Test: Mercedes Benz V 220 CDI

Sashko is really a young, but experienced member of the team of the Auto magazine, so I have to believe him. Apparently, Mercedes-Benz technicians and engineers were given the magic wand to bring the chassis and feel of driving the V-Class so close to classic cars that only the boxy body shape resembles a large, often uncomfortable and awkward passenger. minibuses.

The history of the V-class has a long beard, as he inherited some of the genes from the Vita or Vian's passenger. But van options are always a compromise, especially with a chassis. Since they think first of all of the load or unwanted landing of the chassis, they are relieved, uncomfortable and often anxious on a bumpy road. In the V-class, we did not notice these problems, since in combination with a 2.143 cubic meter turbodiesel with up to 120 kilowatts and a seven-speed automatic transmission, it worked very ... hmm, one might say light ... smooth; smooth. Even Mercedes-Benz's clever designers couldn't completely hide the large size of the body, so finding a parking spot in the city center is more of a painstaking job than a friendly task.

And parking spaces are suddenly so small ... Size is also known around corners, as even the increasingly sought-after crossovers cannot compete with (combi) limousines, but rear-wheel drive is also on a snowy road thanks to Meek's efficient ESP. The four-wheel drive will have to wait a little longer as it will be offered later. The engine also makes more noise due to the good soundproofing of the passenger compartment, and the automatic transmission marked 7G-Tronic Plus (surcharge of 2.562 euros) allows several programs: S, C, M and E. Comfort mode, manual gearshift with steering ears and an economical way, in which, on a normal circle, we used up only 6,6 liters per hundred kilometers with a quiet ride at high speed.

The engine is not a decomposer, but it is quite enough for normal tracking of loaded traffic flows, thanks to 380 Nm of maximum torque, even a full trunk and a large slope are not afraid of it. Speaking of the trunk, there's always plenty of room, and accessing it requires some power due to the heavier rear doors. Under the open door, all those whose genes did not exceed 190 centimeters can move smoothly, and unlike the best-stocked version of Avantgarde, the test V had no glass that could be opened separately. Our eight-seat V 220 CDI, although you may note fewer seats in the showroom, you can also think of four seats with a center table, with separate air conditioning at the rear (additional charge of 881 euros!) and access through two sides of the sliding doors (in stock left) - 876 euros).

It is best for third-row passengers to enter through the right side door, since the right-most seats are individual and provide unhindered access to other seats. This is a slight disappointment, as they could have been more luxurious - at least the first two in terms of seat length. It is also not clear that individual rear seats without ISOFIX anchorages were placed in the far right position. Wouldn't it be better to put the child in the second row, of course, near the door, so that there would be the least problems with installing a child seat, and the child most of all in the eyes of the driver?!? The instrument panel is arranged like a Mercedes, although we ran into a bug in the proverbial German precision: access to the fuel tank is from the driver's side, and the arrow on the instrument panel directs the driver to the right side of the car.

Even though the test car had an extra center box with roller shutters (the € 116 is worth spending, otherwise you'll miss out on the handy storage space for small items), it still allowed for a smooth transition to the rear of the cab. The driver will also get a camera to assist when reversing, and above all we praise the package of LED intelligent lighting systems that literally turns night into day. A very effective event worth € 1.891 each! At a price of 40.990 13.770 euros, the V-Class is not one of the cheapest cars, especially with accessories, which cost as much as XNUMX euros in the test car! But prestige, whether it's spaciousness, equipment, or smoothness, simply comes at a price. You do not believe? Don't be distrustful, Tomaj, I say from experience that it doesn't pay off.

Overall rating (325/420)

  • You can gather different opinions about the shape of the exterior, but we will not discuss the technique and usability of this car. If your goal is to have a big, comfortable and reliable car to carry more people, then the V-Class has virtually no competition.

  • Exterior (12/15)

    Unmistakably Mercedes, so immediately recognizable.

  • Interior (109/140)

Plenty of space, satisfactory equipment, adequate comfort and a huge trunk.

  • Engine, transmission (55

    / 40)

Neither the engine nor the comfortable chassis disappointed. We highly recommend the automatic transmission (optional)!

  • Driving performance (54

    / 95)

Directional stability is expected to be impaired and care should be taken when cornering. Feeling good when fully braked.

  • Performance (23/35)

In this section, the V 220 CDI is perfectly fine for the task, since you probably won't be racing with it.

  • Security (31/45)

We praised the LED headlights and missed out on many of the active safety equipment.

  • Economy (41/50)

There is no cheap tier, this can also be the best guarantee.
