Among SUVs, the Mitsubishi Outlander is certainly at the forefront, but the smaller Mitsubishi ASX SUV breathes heavily around the neck. According to importer AC Mobil, they achieve a third of their sales with it, and more and more customers are opting for a front-wheel-drive petrol engine like the one we used in our tests.

The Mitsubishi ASX has recently been heavily revamped, most notably on the front end, which is much more attractive with a new grille and more added chrome.

Inside, with the exception of a slightly different steering wheel and a vastly improved infotainment system, which is also due to the fact that we drove the most equipped version with a gasoline engine, it has remained more or less the same, which by no means means bad. Mitsubishi ASX is a fairly spacious car, approaching a sedan in comfort. The only thing that worries him a little is the rather short movements of the front seat, otherwise we can't really blame him. With a base volume of 442 liters, the trunk is also great for use, and if you fold the rear bench, it can be significantly increased.

Sound comfort is less favorable, as the cab transmits a lot of sounds from the chassis and gusts of wind on the tall body, and the engine is also quite loud on the highway, which will benefit from the lack of sixth gear, especially when driving on the highway.

Unfortunately, the engine, despite the promising 117 "horses" on paper, which with a good 1,3 ton machine shouldn't have too much work, is rather underpowered. In the city, this is not so obvious, since in a busy city traffic you can move quite sovereignly, which is also associated with a strong chassis, which makes it more difficult on the track.

This is where the drawbacks emerge, mainly due to poor flexibility due to the "atmospheric" low torque of 154 Newton meters, which is only available at 4.000 rpm. Acceleration from 50 to 90 kilometers per hour in fourth gear takes more than 16 seconds, and from 80 to 120 kilometers per hour in fifth gear even more than 26 seconds. If we want to pick up speed faster, we need to downshift, which we got rid of in the era of turbocharged gasoline engines.

Unfortunately, the weakness of the engine is reflected in the relatively unfavorable fuel consumption, which in the test was 8,2 liters per hundred kilometers, and did not drop below 6,2 liters per hundred kilometers, even on a softer standard circle. So I definitely recommend that you add in a good thousand when you buy the Mitsubishi ASX, which costs a slightly worse, but not badly equipped, front-wheel drive turbo diesel version.

But even with a petrol engine, the Mitsubishi ASX is a totally useful, practical and comfortable vehicle if you just put up with the shortcomings of the transmission, or if it just suits your needs. Especially when you mention that you can get it for a pretty good price.
