Test: Škoda Rapid 1.6 TDI (77 kW) Elegance

Škoda does not hide close ties and cooperation with the Volkswagen Group, and therefore does not attribute all the advantages and models to each other. They openly admit that the small Citigo is an important new addition to Škoda's offering, but that the car is mostly owned by Volkswagen. With Rapid it's different. They borrowed a brand new chassis, a few obsolete components and already installed engines, but the shape, design and workmanship are entirely theirs. With the arrival of Jozsef Kaban and the creation of a new design team consisting of many designers from all over Europe, a new design wind blew in Mladá Boleslav. They created a positive atmosphere, good chemistry and, above all, rolled up their sleeves. They are not afraid of work and challenges, but why would they do it, because Škoda still has an important history and tradition, and, after all, it still safely craves in the lap of Volkswagen.

The first product of the new design team is Rapid. The new design is called timeless. Translated, this would mean that the Rapid is configured with a form that will last forever, especially without time limits, and will last a long time. The shape is fresh yet instantly recognizable. They wanted to create a car that wasn't too big on the outside and not too small on the inside at the same time. The car is distinguished by simple but expressive lines, lack of experiments and unnecessary complications.

The nose of the machine is simple, depending on the equipment it can work very elegantly. The ass hides its mission very well. At first glance it seems (too) narrow, small, but when a person opens the tailgate (yes, the Rapid has five), there is a huge void. In fact, the Rapid offers 550 liters of luggage space, and by folding the rear seat backs, as much as 1.490 liters. And yes, you don't have to search the Internet - we're talking about one of the largest trunks in this class of car.

When describing the interior, one cannot talk about emotions and design excesses. But who in our time can still afford romance and beauty, or even desire it? No, the Rapid's interior is not bad, but it doesn't play with emotions either. However, lovers of simple and neat lines and good ergonomics will immediately fall in love with it. And the quality is above average. You know Volkswagen does it!

Some may stink of the overly hard plastic from which the dashboard is made. But to be honest, I have not yet seen a person leaning on the dashboard while driving and complaining about the hardness of the plastic. However, the aforementioned piece of plastic is made beautifully and of high quality, without unpleasant (too) wide slots, there are no "crickets" and other unwanted rumbles in the car, it has enough space for storing things and boxes. In short, the Rapid is made with German precision. This is only of concern to the top edge of the inner door trim, which is made of the same solid mass and with a slightly too sharp edge, just enough to sting an arm and elbow when they hit the door.

Thanks to the Elegance trim, the test Rapid was fitted with a two-tone instrument panel inside and covered in beige upholstery. The latter is very nice, but nothing special, because a blue mark easily remains on the jeans. The multi-function steering wheel deserves more praise, with just a few buttons enough for convenient radio and telephone control. Namely, the Rapid was (otherwise optional) also equipped with a navigation system and therefore better radio and Bluetooth connectivity. There were no problems with control and telephony in Rapid, although we do not support such tasks in the car (despite the bluetooth connection). You know, some drivers have enough driving problems!

What about the engine? He is an old acquaintance who also successfully "turns" on Audi, Volkswagen and Seat. The 1,6-liter turbodiesel engine boasts direct fuel injection via Common Rail, producing 105 horsepower and 250 Nm.

Enough power for a quiet family ride. However, it should be noted that the Rapid, with a dead weight of 1.265 kg, allows an additional 535 kg in the form of passengers and their luggage. All in all, when fully loaded, this translates to exactly 1.800 kilograms, and to move such a large mass, the performance of the engine is subjected to serious tests. Especially on the highway, when in fifth gear the pressure on the accelerator pedal does not give the desired changes, and the acceleration to a greater or lesser extent falls on the shoulders of the engine torque.

The situation is different at lower speeds and when driving in the city, where there are no problems with traffic or engine. However, the 1,6-liter engine, despite the fact that it only works with a five-speed manual transmission, is bought with low fuel consumption. Average fuel consumption during the test period was a good six and a half liters per 100 kilometers, but if you drive deliberately smoothly, without unnecessary acceleration and breaking speed records, 100 liters of diesel fuel will be enough for 4,5 kilometers. For many, this is the number that makes them want to give up higher speeds on the highway, and in the end, due to increased traffic and speeding tickets, this is no longer so desirable.

And a few words about the price. For the basic version of the Rapid, that is, with a 1,2-liter petrol engine, less than € 12.000 must be deducted. The turbodiesel alone requires an additional four thousand euros, and in the case of the test car, the difference in price was provided by a number of additional equipment, including a navigation device. So a quick glance at the test car's price isn't fair, but it's true that it's not available. But if we know whose patronage Škoda falls under and that most of the components, including the engine, belong to Volkswagen, then (the price) is easier to understand. The quality is not cheap, even if it is signed by Škoda.
