Test: Lancia Ypsilon 0.9 TwinAir Platinum
Content
I was looking forward to finally experiencing the Lancia Ypsilon with its new two-cylinder forced-draft engine.
The fourth generation of this urban wanderer is charming again.
Form it is modernly rounded, with hidden rear hooks and a large C-pillar that clearly hints at the piles, but retains the usability of the five doors. At the same time, the novelty enriches the already prestigious history that Lancia has brought to its name.
If I only remembered the legendary Launch Delte Integral, the most beautiful square car in history, I find it nice. Belli tempi, ma passati could be said in Italian, which, in our opinion, could be briefly translated as "Once upon a time was beautiful." The only weakness of the new Y. installing a front license plate that will plow on the first snow. Well, the fact that curbs aren't quite friendly with such a low setting is something we've experienced on a lot of Peugeots when we came home with a cracked front frame and only one license plate.
The interior of the enchantress
Inside, I confess I was a little disappointed. Lancia Ypsilon has lost all that grace that penetrated under the skin of elegantly dressed young ladies and gentlemen in particular. She became too serious, in fact, too angular as a man to talk to. Nissan Micro in Toyota Yaris competed on how to lose women and acquire male clients.
Obviously women are not that good consumers if they all want to attract men? Hmm, then why does everyone only advertise in women's magazines? Oh, let marketing ...
Of course, the novelty can be commended for the central installation of transparent sensors and rich equipment (Blue & Me system, leather).
City functionswhen the steering servo shows muscle to facilitate maneuvering when parking, we did not use it at all, because even without this accessory, the steering wheel is almost too soft. Maybe we didn't miss this with the parking assist system, which works more than great?
First you press a button to find a large enough parking space, and then you simply control the gas and the gearbox, because the electronics take care of the steering wheel and therefore the correct position in the “box”. I laughed when I saw how quickly the system turns the steering wheel, but then I remembered that this is an Italian car that should go off the road in Rome, Milan or Turin ...
engine
While some of our editorial staff were in awe of the two-cylinder forced-fill engine, I would have preferred Multicard... It is really one and a half thousand more expensive, but it is calmer, quieter and more economical.
Yes, I'm talking about a turbodiesel, the two-cylinder petrol engine is, in my opinion, too gross, too loud and too thirsty. Where are all the benefits a gasoline engine should have, such as smooth running, quiet running, even with CO2 emissions, are they very similar to the Multijet?!?
We drank an average of 7,8 liters. (Fiat 500 with similar engine and 7,2 summer tires) and you can believe me there was a highway in between. In fact, I have to say that the Vrhnik slope is already a big chunk for a two-cylinder, as we ran into it with three passengers and an empty trunk at 130 km / h and then watched helplessly as the engine revs plummeted at speed. despite full throttle.
And when we shifted to fourth gear, the vans also "failed" ... Interestingly, the engine is not always loud. When starting off and more than 3.000 rpm it becomes unpolished, and it is very pleasant when driving in a calm city. Maybe someday I will have to bite my tongue, but I stress again that at the moment I do not see any particular advantages in this engine.
So the new Lancia Ypsilon, which was once just Y, is a disappointment?
Aside from the engine, maybe not, I just missed the charm of its predecessor. Unfortunately, a beautiful body shape is no longer enough.

Overall rating (287/420)
With a different engine (read: turbo diesel) I could even crawl to four, but let's be honest: we're afraid that many women won't like it anymore, and neither will men.
Exterior (13/15)
A vehicle with a dynamic design that just needs attention.
Interior (86/140)
Also, the interior and trunk have grown, a lot of equipment, an unergonomic steering wheel.
Engine, transmission (50
/ 40)A modern but noisy and gluttonous engine, mid-chassis and possibly too soft power steering.
Driving performance (52
/ 95)Over-engaging gear lever, mid-road position, good braking feel.
Performance (16/35)
Compared to competitors, lower acceleration, average flexibility and top speed for competitors.
Security (35/45)
Do not worry, both active and passive safety shines, an acceptable braking distance for winter shoes.
Economy (35/50)
Slightly overestimated consumption for a two-cylinder engine, average warranty.
We praise and reproach
