Grille test: Opel Adam S 1.4 Turbo (110 kW)

For some reason, we are not used to Opel assigning the S-badge to the sport version of the model. We know very well that the sportiest versions come from the Opel Performance Center and therefore bear the OPC abbreviation. So is Adam S just "warming up" before the muscular Adam himself arrives? While the colors aren't as vibrant as regular Adams, the S version also looks very vibrant.

Large 18-inch wheels with red brake calipers, a red roof and a large roof spoiler (which, by the way, according to the Opel in white coats, pushes the car to the ground at maximum speed with a force of 400 N) indicate that this is a little more dynamic version. Just dynamic in shape? Not really. The Adama S is powered by a 1,4 kilowatt turbocharged 110-liter petrol engine, which is activated primarily at 3.000 rpm. The chrome exhaust promises a lot of loudness and rage, but the four-cylinder sounds pretty low-key. Even the gearbox is not up to the cavalry, as it resists fast shifting, especially when shifting from first to second gear.

However, in the corners, the improved chassis, precise steering and wide tires come to the fore. Turning around with Adam is a pleasure if we do it actively. If we drive only dreamily, we are quickly troubled by the stiffer chassis, the short wheelbase and the consequent poor handling of bumps. Leaving aside the notoriously usable rear bench, passengers in the Adam S are well catered for. Recar seats are great, and even a Porsche 911 GT3 wouldn't be ashamed of them. Even the thick-rimmed leather steering wheel feels good to hold.

The aluminum pedals are well spaced, the brake pedal is close to the accelerator pedal, so the use of the toe-toe joke technique is small. Otherwise, the rest of the environment is more or less the same as that of ordinary Adam. The center console is adorned with a seven-inch multifunctional touchscreen, which, in addition to the built-in radio and multimedia player, allows communication with the smartphone (sometimes it takes a long time to connect when you start the car).

In front of the driver there are transparent counters and an on-board computer with slightly outdated graphics and inconvenient steering through the steering wheel. For example, when cruise control is on, it cannot display the set speed. While such an Adam is a lot of fun, you could write that the S could just mean the "soft" version of the athletic toddler. The real Adami could still wait for the OPC Adam, and this can easily be attributed to the dynamically oriented Eve.

evaluation

  • Don't even think that the S label is purely cosmetic. The car is dynamically tuned, but there is still a lot of room for improvement that is (probably) in preparation in the OPC department.
