Test: Kia Sorento 2.2 CRDi EX Exclusive

Unlike Hyundai's current Santa Fe sibling, the Sorento didn't have much success in Slovenia despite its 13-year modeling history. This was partly due to its design, especially the first generation, technical obsolescence and too American design. The third generation is a really big step forward compared to its predecessor. Kia's current interior design choices suit it, so the front end is far more appealing to potential buyers than the first or second generation.

Moreover, this applies to the rear of the car. And not only the appearance has become more pleasant for the European look, but also the interior and equipment. European (as well as Slovenian) driver not only in the quality of plastic, but also in partly digital sensors, which are among the best in terms of transparency. And sitting, although I wanted (and this is the first trifle of the name) a slightly longer longitudinal movement of the driver's seat, to the liking of taller drivers and simply because there are no spatial miracles, to the detriment of those in the second row. The second and not the last, of course, is written specially: the Sorento is seven-seater, but here you have to choose between the trunk or the seats, as is usually the case with such seven-seater. Rear access is convenient enough, but the Sorento (and the passengers in it) will still feel much better than a five-seater with a large boot.

Sorento can't hide its origins (or tradition, if you will) in terms of interior design, especially when fitting some switches or their size - but here it no longer deviates from the ergonomic ideal, and in some places is below average (whether European or not) competitor in this class. Leaving the Sorento off the list solely because of its shape or ergonomics, as was the case with previous generations, is a mistake this time around. Since the test Sorento had EX Exclusive equipment, there was no list of optional equipment.

Everything that was in it is included in the standard package and the customer receives a little less than 55 thousand (or less, if he, of course, is a good negotiator). This includes leather on the seats, seat heating and (a little: a little too loud) ventilation, including the best Infinity sound system and very good xenon headlights, safety assistants from inadvertently exiting the seat belt, blind spot monitoring, vision cameras 360 degrees. , traffic sign recognition and much more. There's also cruise control and a speed limiter (not exactly a trifle: stopping the start/stop system shuts off the engine, effectively ruining the entire usability of this gadget). And what about the power plant? The first impression is that the Sorento is quiet enough and fast enough. If the predecessor was able to unpleasantly surprise with the amount of engine noise and wind on the body, now the opposite is true.

As long as you don't rev the engine at high revs, the Sorento will be reasonably quiet (except for some wind noise around the large rear-view mirrors, which is offset by transparency), and the 2,2-litre diesel's torque ensures that the six-speed automatic doesn't have to. so much work. This is good, because the transmission is still the most old-fashioned part of the car. With moderate use, it is imperceptibly friendly, but when the commands with the accelerator pedal are more decisive, it can fluctuate. He is also a little embarrassed by slopes, on the track it may happen that when driving uphill (for example, descending towards Kozina from the side of the coast), while maintaining the set cruising speed, he will start between fifth and sixth gear. .

Fortunately, it does it smoothly enough not to distract attention. The four-cylinder diesel is also quite economical in terms of weight, classic automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, as evidenced by our standard layout, which is expected to be nearly equal to the Grand Santa Fe's fuel consumption. The chassis is, of course, focused mainly on ride comfort, the Sorenta's bumpy road doesn't bother too much, but it's true that you have to get used to a little more lean in corners and a less communicative steering wheel than you'd like. Here the Pri Kii has taken the smallest step up from the old model, but the Sorento will still easily satisfy the average user of a larger SUV. When equipment, mechanics, and price add up, the Sorento is further proof of just how much Kia has changed in the years since the Sorento hit the market. From a brand that produces cars with a low price and a lot of equipment, which, technically and in terms of design, did not even come close to meeting European competitors, to a brand that produces cars that are only slightly different from traditional brands, and most of them belong to a worse car. he won't even notice.

Overall rating (335/420)

  • The new version of the Sorento is one of those Kia models that are more European, although that means they are no longer extremely cheap.

  • Exterior (12/15)

Kia's new design guidelines are written in Sorento leather.

  • Interior (102/140)

There is also enough space for passengers in the back and in the trunk, and the longitudinal movement of the driver's seat is not enough.

  • Engine, transmission (51

    / 40)

The gearbox is an older, indecisive type, and overall the drivetrain is pleasantly competent.

  • Driving performance (54

    / 95)

The chassis is tuned primarily for comfort, don't expect sportiness.

  • Performance (31/35)

On the road, the Sorento looks much more lively than one would expect given the specs.

  • Security (40/45)

Sorrento boasts a good EuroNCAP rating, good lighting and a lot of electronic devices.

  • Economy (41/50)

Sorento does not disappoint in terms of consumption, and considering the package bundle, the price is not overpriced.
