Test: Peugeot 301 1.6 HDi (68 kW) Allure

In all honesty, we doubt that even at Peugeot we will be able to find someone who would not admit to you that they succeeded in naming the models. They have now explained that enka will ultimately represent specific models for the global market. Okay, let's say this time we "buy" this explanation. However, we are already looking forward to a decision when the 301 receives a successor.

What do Ryanair, Hofer, Lidl, H&M and Dacia have in common? They all prove that you can fly decently, eat, dress and drive a car for relatively little money. Low-cost carriers have shaken up global markets and saved many brands from the "glutton". Some of them are now fighting over their heads, as they had a great opportunity to use such tactics themselves. But apparently it's not too late; at least that's what Peugeot thinks. Dacia is a success story that has prevented other manufacturers from making cars that have everything a man needs (or a little more) for a decent price. Logically, Peugeot carefully avoids these designations in promotional materials, but a slightly more detailed look at the car, price list and advertising campaign allows us to find out where the dog prays tacos.

The Peugeot 301 was created on the extended platform of the 208, but is more similar in size to the Tristoosmica. The design is adapted to poor road surfaces as the emphasis is on soft cushioning, durable construction and added chassis protection. The appearance of a classic sedan, but far from invisible. In fact, he was hard to miss on the large posters of Peugeot's recent advertising campaign. Proof of this is also the significant number of people who were interested in this machine while we were testing it. We can say that we sent at least three potential customers to Peugeot showrooms for a test drive.

The length of the car, which is almost four and a half meters, gives us enough space inside. Above the head, it is a little lacking, since 990 millimeters from the seat to the ceiling is not enough for tall people. We will only get a split rear bench from the second level of equipment, so in addition to the split access equipment, we will also be deprived of the air conditioning, radio with CD player and electrically adjustable outside mirrors. All in all, it's definitely worth the $ 900 you have to pay extra for active equipment that already has it all in it.

A glance at the dashboard shows us clearly that their manual was easy to use. The materials are rough and tough, and the plastic is tough to the touch. Some joints are also rather coarsely dosed. The driving position is more colorful on the skin for those who don't have to move the seat too far as the steering wheel is not depth-adjustable and is quite close to the dashboard. The window opener switches are located on the center ledge and do not open and close automatically.

Storage spaces are sparse and a fairly large drawer can only be found at the front door. But putting keys and a phone in there is inappropriate, because because of the hard plastic, we can hear all these things moving up and down as we move. The can holder is located above the lever from the gearbox and does its job well, while we put the cans there. However, if we put a half-litre bottle in there, we will hit it with our hand every time we shift to the "top" gear. Counters are simple and transparent. Only slightly inaccurate in terms of fuel quantity, as it is based on an eight-level digital scale. Since such a machine will definitely be controlled by someone who closely monitors the consumption, such a counter only complicates its work.

We believe that it is equipped with an on-board computer as standard. Unfortunately, this can only be controlled in one direction with selectors, and the daily odometer does not have decimal numbers. The list of complaints also includes wipers who perform their mission poorly - loudly and with silencers.

The trunk is richly enough dosed. The concrete 506 liters satisfied us with their capacity and we were slightly less satisfied with the final product. Some edges are sharp and raw, and hydraulics do not help the mechanism when opening and closing, so the boot lid often closes by itself. This, combined with awkwardness, can lead to a concrete cut on the head, as happened to the author of this post. Opening is possible only with an internal button or key. Some people like this solution, some don't, but it certainly helps to ensure the safety of luggage, because, for example, no one can open the trunk while you are standing at a traffic light. We know this is almost not the case here, but it is a fairly popular sport in some of the markets where the Peugeot 301 will be sold.

The test "Tristoenko" was equipped with a well-known and quite popular engine in the PSA line - a 1,6-liter turbodiesel with a capacity of 68 kilowatts. Acceleration, flexibility and top speed are at the level of practical convenience, so it's hard to fault this engine. It wakes up at about 1.800 rpm (below which it almost does not react), spins up to 4.800 rpm and even in fourth gear approaches the red field of the tachometer. Briefly about the cost. According to the on-board computer, the engine needs 100 liters per 1.950 kilometers per hour in fifth gear (4,5 rpm), at 130 (2.650) 6,2 and at maximum speed 180 (3.700) 8,9 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers . . It's worth noting that at higher speeds, the soundstage becomes quite uncomfortable, as the weak insulation can't keep the noise out.

The Peugeot 301 offers us a pretty clear idea of the regulations that are currently most relevant in the automotive industry. This is not high technology, not ecology, not power - this is the economy. For a reasonable price, offer a set of sufficient quality and a product that will successfully withstand time and mileage.

Overall rating (279/420)

  • The technical base is really not on a rocket plane, but everything is enough for a reasonable price. Added to the vehicle are ease of maintenance, longer service intervals and durability under heavy use.

  • Exterior (10/15)

While this type of sedan looks pretty dry, the 301 has a pretty fresh look.

  • Interior (81/140)

The capacity rating would be better if there was more headroom for passengers. The trunk is large, but inferior in finish.

  • Engine, transmission (49

    / 40)

Sharp and economical engine. The chassis has been tuned for a more comfortable ride.

  • Driving performance (50

    / 95)

Average but predictable driving position. Inaccurate movements of the gear lever.

  • Performance (23/35)

Bouncy enough for city traffic and maneuverable despite the five-speed gearbox.

  • Security (23/45)

Only four airbags and a slightly longer stopping distance are the reasons for the worst rating.

  • Economy (43/50)

The price is the strongest advantage of this car. With a moderate right leg, fuel consumption is also not excessive.
