Grille test: Volkswagen Amarok 2.0 TDI (132 kW) 4 Motion Highline

First, of course, you need to clarify what kind of Amarok car it is. That he is different is clear to everyone. That it is large and therefore, probably, also bulky. In addition, another driver is required - especially one who does not care why the Amarok does not have a trunk (classic and closed) and why it is impossible to park with it in a city parking lot with narrow parking spaces, and especially one who does not want something for him hindered on the road. If you see yourself among all of the above, the Amarok could be the car of your dreams.

Namely, from afar, and especially inside, the car leaves no doubt about what brand it is. The workspace is great, and although large, it is perfectly ergonomic. Therefore, the driver cannot complain about the spaciousness and feel while driving, whether small and dry or large and fat. It is clear that even in the interior the Amarok cannot hide its origins and is thus closer than, say, a passenger car, to, say, the Volkswagen Transporter, which again, in principle, is nothing wrong. The Transporter is also a version of Caravelle, and even picky drivers love it.

The test Amarok was equipped with the Highline, which, like other Volkswagen vehicles, is of the highest standard. As such, the exterior offers 17-inch alloy wheels, body-colored flared fenders and a chrome rear bumper, front fog lamp covers, exterior mirror housings and some front grille elements. The rear windows are also modeled after passenger cars.

There are fewer sweets from passenger cars in the cabin, but chrome parts, a good radio tape recorder and Climatronic air conditioning are pampered.

The tested Amarok received the designation 2.0 TDI 4M. The two-liter turbodiesel is available in two versions: a weaker one with 140 horsepower and an even more powerful one with 180 horsepower. This was the case on the test machine, and there is not much to complain about its characteristics. Perhaps a plus for someone, a minus for someone - a drive. The 4M designation indicates permanent four-wheel drive with a Torsn differential in the middle. The basic drive layout is 40:60 in favor of the rear wheelset and provides the highest possible level of safety and reliability at all times, regardless of weather conditions. Of course, it does not allow you to turn off the four-wheel drive, for example, in dry weather, and at the same time does not offer a gearbox for use in emergency situations. Thus, the drive is a kind of compromise, since on the one hand it provides constant safety and reliability, and on the other hand it does not save fuel and is not designed for unusual off-road adventures.

So what about the question in the introduction? All in all, the Amarok certainly has a lot to offer. In terms of workmanship and quality, there is no doubt that the Volkswagen signature is fully justified. The second is shape, meaning its competitors have a lot more muscle, or due to a newer date of birth, they might be nicer in design, but they might also be more accessible. But choosing between design, engines and build quality can sometimes be quite a challenge. However, we hint to you that if you choose Amarok, you will not be disappointed. You may also be interested in a special price, but in the end the decision will be up to you.

evaluation

  • Volkswagen Amarok is a car for real men. It's not for those who use a computer as work tools, because after all, it can't even be stored safely in the trunk unless you're thinking of a special box or upgrade. However, it can be a companion for adventurers who fit a bike or motorbike in it, and of course a great partner for riders who use it as a work machine and thus make full use of the open luggage space.
