Test: Renault Captur Initiale Paris TCE 150 EDC (2020) // New favorite in the class

With the Captur, Renault has successfully presented a new design for the first generation. In fact, only the Nissan Juke was ahead of the Captur in a market with similar starting points, a car with a lot of controversy about its exterior design. Renault did not make such a "mistake", the good shape was certainly one of the most important reasons for buying.

The second approach has not changed either. We can still write this nice shape... First of all, ladies, as far as the experience of current shopping habits suggests. For the young and for those who once were. In short: beloved. The passing teenager was the most specific: "Sir, what a beautiful car you have!" Well, that was a surprise, something that one woman didn't offer me for a very, very long time.

But since this is ultimately true, I have never met a person who would disagree with the conclusion that Captur likes it. Perhaps also because it was not even changed too much, but only slightly lengthened (which at first glance is not noticeable), emphasizing the characteristic lines (even with LED backlighting). Athe car has become 11 cm longer, the wheelbase has also increased by 2 cm. Of course, Renault has still retained everything that the exterior offered, the novelty has slightly larger wheels.

Inside, everything is different. Due to the longer body and wheelbase, the headroom has also improved, although not as much as one would expect given the current length. Here at Renault, the main concern is to have more space in the back seat and in the trunk. Moving the rear seat longitudinally by a whopping 16 cm, the flexibility is really great, and in the full forward position we can place an additional 536 liters of luggage behind the backrest.

This orientation is complemented by a capacity different dumps per car Renault claims a volume of 27 liters. The interior design of the Captur is almost identical to that of the Clio. For the most part, I can see that this is a much better experience and even the quality of most of the parts in the cabin is good to the touch. For now, the driver can only check speed or other basic data using conventional sensors, and digital sensors will be available soon.

So we will have to wait for a better look and feel that we are living in a digital age. Of course, the center 9,3-inch touchscreen is eye-catching., you will find almost all control functions on it. The availability and menus are quite updated, it is worth noting that Captur also speaks Slovenian. The control of the ventilation device was left with the classic rotary knobs.

Likewise, everything related to sound is taken care of by a satellite directly under the steering wheel. This completely Renault-specific solution is actually a good solution, but for those new to the brand it will take some practice to make it really intuitive to use, because all the buttons are covered by the steering wheel.

The spaciousness of the front seats is solid, but if the buyer opts for a skylight, it takes up a few inches above their heads and is not the best solution for those who have grown up a long time ago. It is definitely worth mentioning that Renault offers a lot of comfort and almost premium equipment in the Initiale Paris, with the leather-hooded seats that stand out the most.

Rear passengers are slightly less enjoyable. The edge of the windows rises quite sharply towards the back, so we notice a little less airiness and light from behind. However, all passengers who can still remember the trip in the last part of the first generation Clio will be satisfied, because there may indeed be more space there than in the previous one.

She's not that convincing implementation of the central environment of the automatic transmission gear lever... This is by no means a premium look, we are back in the ordinary world. Moreover, for some reason this lever is the "author" of the only not very convincing part of our Captur test.

By far the big surprise is the difference in launch behavior compared to several other Renaults.that we have met and driven with this engine combination before. I couldn't say with certainty if the car had a hard start, with occasional sudden knocks, simply due to poor tuning of the dual-clutch transmission.

The Captur also did not give the impression of the agility and adequate power that would be expected from such a powerful drive machine. True, engine noise is rarely heard even at high revs in the cabin. But he, too, was not so sure about the acceleration.. It performed relatively well in terms of fuel consumption, but after all that, my advice to customers is simple - you can also choose a slightly less powerful version of the engine.

Captur is very similar on the way to his classmates, as well as his brother Clio. If the road surface is as flat as possible, driving on it will be comfortable and safe enough. It handles well in corners and the car does not tilt disproportionately due to its height. Passengers feel somewhat less comfortable on rough roads. This is where car design and large wheels come into play.... But the matter remains within a fairly controlled framework and there is no particularly sharp criticism in this direction.

Equipped with electronic automatic driving and safety assistants, the Captur is almost ready now. As standard, the Captur is equipped with Lane Keeping Assist, Emergency Braking Assist, Active Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Distance Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition and the richest Initiale Paris equipment. degree camera and warning of an approaching intersection when reversing from parking lots.

With everything mentioned at the end of the Captur, we also get a fairly good view of the vehicle's movement while parking.because otherwise oblique back transparency is not the best. Parking is provided by an optional hands-free parking system. Electronic assistants also allow the convoy to be guided automatically, which Captur does a great job with.

In terms of connectivity, Captur 4G connection turns out, which automatically updates the equipment, when using navigation, you can also use the address search engine Google, there is also My Renault, a mobile application to help drivers of this brand.

Connecting to a mobile phone via a gadget "Easy connection"who is also known for Clio. We connect the smartphone to the CarPlay or Android Auto apps via cable, the reactions seem, at least when I talk about CarPlay, to be pretty quick. If the phone can do it, there is the option of wireless charging.

Captur XNUMXnd edition is a very solid product. With everything Renault has added to its path, it will surely be easier to deal with the rather wide list of competitors that emerged during the reign of the first Captur (one of the best-selling in its class). Perhaps the appearance is indeed the main goal of the Captur, and its attractiveness in terms of appearance is guaranteed. But while constantly listening to some criticism, Renault at the Captur has gone above and beyond to remain one of the most popular.

Overall rating (401/600)

  • Renault has significantly improved everything that was not so well received in the first Captur, especially the quality of the cabin, as well as the infotainment system.

  • Cab and trunk (78/110)

In style similar to the Clio, the Captur only offers a reasonable amount of passenger space, but looks very convincing in the boot, thanks in part to a longitudinally movable rear bench that is difficult to adjust.

  • Comfort (74

    / 115)

Passenger wellbeing is enhanced by a good user experience and reliable communications. Good engine and wheel noise insulation. Satisfactory ergonomics.

  • Transmission (49

    / 80)

The engine and transmission were kind of disappointing, the same combination in the Megane gave a much better driving experience.

  • Driving performance (68

    / 100)

Very good driving experience on smooth surfaces is slightly impaired on potholed roads. Excellent handling and secure road handling.

  • Security (81/115)

With five stars from EuroNCAP, it has everything you need to make a good impression, as does the LED headlights.

  • Economy and environment (51

    / 80)

This is a bit disappointing in terms of normal lap fuel consumption, and with this Captur fully equipped, the price is already in the less acceptable range. But with a little less rich equipment, I would be completely satisfied.
