Grille test: Peugeot 308 SW 1.6 e-HDi 115 Allure

Special inside, liked the outside: so we could briefly refer to the Peugeot 308 van, traditionally referred to as the SW. Thanks to the new EMP2 (Efficient Modular Platform) that allows for more longitudinal flexibility, the SW has a wheelbase 11 centimeters longer than the sedan and you have 22 centimeters less parking space due to the large rear overhang. That is why there is a lot of it inside, because the large wheelbase is especially noticeable with more volume in the back seat. But spaciousness is not the only surprise of this car.

Most of all I remember the visit to the locals when I went with my mother to the store. “I probably would not even know how to start this car, let alone set the right temperature inside,” said the already approaching mother, who still boasts that she has an A driving test in her pocket Yes, Vespa is used to it. be a very useful thing… But since technology is obviously no stranger to her, she soon discovered that it starts with a button that the designers placed on the middle ledge in front of the gear lever, and that the central (touch) multi-function screen is easier to use than a hundred separate buttons . When I showed her the massage and heated driver's seat and the semi-automatic parking system, she enthusiastically said, "I'd love that too!"

The 308 SW, which is one of the most spacious vans in its class with a volume of 610 liters and a very useful additional cargo partition (€ 100), is unique. The speed and coolant temperature gauges, located on the right side of the dashboard, have a scale from right to left to get used to. Some still complain about the layout and modest size of the steering wheel, but I can confirm once again that with my 180 centimeters, looking at the gauges in this car, I had no problems.

If you think that due to its modest size the ride looks like a zig-zag one, since in theory almost invisible fixes on the steering wheel should be known while driving, you will be disappointed: there is no problem with that! And the fact that the interior lighting, made with LED technology, is perfectly complemented by headlights, in which the daytime running lights, as well as muted and long headlights are made in the same technology, probably need not be emphasized.

With the already rich Allure equipment, additional equipment (electric seat adjustment with lumbar adjustment for 300 euros, navigation device with camera and semi-automatic parking for 1.100 euros, Denon audio system for 550 euros, active cruise control for 600 euros, huge panoramic Cielo roof with an area 1,69 m2 for 500 euros and leather in the salon for 1700 euros), which also saved, but then the interior would no longer be so prestigious and did not feel so excellent.

The test Peugeot 308 SW only had a 1,6-liter turbodiesel under the hood, which speaks in favor of lighter weight along with aluminum front fenders, which requires an active driver. To take advantage of all 115 "horsepower", you need to use the six-speed gearbox diligently, otherwise the turbo will not work and the car will start to choke. But active driving pays off: firstly, because fully loaded, sovereignly overcame the Vrhnik slope, also significantly exceeding the permissible speed, and secondly, because the consumption on our normal lap in the ECO program was only 4,2 liters. Big. It's worth noting that we didn't notice any vibrations and that the silence of the engine immediately replaced the noise from the Denon's overhead speakers.

If we already started from the platform, let's end this. Thanks to the use of modern materials (especially very strong steels), new construction processes (laser welding, hydrodynamic design) and an optimized structure, the weight of one platform has been reduced by 70 kg. This is also one of the reasons that engines can always be smaller in volume and consume more modestly, without affecting the size or carrying capacity of the vehicle. That's expected from the van version too, isn't it? Now you can see that the steering wheel is almost irrelevant in this story.

evaluation

  • The 308 station wagon and the 1,6-liter turbodiesel are diametrically opposed, but they complement each other perfectly: the former is large and generous, while the latter is small and humble.
