Test: Mercedes-Benz A 180 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY 7G-DCT

It is clear that even if we want to, we cannot ignore the fact of what happened to the first generation Mercedes A-Class. On a moose test, he passed out and received worldwide criticism. But at Mercedes they acted quickly, didn't defend themselves, didn't make excuses or cheat, just rolled up their sleeves and offered ESP as standard on all models, a stabilization system that ensured that the A no longer over-relied on corners, even if it could be alone. it was easy to turn over.

And Class A became a blockbuster. Some may have bought it precisely because of its stormy birth, while others saw and found other virtues in it. He was loved by both senior and minor drivers as he sat high in it. And of course he was loved by singles, mostly male performers, because he was a ticket to a car club with a star on his nose. And I will immediately add to this: even a lot of the fairer sex bought it as a joke to enter the elite.

When a manufacturer draws a line under the calculation, it must of course be positive. It does not matter for him whether young, old, men or women buy a car, he prefers that everyone likes it. And that was class A.

Now a new generation has come. Very different in design, much more like conventional cars. And much more expensive! But this time, Mercedes is just defending itself by saying the car is reasonably priced because not only is it good (since it's a Mercedes), but it also offers a ton of sporting pleasures. Okay, but then why did the first generation of the A-Class sell satisfactorily when it wasn't sporty? Was it really so unsportsmanlike that they had to make a completely different, as Mercedes claims, a more sporty Class A, and do we really need sports cars in this class of cars and in these times?

Be that as it may, the new class A is now what it is. I'm not saying that in terms of design it's definitely prettier compared to its predecessor (although the shape rating is relative), which could be due to it being less off the average. You know, the difference is a double-edged sword: someone likes it right away, and someone never. The new class A should not have these problems, at least from a design standpoint. This is a Mercedes that pleases from all sides. The front of the car is dynamic and aggressive, the rear is bulky and muscular, and in between is an elegant side, with just enough steam on the wide-opening door for easy access to the rear seat.

So, now the novelty is a compact sedan with a length of 4,3 meters, which is 18 centimeters lower than its predecessor. Only due to this fact, the center of gravity of the car is lower (exactly four centimeters), and as a result, the position of the car is improved, and the car can immediately move more sportively (

The interior is brand new. It is clear when we are talking about the Mercedes A-Class, otherwise it is already known, but it is not bad. The driving position, at least compared to its predecessor, is better, the seats are also good. There's not enough room in the rear, you have to consider the class of car you're driving in class A. Even more unsettling inside is the fact that in the base version the dashboard is rather plastically dull, much nicer and less monotonous (and with a color screen) for a hefty surcharge. In fact, the same conclusion applies to the whole car - you get a really great car for a certain premium, otherwise you have to make compromises.

In the test car, the engine was also one of them. The 1,8-liter turbo diesel engine has 109 "horsepower", which is inaudible and not easy to read, but it should be noted that the test Mercedes A-Class weighed as much as 1.475 kilograms. For a car weighing almost one and a half tons, a good hundred "horses" is almost not enough. Especially if the car is fully loaded with passengers and luggage, for which a 341 liter trunk is otherwise available; however, enlarging it is quite simple and elegant: by folding the rear seat backrests in a ratio of 60:40, you can get up to 1.157 liters of usable volume.

This means that 109 “horses” need a good 0 and a half seconds to accelerate from 100 to 10 km / h, acceleration stops at 190 km / h. The main trump card of this 1,8-liter engine, in addition to acceleration and maximum speed, according to the factory , is the consumption and emission of harmful CO2 substances. The plant promises a consumption of four to five liters per 100 kilometers, during tests it was from five to almost nine liters per 100 kilometers.

Fortunately, test A was equipped with a start / stop system, which is one of the best. Of course, there is a new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that performs significantly better than the previous one, while at the same time allowing sequential shifting with the paddles of the steering wheel, which in itself requires “manual” shifting. Unfortunately, the power was a little too low, at least in the test car.

At the end of the day, I ask myself: did the world really need a new or very sporty Class A in all its variants? After all, versions with basic engines are not even designed for sporty driving, since the engines cannot provide this at all due to insufficient power. And, of course, there are customers who love the new A-Class but don't want to go (too) fast. Even less do they want a solid sports chassis.

Yes, you think about all this when you see the price of this (test) Mercedes.

To be clear: it is clear that it cannot be compared with Korean cars, but what about others, such as German ones? You may know where the taco dog prays, but if not: For the price of a test Mercedes A-Class, you get almost two otherwise basic Golfs in Slovenia. Now think about yours!

I can't remember the last time a car left me so separated, agitated on the one hand, and disappointed on the other. On the one hand, the new little A is a real Mercedes, both in terms of design, materials and workmanship, and in terms of the overall feel of the car. Previous A did not give this feeling, but the last one. The feeling that you know why you paid so much for the car, and what that star on your nose really means.

On the other hand, he disappointed me. The engine is underpowered in terms of the car's weight and especially all that the car promises to look and feel. I would have expected at least a rudimentary sovereignty in performance from a car of such a reputable brand and at such a price. However, this is not the case, and even the new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission cannot help here - also because it constantly shifts to too high gears, which only adds to the feeling of malnutrition. For the good of Mercedes, I hope their test car dealerships have more powerful versions for customers...

Overall rating (339/420)

  • This time, the appearance of the Mercedes A-Class is significantly more dynamic than that of its predecessor. If we add even more efficient chassis and sportiness, the car will become even more popular with young people, which does not mean that it will scare off older drivers. He knows how to be liked by design.

  • Exterior (14/15)

Compared to the previous A, the new one is a real mannequin.

  • Interior (101/140)

Unfortunately, the equipment is rich only for a hefty surcharge, the sensors are beautiful and transparent, and the middle trunk has a surprisingly small opening.

  • Engine, transmission (53

    / 40)

The dual-clutch transmission is faster than the previous automatic transmission, but it's hardly the best in its class. In a trio of engine, chassis and transmission, the first is the worst link.

  • Driving performance (62

    / 95)

There is nothing to complain about the position on the road, because the car is much lower than its predecessor, there are no more problems with stability and braking in corners.

  • Performance (25/35)

If the car has an intake engine, then miracles should not be expected.

  • Security (40/45)

Although the name places it at the beginning of the alphabet, it is placed with the equipment towards the end of the alphabet.

  • Economy (44/50)

Fuel consumption A is directly proportional to the weight of the driver's leg. The loss in value is likely to be greater due to the higher price tag compared to its predecessor.
