about receiving numerous awards for the quality of their vehicles.

So there are enough starting points for what we're presenting with Kio Rio. Let's see what it offers in practice, that is, on the road. Compared to the previous Rio, the body has only grown slightly, by an inch and a half, the wheelbase is an inch longer. This leads to the conclusion that many things have been preserved and updated. This is especially true for a look that is actually altered enough to distinguish the current one from the previous one, but we only get lucky with it if we put the sample together. Rio's actions remain largely unchanged, retaining the distinctive mask but with a different chrome finish. There are many more changes at the rear, where Schreier's staff with different lines and more beautifully designed headlights were lucky, the Rio looks like a bigger and more serious car. The same is true for the side lines, where we can also notice that a small triangular window was inserted into the rear side door, which allowed the glass to almost completely enter the door.

The interior design approach is also more mature, thanks to sensors with only two round boxes (previously there were three) and a central mini-screen. In the most equipped version of the EX Motion, of course, the most visible touchscreen is at the center of the dashboard. This gives it a modern touch, and the entire infotainment system is also well-designed and at the level of the best in its class. Walking through the menus and connecting to smartphones via CarPlay or Android Auto seem to be fine. The steering wheel spokes with numerous control buttons allow you to control the car without removing your hands from the steering wheel, if you ignore the several "jumps" to the touch screen to change the menu and touch the buttons for the heater and air conditioner, which remained in the same place and completely unchanged.

Interior comfort and usability are also at a reasonable level compared to competitors. The appearance and quality of the interior will convince you, perhaps only a remark about a monophonic black color seems appropriate. The seats look less convincing if we sit in them for a long time, and the first impression isn't too bad, despite the short seating surfaces. Rear seat space is quite acceptable even for the legs and knees of larger passengers. However, we can also report that with two Isofix child seats, there is no longer room for a passenger in the middle. The Rio also has ample and large enough storage space for small items - even a mobile phone. It seems almost completely clear that the raising and lowering of the windows in the side doors is electrified, while the key is classic, that is, with remote control and for a puncture in the steering lock.

Our test Rio hid a base 1,25-liter petrol engine under the hood. This one also remained more or less the same as the previous generation. In fact, given its nominal capabilities, it didn't look promising, especially given our testing experience a few years ago (AM 5, 2012). At that time, we were not satisfied with both the significant fuel consumption and the high noise level during engine operation. The noise remained, and at engine speeds over 3.500 rpm, you will always feel the need to look for a higher gear. But at the highest, fifth, at a speed of about 100 kilometers per hour, this cannot be done. However, he was surprised, this time the fuel economy was much more solid. Already on a normal lap, it took care of the surprise with an average of just 5,3 liters per 100 kilometers, and the Rio finished our entire test with a similarly solid average of 6,9, a liter and a half better than its predecessor. . It should be emphasized that we often drove the small engine at higher revs, but this one (with more noise) also performed well on motorways, even driving the Vrhnika slope on the road to Logatec with appropriate determination.

The chassis seems to be unchanged, and there is nothing wrong with that, as it is completely solid and also withstands a more difficult combination of holes and bumps from Slovenian road cross. But it's pretty loud. The steering wheel is also solid enough and the owner should be keen to avoid any inconvenience due to a puncture while driving, as Kia saves a few euros on a tire change in Rio. However, if any of the four are punctured while driving, the cost of compensation is borne by the owner. He also follows that this should not happen far from home, or at least not at a time when all vulcanizers have closed workshops.

Because of its basic motorization, the Rio is only an average of a wide range of small family cars, so it may not get much praise, but it is mostly a good choice. However, Kia is increasingly losing good reason to continue to be able to live up to its familiar slogan: the car for its money.
