Test: registration Volvo XC90 D5

Scandinavian cars are different, they have something that others do not have, and of course there are flaws. But the latter are relatively few and easily masked by the desire for a comfortable and, above all, safe car. Because they want their cars to be free of car accident deaths as soon as possible, it's clear that with this promise, or rather vision, they can easily convince customers who need a safe car in the first place. . In any case, these Volvos have been around for decades and nothing has changed now. But the new XC90 isn't just a safe car. Most would agree that this is a design-friendly car, in fact it's hard to find a more design-appropriate car in this class at the moment. But since form is a relative concept, there is no point in dealing with it.

It's just that some people like it right away, while others don't. But we can agree with those we like and those we don't that it's bright and interesting enough to keep attention on the road. In general, the front end seems to be one of the most beautiful in the class, as despite the dimensions of the car it is relatively clean and delicate, which is finally confirmed by the excellent drag coefficient (CX = 0,29), which is among the lowest in the class. Although the headlights are small, the LED daytime running lights really make them stand out. It is clear that merit can also be attributed to the large mask, which, by the large logo in the middle, makes it clear which brand the car belongs to. Even less exciting, as in most cases, is the image from the side, and otherwise the rear of the car, which is also above average elegant due to the tall and sloping taillights, but at the same time completely recognizable (Volvo, of course).

The black test car did a pretty good job of hiding how big it actually was. If, of course, you look at it from afar; when he comes up and sits next to another car, the ambiguity is gone. Its length is almost five meters, and even more impressive is its width - 2.008 millimeters. As a result, of course, there is a lot of space inside. So much so that the buyer might consider two extra seats neatly stowed away in the luggage compartment when not needed. And it should be emphasized that the seats in the third row are not just emergency, but quite decent seats, on which even an adult passenger can spend more than an emergency and a short trip. For many, the new XC90 offers even more positive changes to the interior. With her, the Scandinavians really made an effort. Of course, this largely depends on the level of equipment - so it can only be black or in a two-tone combination (test car), but it can also be multi-colored or decorated not only with leather, but also with real Scandinavian wood. . And yes, if you're willing to pay, you can also consider real Scandinavian crystal in the new Volvo XC90. In any case, in the end, it is important that everything works.

Volvo made sure that the car had as few switches or buttons as possible. So most of them are actually on the multifunction steering wheel, and there are only eight of them in the cabin, the rest have been replaced by a large central touch screen. Surely someone will say that the Scandinavians installed the iPad on Wednesday, and I think (albeit unofficially) this will not be so far from the truth at all - at least some of the equipment is more than similar. Perhaps its control is even better, since it does not need to be touched at all to move (left, right, up and down), which means that on cold winter days we can “play” with it even with gloves on. However, some practice is needed, especially while driving, when on bumps we must press another key instead of the desired one.

We can help ourselves, for example, by placing our thumb on the edge of the screen and then pressing with our index finger. Proven to be effective. Volvo says the new XC90 could be equipped with over a hundred different safety systems. The latter were also huge in the test car, as evidenced of course by the difference between the base price and the test car price. I doubt every driver needs anything, but we can certainly mention the camera that monitors the entire area around the car, the gorgeous and well-adjustable seats, and the Bowers & Wilkins sound system that can also reproduce the sound of an orchestra. in the concert hall. Therefore, it is not surprising that almost all the members of the Auto magazine editorial staff in the Volvo XC90 felt very good. Almost everyone easily found the right place behind the wheel, and of course, we all just listened very loudly to the radio or music from external players.

However, as always, the story called XC90 has two endings. If the first is the form and a pleasant interior, then the second should be the engine and chassis. Volvo has now decided to install only four-cylinder engines in its cars. They can also be supported by turbochargers, but on the other hand, this means that there will be no more six-cylinder or even eight-cylinder units that spin, so the driver will be happy to turn off even such a good sound system. I'm not saying it's not good, but the competition actually offers bigger, more powerful engines for the same money that are significantly more agile, faster, and simply no more wasteful. Check? If you haven't tried them yet, Volvo's four-cylinder diesel engine is impressive too. 225 “horsepower” and 470 Nm is enough to provide a more dynamic ride with the XC90. This is helped by the air suspension, which offers sportier settings in addition to Classic and Eco mode (except that might not be enough). In addition, the chassis of the XC90 (like many Volvos) is quite loud. It's not that it doesn't work well, it just sounds like...

Maybe a little too much for such a premium car. Therefore, the fourteen days of communication in the end caused mixed feelings. The design of the car itself is pleasant, the interior is above average, and the engine and chassis, if not from others, then from German competitors, are still lagging behind. Also because the final price of the test car does not differ significantly from competitors, and some also offer completely new models. But as it was written in the beginning, like other Volvo, the XC90 may not impress right away. Obviously, some things will take time. Some even like it, as the XC90 could be the car that sets it apart from the rest of the competition. Or, in other words, stand out from the crowd. That means something, doesn't it?

Overall rating (361/420)

  • Like most Volvo models, the XC90 is not just about its design that sets it apart from the rest of its competitors. In addition, it offers many innovations and improvements that Volvo can be proud of. But below the line of competitors, at least the German ones, have not yet been overtaken.

  • Exterior (14/15)

When it comes to design, it is considered by many to be the prettiest in the class. And we won't mind.

  • Interior (117/140)

Definitely different from the competition, with a center display it takes a little practice.

  • Engine, transmission (54

    / 40)

We can't really blame the engine too much, but it looks like the larger and more powerful engines of the competition do better in such large and especially heavy vehicles.

  • Driving performance (58

    / 95)

In principle, there is nothing wrong with the drive, but the selected driving modes are not felt enough.

  • Performance (26/35)

While Volvo denies this, the single XNUMX-liter four-cylinder seems too small for such a large and, above all, expensive car.

  • Security (45/45)

If anything, we cannot blame Volvo for safety.

  • Economy (47/50)

Competitive XNUMX-liter diesels are more powerful and nearly as economical.
