Test: Opel Astra 2.0 CDTI (118 kW) AT Cosmo (5 doors)

Don't be offended if you don't understand the history of the automotive industry. As you may have noticed, we also enjoy browsing the free online encyclopedia to brush up on our knowledge. The production of the Kadetta dates back to 1936, when it was still the Kadetta 1.

After 1962, the Kadett was assigned a letter next to the name, and have since been listed as models A, B, C, D and E. Then, in the year of Slovenian independence, the Kadett was given a different name (the name Astra originated from the UK). adjacent to the track, continued Opel's mission in the compact class.

The Astra F, G and H were a good basis for the new model we saw – ha, last year. Even after this long familiarity with history, do you think the boastful six-six Volkswagen Golf is the real young man in this group?

At Opel, they had to be quite attentive to Generation I, despite their rich tradition, as they were already beginning to experience financial difficulties. Perhaps, however, the red numbers on GM's bill were to blame for the fact that the latest Astra is not just a new piece of paper in a thick book, but a whole new chapter. It would be difficult to compare it to its predecessor because it is so much better.

Let's start with exterior. The Astra I is 170 millimeters longer than the previous generation and the wheelbase is 71 millimeters longer. If you compare it with the worst competitors, you can immediately see that the new Astra is the longest, but also the tallest. Only the Ford Focus is wider.

But not only the length is to blame, but also the shape of the body and the wide chassis. Due to the falling shape of the beautifully designed body movements, you will have to bend over if you want to take a seat in the second row of seats without banging your head.

Po trunk Despite its length, the Astra is only in middle gray, as the Megane and the outgoing Focus offer an average of 30 liters more, while the Golf class benchmark is 20 liters less.

Well, on the trunk, you immediately need to praise the system FlexFloorwhere an adjustable (carrier!) shelf can be used to change the volume of the upper and lower boot floors, and if desired, this shelf can be easily placed at the bottom of the beautifully sheathed and third expandable realm. luggage. Simple and useful.

Where are we staying? Yeah, shape. ... Don't think that the simple body shape and eye-catching headlights make the Astra so sporty at first glance.

With a meter in hand, you will notice that the new Astra is being compared to the generation H. more plentiful tracks (56 millimeters at the front and a whopping 70 millimeters at the rear), but at the same time, they were surprised to find that, unlike its competitors, it has a wider rear track, and not the front one, as is usually the case with front-wheel drive cars.

This is why the new Astra looks sporty from the rear, as if at first glance to say that it will rise to the very top of its class, where cake represents a third of the market on a European scale.

View v inside this may confuse you a little. Such Asters will be sold only in our country, since our (German) was well equipped with equipment. Basically a bit too much, which is also the reason for the dizzyingly high price of the test model.

This is why we were able to try out all the technical and electronic options that Opel's strategy was designed to attract demanding customers: for example, pamper your back with first-class sports sports seats that increase the seat size by 280 millimeters, lumbar adjustment, seat tilt flexibility and active cushions.

Covered in leather, they are so-called ergonomic. sports seats top-notch, the only drawback I would attribute to the height as the Golf allows for a lower position. For my 180 centimeters, the height in the Astra was ideal, but with the taller one there will be a little more problems, since you will already be looking under the top edge of the windshield.

On cold winter days we were pleased with the extra by heating the steering wheelwhich, together with three-stage seat heating, quickly warms up the frozen driver. You know, turbo diesels heat up more slowly than their gasoline counterparts, although all the best brands boast quick heating.

We say nothing, warming the buttocks and hands is great, but pests will immediately viciously notice that in the near future we will have to warm our legs and blow warm air around our ears, as we are used to in modern convertibles. .

Well, in the Auto store we prefer to start with the cause rather than the effect, so we would advise you to additionally warm your windshield so that you don't have to skate on ice at all. If we can safely say that the circular gauges are transparent and pretty, we'll be a little less forgiving until a center console with buttons appears.

Lots of equipment, including navigation, speakerphone, radio with CD player, two-channel automatic air conditioning, etc. they offer many options, so there are also (too) many buttons within the reach of the driver's right hand.

However, a lot doesn't always mean opacity, so don't panic and wave the instructions for use right away. Most of these systems can be controlled with buttons on the steering wheel, cruise control on the left steering wheel, and radio and telephone on the right, so the view will not often fall on the crowded center console while driving.

As a last resort, the most useful back button will be welcome when you take a step back or return to the starting point.

Great driving experience thanks to its superb driving position (dare I say the Astra with the sports seats is a sure superior to all the competition despite the slightly limited depth), dynamic dashboard design and quality materials only spoil the work with the side windows, where designers are a little coerced. additional vents for defrosting side windows.

As if the top vents at the extreme corners of the dashboard wouldn't do their job (which they can't because of the different shapes around the door-to-dash contact), then engineers and designers would later attach additional injectors.

Nozzles if we did our job well, we would calmly ignore it, but the overall ventilation (or heating) in the Astra can only be described as average. It takes a while to defrost the windows and warm your feet, so the joking idea of heated feet isn't all that wrong.

It looks like warehouses... While Opel brags about how many small items of different sizes and shapes can be stored in many drawers, the really usable spaces are only average. Including the drinking hole, which is only one size, is still a long way from cooling the air conditioner.

