Test Brief: Renault Clio Grandtour dCi 90 Energy Dynamique

Look at the photo showing the front of the car. Do you believe the bumper is 200 horsepower lower than the Clio? For an extra € 288, you might think of a two-tone front bumper reminiscent of carbon fiber and aluminum protection, but both are actually plastic. For a nicer appearance and better aerodynamics, this is probably good, but not for city curbs and rubble roads. Therefore, we do not want to admit that the front bumper is really too low for the family version, as we accidentally tested its strength after just a few days of testing. It didn't end well.

Then another round was requested by another staff member. He drove out of the service garage, drove a few kilometers and, nay, turned back and preferred to leave him at work overnight, saying that the engine sounds strange and that at least the exhaust manifold probably exploded in an accident, if not something- even worse. When he calls my house to tell me about his observations, I start laughing: no, this is not a faulty engine or a perforated exhaust, but the sound can be attributed to the R-Sound Effect system.

You know? Through the R-Link interface (an optional 18-inch or 6-centimeter touchscreen through which we control navigation, multimedia, phone and car settings), you can imagine the sound of the engine of a racing Clio, Clio V1.5, vintage, motorcycle. , etc. The changed sound is then heard through the speakers only in the cabin, but the novelty is made to work depending on the accelerator pedal. So more gas means more noise, so I find it immediately confusing to the uninitiated. And so that the colleague was really concerned, not without reason, he took care of the muffled sound of the motorcycle. Some laughter in the editorial proves that the system is not wrong, although we may wonder if the Clio dCi family is right for it ...

So if you don't have the money for the Clia RS, consider at least some pretty carbon-fiber-colored accessories, because with the right soundstage, you will again experience what semi-race RS drivers experience every day while driving. If the soundstage seems silly to you, consider supercars. When individual cylinders are turned off due to economy and ecology, passengers can still hear, say, an eight-cylinder, only then through the sound system, and not because of the engine and therefore the exhaust system. If they can, why not Renault ...

A lot of us love van Clio's dynamic shape. Maybe even more than the five-door version. Whether this was due to the side windows tapering towards the rear, the hidden Alfino hooks in the C-pillar, or the large rear spoiler, it doesn't even matter. It's probably a combination of everything, and if it weren't for this plow in the front (okay, let's face it, it would have gotten very high marks for its looks). There is a useful trunk under the tailgate, which also has two options: you can use the entire volume or split the trunk in two. The base 443 liters can be used at full capacity, while the top layout and folded back bench create a flat bottom and basement space for small items.

Some competitors are more generous with space, as the Škoda Fabia Combi has 505 liters of boot space, while the Seat Ibiza van has 13 liters less than the French. Thus, Clio belongs to the golden mean. There is plenty of room in the rear seats, although the taller hips slightly impair visibility, which the kids didn't like. And let's not forget: Isofix mounts are readily available, which we often missed with French brands but praised with German ones.

Even though they have a 1,6-liter dCi in the house, you can get the older 1,5-liter at the Clio. Since we tested the stronger of the two variants on turbodiesels (55/70 and 66/90), in principle, due to the abundant torque, problems with faster movement do not arise, unless of course the car is fully loaded or if the car is not under a slope. reminiscent of Vrsic. While the aforementioned 66 kilowatts can only be tamed with a five-speed gearbox (activation of which can be further limited by sound), there is no problem with excessive noise due to a too short calculated last gear or greater greed.

On the contrary, when driving at a leisurely pace, the consumption will be from 5,6 to 5,8 liters, depending on how many routes you have traveled along the highway. Commendable. The plastic electric steering wheel right under the thumbs, which is not pleasant in the summer heat, gives only scant information about what is happening to the front wheels, but the Clio Grandtour has a stabilizer that is stronger and 10 percent stiffer. chassis than the five-door version. does not sit down at full load. In the end, of course, the conclusion that the Dynamique equipment (the third of the four options) and accessories (R-Link 390 euros, special color 190 euros, spare wheel 50 euros, etc.) did not miss a lot, the only drawback is the the fact that there is no parking probe.

We have to deduct another 1.800 euros from the price of the test car, as this is the usual discount for all customers. Then the price of 16.307 XNUMX euros for the test car is not even that high, and if you do not want more sports accessories, it can be even lower.

evaluation

  • The Clio RS and the Grandtour version, of course, could not have been more different: the first sporty, the second for the family, more elastic for the racetrack, more economical for poor family budgets. The model should remain just a model, as many of us find the Clio with its large trunk to be very attractive.

We praise and reproach

equipment (R-Link)

smart key

easily accessible Isofix mounts

trunk size and ease of use

no parking sensors

front bumper too low (optional!)
