Тест: Renault Clio TCe 90 Energy Stop & Start Dynamique

This was most likely around 1990, and since then, the Clio is not only one of the vehicles available to buyers on several continents, but also one of the best-selling vehicles in Europe, which is said to have greatly helped Renault in overall sales growth. ... , in enhancing reputation and increasing sales. The muse has clearly done its job.

Now the fourth-generation Clio is resting a little on the glory of the first three, but that's not enough as customers are especially critical in these times. Either way, most will be attracted by its appearance, which seems more mature than before, with smoother edges to match the times and new design styles, and an image that looks much more like a larger Mégane than ever before. After all, the Clio has also grown so much that it is only a decimeter shorter than the first generation Mégane.

Some more criticism will be given to its interior. In terms of design, he found a good path between Twingo and Mégane, and between established design approaches and the avant-garde. Good sensors, easy to read, break wide glossy decorative frames, making them at times attractive and sometimes even annoying when the sun hits those glossy surfaces.

The production also seems, at least according to a test comparable to the best, and the equipment here also clearly depends on the chosen configuration. In the Dynamiqu test, it was just right for today, including (manual, but efficient enough) air conditioning and a rich infotainment system. And about him a little later. (Some) interior materials deserve great, but not insignificant criticism, since, for example, there is no fabric on the inside of the door, and in general, the selected materials are not very happy with either the eyes or the fingers. Slightly jammed levers on the steering wheel (headlights, wipers) also caused some complications, and the wiper arm again has no movement for a quick short wipe.

The driver's working space is very good with the steering wheel (diameter, thickness, grip) and position behind it (steering wheel, pedal and gear lever ratio), as well as ergonomics. Renault has found good solutions for the installation and design of the necessary switches, right down to the cruise control switches and the audio system. True, they are not illuminated on the steering wheel, but since there are only four of them (for cruise control), it is not difficult to learn them by heart.

It is also necessary to get used to the position of the ventilation rotary knob to direct the air, because the knob is not easily visible. Even more commendable is the infotainment's large center display, which convinces with its superior touch sensitivity (which is not so obvious) and simple, intuitive control menus. Its front-firing speakers boast a "bass reflex", but keep in mind that they are designed for decent sound, not for the wonders of sound philharmonic.

The driver is also very knowledgeable about the overtaking warning, which tries to help save fuel but still suffers from providing some information; The outside temperature data is just one of many trip computers, and turning on the cruise control or speed limiter each time “manages” the trip computer data to be called up each time.

The trunk is said to be the place to write in the class, which is nice, but only for those who don't use the extension option. Even on the new Clio, only the rear seat back (third) folds down, and there's still body reinforcement between the bench and the (basic) trunk, meaning an unprepared step is created when unfolded. It also lacks a power outlet and hooks for bags, and the handles for closing the rear doors are especially inconvenient.

Choosing this new generation engine means two things: either you're not drawn to it (financially) or you don't really like to ride on the road. The engine itself is very good, but in this body it is underpowered in terms of torque - if considered solely in terms of torque. The torque curve is amazing as it picks up fast enough for the Clio to pull well in fifth gear at 1.800 rpm. This is largely due to the addition of turbochargers, which have another nice practical feature - they allow the engine to run longer at a selected speed on a climb than if the engine were a classic (non-turbocharged) engine of the same maximum power. It should be borne in mind that the engine has "only 90 horsepower", which today in such a body does not mean sportiness.

However, with a little persistence with the right foot, the engine can also be more lively, especially since the turbo loves to spin a little. Electronics stops him at 6.000 (the beginning of the "yellow" field), where he climbs with a little patience in fourth (penultimate) gear, when the speedometer shows 174 kilometers per hour, and the fifth gear can only maintain this speed. ... But this is bad for the wallet, since the current consumption at wide open throttle is about 13 liters per 100 kilometers, otherwise we read the following values for this Clio: in fifth gear and at constant 60 kilometers per hour 4,2, per 100 4,8, 130 6,9 and 160 10,0 liters per 100 km.

The data are conditionally reliable, since the values on the on-board computer change quite quickly, and also fluctuate significantly. However, in practice, this engine performed well in the consumption test, proving that six liters per 100 kilometers is not a skill that breaks the normal rhythm of everyday movement or religious renunciation.

The engine has three cylinders and from this point of view is recognizable both by sound and vibration, the latter more or less only at idle. It's not annoying, but annoying noise above 130 kilometers per hour becomes noticeably disturbed when listening to music or talking between passengers. Even the ride itself is not particularly enjoyable, although this Clio is very enjoyable and easy to drive.

Those who will ride it in the corners will not be disappointed - the steering wheel is almost sporty, pleasantly direct and with excellent feedback, so the steering is always safe and comfortable. In this regard, the position on the road is also very good, since the Clio is impressively neutral even in very fast long corners. However, in terms of physics, this Clio also behaves like most semi-rigid "land" cars - the rear tends to overtake the front when the driver releases the gas or even brakes into a corner. Fortunately, the reactions are within moderate limits, and the control - also thanks to the steering wheel - is light and frisky, if the driver is like that.

Unexpectedly different (for this class) feel is also the feel when braking - when the right amount of force is applied to the pedal and when the driver determines which wheel is on the verge of spinning. But this does not mean that the brakes are sporty, as the stopping distance is within the middle class. However, this means that for an experienced driver, driving can also be safer.

With brakes, though praiseworthy, this generation of Clio will not go down in history. It's true, however, that overall the fourth-generation Clio is a car that's a pleasure to drive and will most likely own and use every day. However, like any other item on sale, the muse will benefit him. Times are not the best, even for Renault, and the Clio once again has a big responsibility.

Overall rating (301/420)

  • The Clio has grown to such an extent that, especially the five-door and with this engine, it is a good family choice (assuming there is more family car today), somewhat more modest type, but quite fast and economical. An easy ride with it is also an important benefit.

  • Exterior (13/15)

The small car, which has already grown to the size of the first generation Mégane, wants to be similar to the current one (Mégane) and thus prove its maturity.

  • Interior (87/140)

Very good sensors and control ergonomics, good, correct equipment, basically a large trunk, but nothing more. Also the materials are below average.

  • Engine, transmission (50

    / 40)

The engine and steering gear are impressive, as are the rest of the mechanics at a high level.

  • Driving performance (56

    / 95)

Excellent road holding and braking sensitivity, but slightly sensitive to crosswinds and only middle pedals.

  • Performance (18/35)

The turbocharged engine delivers good torque, at least moderate flexibility over a wide rev range, and acceleration is on par with a classic gasoline engine with so much power.

  • Security (35/45)

Euro NCAP gave it all the stars, although the fact that it only has four airbags is a bit confusing. Slightly small rubbed surface of the rear window.

  • Economy (42/50)

The average consumption on the test is surprising. Otherwise, it is mostly slightly more expensive among peers, but we predict a slight loss in value.
