Short test: Seat Leon 1.6 TDI (77 kW) Sport

The problem with Seat is that neither the Volkswagen Group nor the home dealer knows exactly what to do with the Spanish brand. Consequently, they also lack a strategy for Leon, no relevant advertising, and thus, they do not unleash the potential of the clients.

Well, while we are gradually anticipating the arrival of the new Leon (it has been this way since 2005, and two years ago it was only slightly updated in terms of design), the current one still has many trump cards among his wings. Of course, we will not listen to pessimists about the fact that the successor will be postponed or even resign due to the crisis. Because he doesn't deserve it.

The first trump card is literally between the front wings. It was loaned to him by Volkswagen. 1,6-liter and 77-kilowatt TDI, which more or less has already established itself in many cars of the German family. Due to the more modest (diesel) volume, it needs a little more gas at start, which the sensitive driver immediately gets used to, and requires a little more practice when starting off. suffer from ears and gripwho need to donate at least partially in order to successfully climb to the top. This is especially true if the car is full of revelers and their luggage.

I am still amazed at how much space this offers one-dimensional Leon form... Adults will be able to sit in the back, too, if not all girls are soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooowed, and the trunk can hold more than one would expect from a car of this size. Statistics say that it is in the golden middle of the car class, but the rectangular shape of the space and the high opening of the tailgate allow take advantage of every centimeter.

Soundproofing does its job well, although the turbodiesel is audible especially during cold starts. The average was 6,4 liter, which again is not the best, but by no means the worst among comparable cars. We regret to admit that we just had to try a sportier chassis, which is why we often hit full throttle when cornering. This is due to the sporty orientation of the chassis. calmed down a bitbut the road situation is so good that the engine is completely lost; In short, it was too weak and too wild to compete with the oversized chassis.

Excellent power steering and a long neutral chassis were enough to squeeze out 100 good turbo diesel "horses" for sports. But if there were 50 or 100 more, it would be just fun. We also gave a minus to the gearbox. To Avoid Misunderstandings: Gear Transitions quickly and accuratelythat it is a pleasure to operate it, but only five levels... If I had sixth gear or better yet a DSG gearbox, the driving pleasure would be even greater.

If you have a bit of dynamism in you, this 1,6-liter engine will be a little on the small side for you; however, if you are looking for a useful and economical vehicle, it might be time to go to the salon and pick it up at a greater discount. A new one is coming, right?

evaluation

  • A well-equipped Leon with a 1,6-liter TDI engine costs almost 20 thousand. A lot, almost overkill. But for the money you get sportiness (chassis, seats, steering), fuel economy (engine), and the gearbox was among the bragging rights – although a six-speed would have been better. It has everything, but for some reason it does not find its place in the market. Too expensive, under-advertised, or just ignored?
