Test: Škoda Superb 2.0 TDI (140 kW) DSG L&K

As for the predecessor, we complained here and there about the materials, but especially about the design, both outside and inside, and, of course, the lack of the latest technical frills. We had a feeling that Superb Group deliberately impoverished and misled us so as not to get into the cabbage of competing cars of other brands of the concern. There is no such feeling in the new generation. On the contrary, Superb already has a modern design on the outside, this sedan wants to be almost a four-door coupe with its roof and rear. Internally, of course, it differs from the Passat, which is even closer to it in the group, but not with such a difference as before - but the truth is, the difference in price is not so great anymore. But more on that later. The main trump card of the previous generation Superb remains - the interior space.

There is really a lot of space in the back, enough for another adult passenger to comfortably sit in the two-meter front seat. The rear seats are comfortable too, the bottom edge of the glass in the door is low enough to keep kids from complaining, and since the temperature in the back can be adjusted separately, there's little chance a rear passenger will complain. Maybe pushing three in the back, but the one in the middle between the two seats (yes, there are three belts and cushions in the back, but really two comfortable seats and some soft space in between) just wins “be happy.” It is much better if there are two behind, enjoying the spacious luxury and comfort. In the front, with taller riders behind the wheel, we basically wanted the driver's seat to be lowered a little more than the minimum height setting allows. Because the test Superb had a large glass skylight, there might not have been enough headroom. Otherwise, everything is exemplary, from the settings of the seat and steering wheel to the position behind it.

There are also plenty of storage spaces (they also cool when it comes to closed drawers) and the driver is pleased not only with the heated seats but with the fact that they are also ventilated. And it will come in handy in the heat. One of the areas of the new Superb that is the most advanced over its predecessor is the infotainment system. The screen is excellent, the controls are intuitive, the possibilities are really huge. Connecting to a mobile phone works without problems, the same goes for playing music from it, this can also be stored on an SD card - the space for another is for navigation maps saved on it. This one also works great: fast and with good search. Of course, you won't find your destination here with a simple search or typing.

However, you will only find the best in much more expensive cars. The Superb test was also rich in systems designed to help the driver. The Lane Assist system stands out in particular, which not only recognizes the lines on the road, but also determines whether there are more lanes or not. He can also use low metal fences or demarcation curbs when working on the road, and is not bothered by the fact that the old white markings are also present. Its sensitivity can be adjusted and the car stays in the middle of the lane easily and only doesn't react when it's fully close to the line - you only have to hold the steering wheel or after a good ten seconds the driver will be reminded that it's not designed for autonomous driving. Similar praise can be given to its connection to the blind spot sensor. If the driver tries to change lanes towards a car hiding in the blind spot (or this could cause a collision), he not only warns him with a signal in the outside rear-view mirror.

Gently at first, and then more significantly, prevents the steering wheel from turning in the desired direction, if the driver insists, try shaking the steering wheel again. You can also thank the radar cruise control, which is very sensitive so that it is not interfered with by cars on the adjacent highway lane, but it can also sense the speed of the vehicle in the left lane if overtaken on the right. due to too high a speed. At the same time, if the driver wants, it can be determined both during braking and during acceleration, or it can work softer and more economically. Of course, Superb can also stop and start completely automatically. Speaking of economy, the new generation 190-liter TDI can produce 5,2 "horsepower", but consumption on our standard lap still stopped at (depending on the size of the car) a favorable XNUMX liters, and the test passed very quickly. on the highway kilometers only a good liter higher. Commendable.

Aside from the economy, the TDI is also (almost) soundproofed enough, and its connection to the six-speed dual-clutch transmission is clever enough to mask mild breathlessness at the lowest revs. If required, the DSG can operate quickly and smoothly with low gas pressure. It is only if the driving profile selection system is set for eco-driving that it can react too slowly if the driver in the meantime changes his mind and demands a quick reaction. As long as the Superb driver chooses the "Comfort" driving profile, this is a truly comfortable car. Only a few irregularities get in, and the driver in some places even thinks that he has air suspension. Of course, the "penalty" is a little more lean in corners, but at least on the highway, the soft chassis adjustment does not cause unwanted vibrations.

On normal roads, you'll have to be a little quieter or opt for the dynamic mode, which will make the Superba noticeably stronger and more fun around corners, at the expense of comfort, of course. But let's bet that the vast majority of owners will choose the comfort mode, and then stop changing the settings. At the beginning, we mentioned that the advantage of the old Superb was also a low price. The new one, at least when it comes to more equipped versions, can no longer boast of this. Equally equipped and motorized as the Passat, which is noticeably smaller in the back, it's only two thousandths cheaper than it is - and yet the Passat has all-digital gauges that the Superb doesn't have. It looks like some of the other competitors and it's clear that Škoda no longer wants to be the "cheap brand" of VAG. Thus, the final assessment of such a Superb is primarily an answer to the question of how much the badge on its nose costs compared to competitors and how much its spaciousness affects this answer. If you appreciate the amount of equipment and the quality of technology, Superb is a great choice, and in discussions about hotels, a small difference in price with brands that are rooted in the hearts of Slovenes can hurt a little.
