Test: Opel Mokka 1.7 CDTi 4 × 2 Enjoy

As if it is no longer with bread. You know, white, semi-white, black, whole grains with these and other seeds ... The first is considered the most desirable, the second is the cheapest, and the rest are useful, but not very cheap. Mokka is not the most expensive representative in its class, but not the cheapest either.

Opel has achieved exceptional results with the Mokka even before the car went on sale or hit dealerships. Obviously, people are hungry for such vehicles (read: light SUVs or small SUVs) or are tired of classic or conventional ones. The Mokka is nothing new to the global automotive world, but it is definitely a novelty in Opel's current offering. He is significantly smaller than Antara, but the statement that much is not necessarily the best, in her case, turned out to be more than true.

It will be interesting to see what (and how much less) Chevrolet has to offer in Trax form. You know, Chevrolet is an ex-Daewoo, at least in Europe. We used to condemn Koreans, now we appreciate them more and more. And it's only a matter of time before people fall into taboos or prejudice against these and other "worst" cars. In the end, you pay less and maybe, but not always, you get a little less. The problem arises if you pay a lot and get less! And in this case it is obvious that Mokka has much more to offer than Trax. Let's see.

If I return to Mokka ... There is nothing to complain about in terms of design, but it does not cause excessive enthusiasm either. It seems that it is formally and holistically placed in the period in which we now live; we do not want unnecessary luxury, to stand out, but at the same time we appreciate all the good. And people appreciate the Opel brand. This is evidenced by the sales data for the Insignia, Astra and eventually the Mokka, when it wasn't even brought to showrooms. Definitely a phenomenon, and even more phenomenal are customers who buy something before they even see it, let alone try it.

But it is obvious that the brand is firmly entrenched in the hearts of consumers to trust it unconditionally. And let's face it, there's nothing wrong with that. As well as with the Opel Mokka, everything is in order. After all, I think that many people will also like the design, and some will not notice at all on the road.

It's the same with the interior. The classic Opel, already well-known, perhaps even too "stingy" for some, too immune to the German language. The familiar gauges, the multi-button center console and the predominantly black color in the test car. Okay, some people like it, others don't like it. Moreover, we know that two-, three- and even multi-colored combinations have long entered the interior of cars. But this is the smallest problem, tastes are different, some just like black.

And don't panic - Mocha or its interior can also be dressed in different colors, and then even those who do not like black will come to mind. The position of the driver behind the wheel is good, there is no need to complain about ergonomics either. The steering wheel lies comfortably in the hand, the switches on it are working, you just need to get used to them. Since the Mokka is just over 4,2 meters long, no miracles can be expected in terms of interior space. He will sit well in the back if the one in front also wants to. The trunk is also not the largest, but you know, a little less than 4,3 meters ...

The test Mokka had a 1,7-liter turbo diesel engine under the hood, offering a rounded 130 "horsepower" and 300 Nm. I am not saying that horses are not shiny, but they like the calm pace the most. However, we openly criticize engine performance, which is hectic and (too) loud, at least compared to some of the competition. Not much better even when heated to operating temperature. Perhaps, the lack of sound insulation of the cabin is to blame for everything, but if we mention the shaking of the inner rear-view mirror while driving, then, probably, the engine with its vibrations is to blame for everything "bad".

On the other hand, the engine shows itself rationally. As written, it does not offer excess power, but it does not require much for its work either. To move almost 1.400 kg of weight, during testing, an average of six to seven liters of diesel fuel per hundred kilometers was required. It proved itself even more in a quiet (combined) ride (normal consumption), where the engine required only 4,9 l / 100 km, which is certainly worthy of praise.

The Start / Stop system also puts its pan next to the last problem, but sometimes it inadvertently pretends because it works very quickly, even too fast, especially when we want to go slowly and (too) softly with the car; then the engine may simply stall. However, if there is too much throttle, the wheels will want to go to neutral, as the test Mokka only had front-wheel drive. Because of this, it can also disappoint someone, especially off-road (remember, we are still talking about a small SUV), as well as on a wet or snowy road. Front-wheel drive is not enough here, and with the already mentioned weight and especially the higher center of gravity, driving requires much more attention. Otherwise, everything will be fine in spring, when the snow forgives and the sun shines. Then only the all-wheel drive Mokka will be able to shine in all its glory.

Of course, there is a solution that sounds like € 2.000. This is a surcharge for four-wheel drive, and then all the above problems disappear. And if you are worried about significantly higher fuel consumption: Opel says all-wheel drive requires an additional 0,4 liters. Despite all the advantages that such a drive provides, this is really a small increase. However, it is imperative to ask what we will be using the machine for. If only taller seats and more safety are important and you don't need to drive in any weather, you can afford a great holiday for 2.000 euros. Even with Mokka only with four-wheel drive.

Overall rating (329/420)

  • With the Mokka, Opel has offered fans of its cars something completely new and relatively good. But every start is difficult, and Mokka is not without flaws, or at least some flaws. And forget about it if you think the Mokka will be a family car - but two people can easily enjoy it. Of course, with two suitcases of luggage.

  • Exterior (11/15)

The likes of Opel are enough to impress many buyers even before they see it live.

  • Interior (88/140)

It is clear that taking into account the length of the car, neither in the cabin nor in the trunk of a miracle can be expected.

  • Engine, transmission (53

    / 40)

The engine is powerful enough, but (too) loud, and not only on a cold start. But maybe the lack of soundproofing is to blame?

  • Driving performance (58

    / 95)

In plentiful snow conditions, other road users look at such a car with respect, but only front-wheel drive does not live up to the car's reputation.

  • Performance (28/35)

In principle, 130 "horsepower" is enough for such a machine. But since the engine is "real" only in the optimal rev range, we cannot exactly praise it. Doesn't react, especially at low revs.

  • Security (38/45)

We live in a time when cars easily reach five stars on EuroNCAP. If the driver sits a little higher, he feels safer.

  • Economy (53/50)

At least with fuel consumption Mokka or. The 1,7-liter turbo diesel doesn't disappoint. We know how old Opels are sold. These are not Volkswagens.
