Grille test: Mercedes-Benz GLC coupe 250 d 4Matic

We humans are strange creatures and we definitely bleed. We like what we allow to be, or what is trendy and appealing to a wider, even better-chosen crowd. We won't be making cold soup, but a long time ago, many years ago, a Korean car manufacturer offered a coupe-themed crossover. And they tore it apart. In a negative sense, of course.

Then, a little less than ten years ago, he brought the BMW X6 onto the road. People were terrified of the shape, wondering what such a car would look like if it didn't have enough room in the back. But those who could not (and cannot) such a car complained, and it became a real hit among potential owners. They were different, proving to themselves (and their surroundings) that they could buy it. They wanted to stand out.

In less than a decade, the X6 is no longer alone on the roads. Along with all the others who have already been or will be, they were joined by the great German rival Mercedes-Benz. His star shone in all its glory. If we were still fooling around with the bigger GLE coupe, the smaller GLC coupe would be a real hit. It is clear, mainly because of the basics. The larger GLE is the successor to the famous ML, the design remains the same, only the shape has changed. With the GLC model, the situation is different. A descendant of the old GLK - brand new thanks to our Robert Leshnik, head of design at Mercedes-Benz, but also very popular. If the foundation is already good, it is clear that its upgrade is even better. Coupe GLC like from all sides. If it looks like a base GLC from the front, the sideline and obviously the rear is a hit to the fullest.

But not everyone is in shape. After all, the larger GLE coupe has a similar design, but its history, its chassis and, above all, its overly bulky driving feel don't complete the package as much as Mercedes would like. Another thing is the GLC coupe. The base GLC is already a good car, but above all, it's closer to a passenger car than the larger GLE, which is too bulky and loud. The GLC is quieter, more manageable and, most importantly, new both inside and out.

It's the same with the GLC Coupé. Along with a pleasant appearance, it also pampers with a pleasant interior and many will like it at first sight. So it was with the test machine. Although painted red, which is not a favorite with many, it did not bother. The whole image takes on so much that you forget about the color. It's even better inside. Above average working conditions await the driver, and the passengers do not suffer either. It is clear that well-being always depends on the amount of equipment and there really was a lot in the GLC test coupe. Of course, this is also indicated by the colossal surcharge, but the stars are not available to everyone.

The combination of red on the outside and red leather on the inside might be a double-edged sword, but it doesn't bother me that much this time. As with the exterior, the interior is dominated by elements of the AMG Line package, which ensures sportiness and the highest level of performance. The steering wheel feels good in the hand and is a pleasure to turn. Also because the chassis is sporty enough, but not too stiff thanks to the air suspension. A range of safety and assistance systems are available to the driver to make driving safer and more comfortable. A large movable glass roof completes the interior, illuminating and magnifying it optically.

In the engine? First of all, it should be noted that, unlike the larger GLE, the smaller GLC impresses with its soundproofing interior. This is not to say that the engine is not audible inside, but it is significantly less than that of its older brother. It also makes the ride more enjoyable. Another important element, of course, is the weight of the machine. To summarize, the smaller GLC coupe is lighter by just a small ton, which is of course huge in the automotive world. As a result, the GLC Coupé is more agile, responsive and generally more pleasant to drive. The 204-liter turbo diesel engine with 100 horsepower propels the car from 222 to XNUMX kilometers per hour in just over seven seconds, and the acceleration stops at XNUMX. This means that the GLC coupe is easy to learn even on endless tracks.

But winding roads are not afraid of him, since the already mentioned chassis also withstands a dynamic ride. Fuel consumption should be noted separately. It is clear that, depending on the driving style, it consumes 8,4 liters per 100 kilometers (average test), and the usual 5,4 liters per 100 kilometers does not seem high. That for a car owner worth over $ 80 shouldn't really be a problem.

Mercedes seems to have made a good car. This is why we can understand their expectations for so long. What they responded to their Bavarian counterparts, and now the X4 is in serious trouble. If you are looking for a car of this class, you can complete it. That's all!
