Text: Opel Corsa 1.4 Turbo Color Edition

The influence of the two models parked next to it in the showrooms is immediately visible: after the Astra, the Corsa received a slightly more serious face and mature image, and after the Adam, a cheerful color palette, as the name also indicates. test car equipment (Color Edition). Because she's not the most daring in design, she's also lost out on being the most adorable, so being the cutest, kjut, or "fantasy" title would be a pilgrimage to - him, Adam! I don't know if it's worse to lose the ribbon or to recognize the superiority of the male.

You will immediately notice the new Corso as it has much sharper features than its predecessor and above all, you cannot miss the bright red that the test car was wearing. The hood of the car, along with the headlights, has many sharp edges, and the rear boasts the Turbo lettering. It's a shame it doesn't offer even more technical desserts that you can come up with in Astra, and the ability to adapt for each person as Adam suggests. But honestly, the new Corsa doesn't really stand out, but it's (at least a test) a good compromise between agility and usability. We need to fix this: the new Corsa offers many technical and electronic systems, but, unfortunately, not a test one. While it was more with hardware, more precisely the third of four options, since you can choose between Selection, Enjoy, Color Edition and Cosmo accessories, most of the chocolates are included in the accessory list.

There you also get automatic switching between daytime running lights and night lights, rain-sensing wipers, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, forward collision warning, automatic high beams, heated windshield, semi-automatic parking, detection blind spots, sports suspension, FlexFix or integrated two-wheel mounting system, reversing camera and even Recaro seats! In the test, we had to be content with 16-inch aluminum wheels, cruise control, on-board computer, and manual air conditioning as one of the accessories, not to mention the absence of parking sensors! Money is the ruler of the world, so we advise you to carefully read the list of basic equipment before buying, and then check the essentials from the list of accessories.

However, the fact that we were not taken by water because of thirst in the Opel is evidenced by the technician. The new Corsa is without a doubt a step forward, be it the chassis, steering gear or engine. The chassis has been carefully crafted with a center of gravity five millimeters lower, the front suspension has a new hub and a different calculated geometry, and re-tuned springs and dampers. The rear axle has undergone some changes as well, as the car doesn't lean as much as its predecessor, and the bad thing about these changes is a little more nervousness on short bumps. The electronically controlled power steering has also undergone a number of changes, such as a new attachment point for the steering wheel contact to the strut, as well as the City function, which makes it easier to turn the ring in the city center or in crowded parking spaces. ...

Part of the credit goes to brand new wiring that allows the fifth generation to provide wider, more accurate connections between different systems. Thanks to the new front (drive) wheel geometry and power steering adjustment, the driving feel is generally good, perhaps for a more dynamic driver with a bit too artificial feel, but most will be more than satisfied. It's the same with the engine: the turbocharged 1,4-liter is almost at the top of the range, aside from the often complimentary three-cylinder (90 or 115 horsepower), which, unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to test. for now. The engine loves to deliver a maximum torque of 200 Nm at low 1.850 rpm, which does not swell even when the throttle gets stuck, although this is not necessary. Together with a six-speed manual transmission that comes as standard, similar to the one-liter three-cylinder, they are perfect and provide dynamism as well as smoothness during moderate driving.

Fuel consumption in the test ranged from seven to eight liters, but with very moderate driving according to the rules of the road and the ECO program turned on, it dropped to 5,2 liters. Comparative data shows that (at least some) comparable competitors are more agile and less greedy in fast daily traffic flows, not least you can take a look at the Škoda Fabia 1.2 TSI benchmark in the previous release. We will also criticize the choice of winter tires, since the Minerva Ice-Plus S110 is loud (at first we attributed the high-frequency whistle of the transmission, but then it turned out that the tires were to blame for this noise) and certainly not. Powerful enough to cut equally, with an improved chassis and improved steering. In short: with bad tires (look at our brake measurements!) Opel engineers and technicians tried in vain ...

Opel insists on IntelliLink, which does a fairly good job of communicating between your smartphone and the car's infotainment system (suitable for both Android and Apple iOS systems), but it will be difficult to meet all requirements in the future. ... The 70-inch touchscreen (optional!) Is neither intuitive nor overly flexible, but transparent and works well. Besides the hands-free capability, it also allows the use of BringGO systems (you can download a map from, for example, online stores), Stitcher (a global service for live Internet radio or deferred radio content) and Tuneln (access to the global radio network from XNUMX stations).

We liked the dashboard better, which displays information about the on-board computer and other warnings in Slovenian between transparent gauges, while the on-board computer was a little less fortunate, as you have to turn a switch or press a button on the left. steering wheel. The seats are average, there were no comments on the design, the passive safety systems are suitable for this class of cars, but we tried to install suitable ISOFIX mounts. Bravo! If you shudder at the top three in the overall ranking, the Opel Corsa, with a new liter engine, more generous equipment and better tires, would probably climb to four.

Overall rating (294/420)

  • In terms of mechanics, while we did not test the latest liter engine, there were no major issues, but we missed out on a bit more equipment. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to what you get in the basic packages.

  • Exterior (13/15)

A mixture of sharp strokes (light, mask) and an angular body.

  • Interior (82/140)

The size of the trunk, unfortunately, does not keep up with the spaciousness of the passenger compartment, it loses some points in ergonomics (control of the on-board computer), some due to poorer equipment.

  • Engine, transmission (49

    / 40)

The engine is sharp enough and the drivetrain is precise that you'll end up falling in love with them, despite the little comments, the chassis is stiffer than its predecessor, and the steering system is almost too artificial.

  • Driving performance (54

    / 95)

The driving position is predictable, although the Minerva winter tires are by far the weakest point of the car.

  • Performance (23/35)

Otherwise, the performance is quite satisfactory, although some comparable competitors (see Škoda Fabia 1.2 TSI in the previous release) are better.

  • Security (33/45)

In theory, you can get a lot of safety equipment (active safety) with the new Corsa, but this was not on the test car. You will have to pay extra for better packaging or look for accessories.

  • Economy (40/50)

Fuel consumption can be courteously low (normal lap) or, if chasing traffic, higher than the competition, the warranty is average, and we praise the good price of the base model.

We praise and reproach
