Test: Mercedes Benz C 220 BlueTEC

If you were brought to test C blindfolded, put behind the wheel and your eyes were untied, no one would be offended if you thought that you were sitting (at least) in the E-class. Here the Mercedes people have done a great job and the 'baby benz' as we told him before the star appeared on even smaller cars, here it reaches very high levels. The combination of brown tones in the Exclusive interior design package makes the interior airy, but even without this optical effect, there is no need to complain about spaciousness. The driver's seat will be placed in the rearmost position only by people of two meters in height, but if a passenger of slightly more than average height sits in front, then a passenger of the same height will easily sit behind him. Of course, they will not be able to stretch their legs, but they cannot do this at the same time in S class.

The Exclusive interior also includes comfortable sports seats that are manually adjustable longitudinally, while the backrest and seat height are electrically adjustable. It is a shame that the seat angle cannot be adjusted, as this would make it easier for medium-sized drivers to find a comfortable position. But most importantly, in terms of height, although the test C had an additional (for a rich 2.400 euros) and practically unnecessary panoramic two-section sliding sunroof, eating up a few centimeters of height from the roof, there was not enough space. even for senior members of the editorial board.

Speaking of the driver's workspace: the sensors are great and the color LCD in between offers a lot of information and is clearly visible even in the sun. The Comand online system not only means that you can browse the web via a mobile phone (connected via Bluetooth) on a large, high-resolution screen at the top of the center console, but it also has a built-in WLAN hotspot (so that other devices can connect to the Internet). have passengers) that navigation is fast and accurate, and the maps offer a 3D view of cities and buildings (with free updates for the first three years), XNUMXGB of music memory, and more. ...

Definitely a very welcome addition. We attributed a small minus only because of the control: the fact that with a spinning wheel you can do almost everything that we are already used to in Mercedes, of course, is not a minus, and it also has a touchpad that can control the same functions much faster, and select or enter waypoints for navigation. The only problem is that this input field is also the surface that the driver places their hand on when using the rotary knob, and sometimes unwanted entries or actions occur, although the system usually determines that the user is a hand or palm. for support.

Trunk? It's not small, but of course its opening is limited to a limousine. There is, of course, enough space for family use, just do not count on the transportation of large loads. The back bench (at extra cost) folds out at a 40: 20: 40 ratio, which means you can also carry longer items in this C.

If you look at the technical data at the end of the article, and more specifically at the pricing data, you will find that most of it - almost 62k, the same as Test C costs - is optional equipment. Some of them are even more welcome, such as the Exclusive interior and the AMG Line exterior, which is class C, such as the parking assistance package that ensures easy parking in cities, smart LED lights (almost two thousand), the already mentioned projection screen (1.300 euros), navigation and multimedia system Comand online and much more… But this in turn means that there is practically no equipment that you still need – with the exception of the Airmatic air chassis. .

Yes, Mercedes brought air suspension technology to this class, and we admit we missed it in Test C. Partly because we were able to test it well (under what circumstances you'll find out in the next issue of Avto magazine), and partly because the test The C had not only the AMG Line exterior, but also a sporty chassis and 19-inch AMG wheels. The result is a rigid, overly rigid chassis. It won't bother you on beautiful highways, but on Slovenian ruins it will take care of the constant shaking of the interior. The solution is simple: instead of a panoramic roof, think of Airmatic and you save a thousand. If you are left with 18-inch wheels that come with the AMG Line exterior package at the same time, and therefore with slightly less low-profile tires, the driving comfort is ideal.

The movement technique is excellent. The BlueTEC-badged 2,1-litre turbodiesel is capable of a healthy 125 kilowatts or 170 horsepower, which of course you won't be able to race, but a motorized C like this is also great on highways where there's no speed limit. This results in a pleasant non-diesel sound (sometimes it can even be slightly sporty), sophistication and also low consumption. The test stopped at 6,3 liters (which is a really good number) and on a normal lap it was a bit underpowered and the C would take less than five liters of fuel. Given that an automatic transmission is installed between the engine and the wheels, this result is all the more favorable. Otherwise, the seven-speed automatic, labeled 7G Tronic plus, is quick, quiet and almost imperceptible - the latter is actually the biggest compliment an automatic transmission can earn.

Steering (which is surprisingly accurate and eloquent for a Mercedes, and just right), transmission and engine can be controlled using the agility switch. You can choose Economy, Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus mode or Personal, in which you choose your own settings. If you were paying extra for the Airmatic chassis, this button would control its settings. And in "Comfort" mode it would be such a letter "C", like a flying carpet, in sharp contrast to its appearance.

This one is very sporty, mainly due to the AMG Line package. The rear is a little more relaxed than the bow of the car, but overall the car looks compact and fit. The already mentioned LED headlights do the job as they brighten the road, but there are smaller shadow spots at the edge of their range and a slightly purple and then yellow edge of the headlight beam, which can be confusing at times. But still: given that you can no longer think of xenon technology in the C-Class (which is obviously saying goodbye faster and faster now), just reach for the LED headlights.

So how high does such a C rise? Highly. This time around, Mercedes has released a smaller sports sedan that will be as good for family use as it is for sportier drivers.

In terms of materials, equipment, as well as overall feel of the car, they reached the highest point in their class. Thus, one can dare to hint that in confrontation with its main competitor, the BMW 3 Series and the already outdated Audi A4, there is a lot, if not too much work to be done. You will very soon be able to find out if this feeling is true.

Overall rating (53/420)

  • It looks like Mercedes with the new C. Whether it is completely up to par will be shown by the comparative test we have prepared.

  • Exterior (15/15)

The sporty nose and side lines, slightly reminiscent of a coupé, give it a distinctive look.

  • Interior (110/140)

Not only the dimensions of the cabin, but also the feeling of spaciousness will delight the driver and passengers.

  • Engine, transmission (49

    / 40)

Too rigid chassis is the only thing that seriously spoils the impression. The solution is, of course, Airmatic.

  • Driving performance (64

    / 95)

For a Mercedes surprisingly lively in corners, the steering wheel is also a big step forward with the feel it gives.

  • Performance (29/35)

Powerful enough, but economical to use. AdBlue (urea) for cleaning exhaust gases is paid additionally.

  • Security (41/45)

This C did not have all the electronic security systems that exist at the moment, but there was no shortage of it.

  • Economy (53/50)

Low consumption is a plus, the base price is tolerable, but the figure below the line can more than double with climbing additional equipment.

The AdBlue fluid required for the BlueTEC system to work is still quite rare in our country in quantities for passenger cars.