We also awarded a minus to the hard-to-reach on-board computeras part of the left steering wheel needs to rotate for data, but we would recommend starting the rear wiper. For others, the steering wheel needs to be lowered if you want to see something behind the car on rainy days, while for the Astra, you simply press your finger on the top of the right steering wheel and the wiper starts dancing without dropping. steering wheel.

In terms of basic technique, Oplovci did not disappoint, they would be modest, they even impressed! Let's start with the biggest surprise, the six-speed automatic transmission. The gears are not connected by two clutches, which immediately went on the nose of some in the editorial office.

We Openly Admit We Play Golf DSG really good thing, but the question is, do we really need it? No. After 14 days with the Astra automatic transmission, which also allows sequential gear changes, we are even more convinced.

Transmission it works softly and fast enough, whether you are among the faster drivers with a red scarf around their neck or among the slower drivers with a hat on their heads. Even the driver's hesitation, when you fully press the accelerator pedal and then immediately release it, does not confuse the machine, which shakes live content inside the car.

The system also works on the gearbox. Flex Ride, which changes the character of the new Astra. The FlexRide is essentially an electronically adjustable shock that is stiffer in the Sport program and more comfortable in the Tour program.

Along with the chassis, electronic accelerator pedal control (responsiveness), dashboard color (white for Tour and bright red for Sport), electric power steering (responsiveness), and the already mentioned transmission performance. set by pressing a button on the center console.

In a programme Tour will shift earlier and in Sport mode will be more aggressive with each gear. In principle, we expected more from the FlexRide system, especially in the Sport program, but a moderate change in the character of the car is not at all that bad.

The question, however, is similar to that of a dual-clutch transmission: is it necessary at all? Frankly, I would answer in the negative, as the range between comfort and sport modes is too small, and furthermore, the base chassis (individual suspension at the front and cheaper axle shaft with Watt link at the rear) is ideal for dynamic drivers.

OPC version will probably be more radical. The only negative to the gearbox was attributed only to the racers, since the gearshift scheme in sequential mode is the opposite of the racing one. Ah, where are those good old days when Opel was successful in the rally and DTM?

I probably would not even have remembered them if I had not picked up their book, in which an overview of the history from 1936 to 2009 in the compact class on most models is proudly displayed with racing cars. Remember Sepp Haider, Walter Röhrl and other fast gentlemen like him?

Interestingly, the Astra feels good in the city, outside the city and on the highway. City visibility will be provided by daytime running lights in LED technology, system for transparency at night AFL +.

The AFL system with adaptive bi-xenon headlights, developed and manufactured at the Hella Saturnus plant in Ljubljana, offers up to nine functions (changing the intensity and range of light depending on traffic and traffic conditions) and helps with excellent lighting, and the crowded city transmission perfectly captured the most powerful turbodiesel.

The only downside is noisecaused by a motorcycle on a cold morning, but only your neighbors will hear it, not your passengers. On the main road, we found too many decibels from under the fenders as pebbles flew out from under the winter tires, but it was also the only disturbing noise that only the most sensitive could hear.

However, the Astra is very quiet on a flat track, as well as at 130 km / h and 180 km / h thanks to its good sound insulation. Opel's new product is definitely one of the best in its class, and now we want to test the 1-liter petrol engine (6 kW / 85 hp) and even more the 115-liter CDTI (1 kW / 7 hp). -sale version. Of course, for much less money.

Whether we consider Opel cakes or candles as competitors, the new Astra will undoubtedly leave its mark. Maybe now it became a little clearer to me why GM changed its mind about the sale of European works. After the Corsa and Insignia, they'll have a lot of desires that they have usefully driven in recent years.

Face to face. ...

Vinko Kernc: It is quite another matter if the car is "loaded" with equipment from all possible sites. So this Astra may seem completely different (obviously: better) from the Astra that will define the history of the car, but at least to some extent the conclusions we made at the christening at the beginning of October last year are applicable: if it's not the best yet option. in class, but very close. In fact, I can only blame her for not being very good at handling the "secondary" devices. And you quickly get used to it.

Saša Kapetanovič: Already the five-door version assumes a rather sporty and compact design. I suspect the OPC will lick your fingers. On the inside, you can feel the influence of the Insignia, which is good, especially in terms of workmanship and materials. The test version was well equipped and I doubt many of them will be seen on the roads. However, a more stingy version may spread across Slovenia faster than rumors about Damjan Murka. Amen, we would say at Opel for such a New Year's wish.

Overall rating (344/420)

  • The most powerful turbo diesel and automatic six-speed transmission is a winning combination for the more demanding, and the FlexRide system only complements the i, although it is not really needed. Six months later, a universal version will appear, which will establish a (more modest) space frontier, and the fast ones must wait for the OPC.

  • Exterior (12/15)

Somewhere between the Corsa and the Insignia, which we definitely think is a good thing. Consistently, if not beautifully.

  • Interior (97/140)

The interior is neither the largest nor the most ergonomic. If we talk about driving position, then with sports seats it is at least one of the best, if not even victorious!

  • Engine, transmission (58

    / 40)

A nimble, but streamlined engine and a very good (classic) automatic transmission. Also among the best in terms of handling.

  • Driving performance (62

    / 95)

FlexRide contributes to an even better position on the road, medium braking distances.

  • Performance (27/35)

Honestly, you won't need it anymore. In fact, it already looks pretty sporty.

  • Security (49/45)

Active headlights, standard ESP, four airbags and two curtain airbags ... In short: 5 stars for Euro NCAP!

  • Economy

Competitive price, (below) average warranty, moderate loss of value in use.
