Grille test: Renault Megane Coupe dCi 130 Energy GT Line

I was reminded of this by my son, who is old enough to ask me how fast each car goes. Or at least what number is written on the speedometer. At 270 km / h on the new Megane's dashboard, we both smiled, not condescendingly, but enthusiastically. No, it doesn't go 270, but it fits very well with a 1,6-liter turbo diesel.

On the same day, we had fun at home with a game that you probably all know: you say a word, and the interlocutor must answer as quickly as possible what comes to mind. As we insisted on this for quite some time, ideas began to dry up, and then the son apparently remembered Megan in front of the house. Renault, he said, and I like to come out of the gun family. Coupe, he continues, and I'm RS Hmm, really?

The Megane is more than just a family car, and the coupe is far from just a semi-racing RS. Immediately I say that the combination is on fire. The new look can be discussed in inn style all month long, but there will still be those who like it and those who don't. We can only add that it looks much better in real life than in the photos, and that the LED daytime running lights that wrap around the front bumper complement the Renault family image nicely.

At the same time, they scare those who are too brave in the passing lane to retreat to the faster ones. Of course, everything we've recently written about the wild version of Redbull also applies to the bodywork: a large and bulky door, a hard-to-reach seat belt, an often muddy rear window, and poor rear visibility. In short, a typical coupe. But the moment you sit in the seats, wrap your head around the massive yet sporty leather steering wheel and grip the six-speed gear lever, you immediately forget about the little hassle. Then it's fun time, yes, driving pleasure.

Could a smaller turbodiesel deliver driving pleasure, especially in a sports coupe? If you are not quite a fan of gasoline engines and a fan of diesel versions, the answer is obvious: you can. But in a different way. Torque needs to be used (the Megane offers up to 80 percent of maximum torque from 1.500 rpm !!) and a fast gearbox that easily follows the jump motor with six ratios. The turbocharger does its job with such satisfaction that it surprised us in the editorial office that under the hood the working volume is slightly more than one and a half liters. To keep your feelings from lying, take a look at our acceleration measurements, they are better than the factory ones. There are no big compromises here, as the noise and vibration of the engine are almost invisible, but it has many advantages, such as less weight due to the modest size of the engine (position!) And moderate fuel consumption. That's why the Megana 1.6 dCi 130 is a pleasure to bump into a winding road, because in addition to a slightly stiffer chassis, brakes and precise steering system have proven themselves, take your kids to kindergarten and school and head home to your wife. at a consumption of about 5,5 liters. We used 5,7 liters on a regular lap, but with a remark that the Stop & Start system did not work most of the time due to low temperatures.

What does the GT Line mean, the richest of the three models? Of course, the GT designation alludes to sporting accessories, from the sporty chassis and previously acclaimed seats to specially designed front and rear bumpers to 17-inch wheels ... That's why the Renault Sport branding on the doorstep deserves a scornful laugh. And if the numbers on the analog counter are less clear, you can still help yourself with the printout that you call up with the right steering wheel lever on the digital section of the dashboard.

Of course, the R-Link interface impressed us again, as we can control the radio, navigation (TomTom with beautiful graphics!), Hands-free system, Internet-connected applications, etc. via a seven-inch (18-centimeter) screen. which is also intuitive and touch sensitive. The update that the interface has become more useful and convenient is undoubtedly suitable for him. It's also nice to see the carbon fiber imitation with a red line on the dash that ends with the GT Line lettering. Have we mentioned the sinfully beautiful red stitching on the steering wheel and gear lever?

The new Megane, at least a test one, will not leave you indifferent. So think again when you talk about the Megane simply as a relaxed family car, and the 1,6-liter turbodiesel just as fuel efficient.
