Grille test: Kia Cee'd Sportwagon 1.6 CRDi LX Champion

You will first notice the work of Peter Schreier. The German did a good job with his design team at the Kia Design Center in Frankfurt, as the new Cee'd is also liked by most because of the shape of the van. And if we know that the predecessor (which was otherwise 35 millimeters shorter, five millimeters shorter and 10 millimeters narrower) is well received by buyers, the newcomer has enough trump cards up his sleeve that he does not need to fear, even in uncertainty. once. Not to be missed are the LED daytime running lights (in the test car only in the front, for better lighting in the rear you have to pay 300 euros), as well as excellent headlights for cornering lights, but we were worried. with dim and high beam. Would a short stop with a service technician help?

However, you definitely won't need a service technician due to the workmanship as the Slovak factory obviously doesn't know Monday. You know, it's a proverb when workers are out of shape after a busy weekend and they just put the parts together instead of filigree. Korean controls obviously work, so at first glance, it’s easy to tell that the Cee'd is made in Germany or Japan.

With the key in hand, regardless of the size of the buttocks or the length of the legs, you will immediately feel a good driving position. The steering wheel is adjustable in all directions, compared to the five-door version, the headroom is 21 millimeters more. The leather steering wheel, gear lever and handbrake lever add a dash of prestige, while the Bluetooth assist systems, cruise control and speed limiter are so easy to use that even older, novice owners won't have to learn the instructions. At Kia, they were even so friendly that they provided space under the roof for the driver's glasses and fitted a slot in the sun visor into which a parking or road ticket could be stuck.

If you add a radio with a CD player (and an interface for MP3) and a two-channel automatic air conditioner, then there is almost nothing. Nooo, rivals are already gracing the big touchscreens found only in the Cee'd Sportwagon with the richest EX Maxx hardware. And interestingly, in fact, oddly enough, the most powerful 1.6 CRDi turbo diesel at 94 kilowatts or 128 "horsepower" is not available at all with EX Maxx equipment, but you can only think of the penultimate equipment called EX Style. So if you want the most powerful turbo diesel and a big screen with navigation and camera to help you when reversing, you will have to look around for accessories. Yes, exactly where the thousand euros is written.

A glance at the back bench shows that there is enough room for older children, you just have to come to terms with the manual movement of the side windows. The trunk is adapted to the needs of the family: 528 liters and three compartments (the main, the first cellar for small things and the second cellar for a few small things that will make up the company's "kit" for repairing punctured rubber) will also satisfy partners who have a habit of taking with them each a walkway full of rubbish, and thanks to the rear bench that can be divided by a third, it can also accommodate a large stroller or small pushchair. With an inverted back bench, we get a whopping 1.642 liters, which is huge, to put it mildly.

Since the Kia Cee'd Sportwagon is tailored to family pressures, we should of course consider the sporty power steering program as a fallback. The Comfort Driving mode will probably be used a few times, but otherwise it's pretty indirect in all three modes (other than those mentioned, of course), so it can't compete with Focus or Golf mode. Don't get me wrong: comfort is what you'd expect from a machine like this, but don't be fooled by sportiness as it's not guaranteed by a power steering program, a more comfortable chassis, much less fuel consumption. - efficient tyres.

The motor, along with precise clutch and throttle action (heel-mounted!), Was previously suited for slightly more awkward drivers as it doesn't bounce or shake when starting inaccurately, but bravely withstands the harassment of a less sensitive driver. The reason for this is that the engine continuously revs from 1.500 rpm and does not stall until 4.500 rpm when the red field appears. But there is no need to race, as it works best from 2.000 to 3.000 rpm. Interestingly, when we drove in a normal circle with speed limits and rarely exceeded 2.000 rpm on a transparent scale, we consumed only 4,2 liters per 100 kilometers.

Is ISG (Idle Stop and Go) the most important when it comes to short stop engine shutdown, low rolling resistance tires, AMS smart alternator or active A / C compressor control according to the current situation? ... The Kia Cee'd Sportwagon, especially with the word EcoDynamic, is an economical car if a turbodiesel is installed under the hood (with special electronic engine management) and if the driver adapts the driving style.

Sound insulation is also excellent, at least for this class of vehicles, as the new model has 14 percent thicker windshields, exterior mirrors with less air resistance, new engine mounts with more vibration damping and foam filling in the struts and other hollow parts. hollow beams, acoustic hood and rear double-layer gas shock absorbers.

Of course, the Kia Cee'd Sportwagon is not a perfect car, but together with the technically similar Hyundai i30 Wagon, this is a school model car that the family will be completely satisfied with. No small print. Jokers with discounts and a seven-year warranty (transferable, i.e. not tied to the first owner, but with a mileage limit!) Are just a bonus.

evaluation

  • It's not as sporty as the Focus, and not as boringly perfect as the Golf. But remember, the Koreans in the automotive industry are no longer following suit, they are already setting the standard - especially for competitors.
