Test: Škoda Fabia 1.2 TSI (81 kW) Ambition

Seven years is also the period that the previous Škoda Fabia spent on the market, and the same applies to the first generation. Thus, for Fabio, the appearance of a new model marks the beginning of the third seven years. So far, Fabia has had certain positions when it comes to form. Both the first and second generation were a little clunky, a little old-fashioned and gave the impression (especially the second generation) that the car was tall and narrow.

Now everything has changed. The new Fabia looks, especially in the pastry color combination, sporty but definitely modern and dynamic. The rather sharp strokes or edges are the exact opposite of the rounded, sometimes indefinite forms of the previous Fabia. This time around, Škoda dealers don't have to worry that the looks will scare off buyers. Quite the contrary, especially if you think of LED daytime running lights next to the projector headlights and a two-tone exterior like in the Fabia test. And yes, the choice of colors is not only large, but also very diverse. The history of the modern and dynamic exterior continues to a lesser extent in the interior.

The Ambition equipment markings denote a brushed metal part of the dashboard that definitely brightens up the interior, while the rest clearly shows which car group Škoda belongs to. The gauges are transparent, but the speedometer has an almost linear scale, making it difficult to see in the city. Fortunately, they include a serial trip computer graphic display that can also display speed numerically, so we did not deduct points when evaluating the Fabia counters. The large 13cm color LCD touchscreen in the center of the dashboard makes it much easier not only to control your audio system (by playing music from your mobile phone via bluetooth), but also to set up other vehicle functions. ...

The Fabia gets a minus (as do many other Volkswagen Group cars) because adjusting the instrument illumination is a complicated process that requires a lot of typing on that LCD screen and the buttons around it. Behind the wheel, the driver will feel good if the length is not particularly pronounced. There, somewhere up to 190 centimeters tall (if you are used to sitting with legs slightly more extended, even a few centimeters less), there will be enough longitudinal movement of the seat, then it ends, although a few centimeters remain behind. It's a pity. The sports seats have a sporty look with quilted fabric and an integrated non-adjustable headrest. This one is still quite tall, but it's true that you can expect a bit more lateral grip from sports seats. There is plenty of room in the back as long as the front seats are not pushed all the way back.

A mid-sized driver (or navigator) can easily be sat by a half-adult child, and four adults, which, of course, is completely normal for this class of cars, will have to squeeze in a little. The Fabia has three head restraints and seat belts in the back, but then again: in such large cars, the central rear seat is clearly an emergency, but at least the Fabia's seat is comfortable enough. The trunk is mostly 330 liters, which is extremely good for the class to which the Fabia belongs - many competitors do not even exceed the number 300. The rear seat is, of course, foldable (it is commendable that the two larger ones are thirds on the right). The downside is that with the rear seat folded down, the bottom of the boot is not flat, but has a noticeable ledge. The bottom is set deep (hence the favorable volume), but due to the fact that it cannot be moved (or because there is no double bottom), the edge over which luggage must be lifted is also quite high.

As with the trunk, there are a few compromises with the chassis – at least with the test Fabia. Namely, it had an optional sports chassis (which costs a good 100 euros), which means a lot of bumps that punch through bumps in the road into the interior of the car. Definitely more than you would want for normal family use. On the other hand, this chassis certainly means less lean in corners for sportier driving, but since the wheels were fitted with winter tires, its benefits weren't apparent. Quite right: for everyday use, it is better to choose a normal chassis. The Fabia test used a 1,2-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which was the more powerful of the two available. That translates to 81 kilowatts or 110 horsepower, making the Fabio a very lively car.

Acceleration in nine seconds to 1.200 km / h, as well as the flexibility of the engine, which pulls from 50 rpm without vibration or other signs of torment, ensure rapid progress, even if the driver is more stingy with gear changes. The six-speed manual transmission is well-timed - sixth gear is thus economically long enough at highway speeds while still being able to reach just over 5,2 kilometers per hour. Soundproofing could be a little better, but since the group has several more expensive models in the Fabia's class, this feature is of course to be expected. But at city speeds, at least when driving steadily, the engine is almost inaudible. Consumption? Gasoline engines certainly fall short of the numbers offered by diesels, so this Fabia didn't set any records on our standard lap, but with XNUMX liters, the figure is still quite favorable.

If you subtract the city kids with semi-weak engines, the Fabia's consumption is exactly the same as the most economical gas stations in our normal circle. Škoda has taken good care of safety. Why is it enough? Because this Fabia has LED daytime running lights, but it does not have a sensor that would automatically turn on the headlights when driving conditions require it. And since the rear LEDs do not light up during daytime running lights, it can cause the car to light up in the rain on the highway. The solution is simple: you can move the light switch to the "on" position and leave it there, but still: Fabia is also proof that regulations do not follow market developments.

Daytime running lights without rear lighting may only be used in conjunction with an automatic headlight sensor. The Fabia compensates by being able to alert the driver of fatigue (via sensors on the steering wheel) and has a built-in automatic emergency braking system as standard (at this and higher equipment level), which first beeps. warn the driver who ignored the danger (detected by the car using the radar ahead) and then brake as well. If you add a speed limiter to this, the list for this class of cars will be quite long (but, of course, not complete). In addition to all of the above, the Ambition package also includes a surcharge for automatic air conditioning (only one-zone), and from the list of additional equipment, as you can see in the photos, there is also a sports multifunctional steering wheel.

And by the way, if you want a Fabia with the same equipment as the test one, then you better think about the Style version. Then you will pay less, you will also get things that you cannot pay for when choosing Ambition (for example, a rain sensor or automatic light), and you will pay a few hundred less ... And the price? If you don't know that Skodas are no longer the cheap and poorly equipped (and manufactured) relatives in the Volkswagen Group, you might be surprised. Judging by the quality and equipment, the damage has increased dramatically, and the price is right, which at the same time means that if you look at the price lists, you will find that it is somewhere in the middle of the class.

Overall rating (324/420)

  • Ample space, large (but not very flexible) trunk, modern technology, good economy and a guarantee. Fabia has really taken a big step forward with the new generation.

  • Exterior (13/15)

This time, Škoda decided the Fabia deserved a more flamboyant and sportier form. We agree with them.

  • Interior (94/140)

The sensors on the large screen of the on-board computer are transparent, they are only disturbed by a complex lighting control. The trunk is large.

  • Engine, transmission (51

    / 40)

The engine is flexible and loves to spin, and 110 “horsepower” is a more than satisfactory number for such a large machine.

  • Driving performance (60

    / 95)

Lego on the road, despite the sporty (and therefore tough, which is very noticeable on our roads) chassis, was damaged by winter tires.

  • Performance (25/35)

With a Fabia like this, you can easily be among the fastest on the move, and you won't be intimidated by the longer, faster highways.

  • Security (37/45)

The Fabia Ambition also earned 5 NCAP stars for its standard automatic braking system.

  • Economy (44/50)

On a normal lap, the Fabia showed favorable low fuel consumption for such a powerful petrol engine.
