With the Ignis, Suzuki revived its predecessor, which in the XNUMXs was also a kind of crossover, although at the time, of course, no one perceived it that way. The designers not only settled on the former Ignis, but also borrowed design cues from other Suzuki veterans. Three triangular lines on the C-pillar and headlights integrated into the mask have been carried over from the small sports car Cerva, the black AB pillars from the first generation Swift, the hood and fenders from the first generation. -generation Vitara.

That too is all that "old-fashioned" on the Ignis, as it's actually a completely modern car. It's also quite original in design, so some onlookers like it immediately, others don't, and no one can deny that you won't draw their attention on the road, especially if it's bright red paired with a shiny black roof. rims and other additives such as the Ignis test. With its body design, the Ignis also unmistakably displays the identity of a small SUV, or "ultra-compact SUV" as Suzuki called it, offering many advantages in a very small size.

Thanks to the raised body with four side doors, the current seat is much simpler at both the front and rear, and is also relatively high so the view through the large glass surfaces is very good. The semi-retracted longitudinally movable back bench is also convenient, if, of course, pushed back. If you need more trunk space than the less-luxurious 204-liter base, you can significantly increase it by sliding the rear bench forward, but then passenger legroom will quickly diminish. In terms of the practicality of the machine, there are also enough different recesses for storing more or less little things.

Like the outside, the Ignis is also special in terms of interior design. The diverse dashboard features a cylindrical air conditioning control unit that looks like a portable radio, and a large seven-inch touchscreen that lets you control radio, navigation and your phone and app connections, as well as on-screen control. Safety and driver assistance devices are controlled by direct switches that are clearly located on the dashboard. There were quite a few of them, since the test Ignis was well equipped.

Safety was ensured, among other things, by the AEB collision protection system and the lane departure warning system, which work on the basis of a stereo camera under the top edge of the windshield, and there were also start-off and start-off assistance systems. down steep trails, available mainly in combination with the Allgrip all-wheel drive that the test car had. The rear axle is rigid and, combined with the relatively large clearance from the ground, short overhangs and wheels fully pressed into the corners, makes it easier to overcome many of the bad bogie ruts when considering the limitations of viscous clutch power transmission and the fact that the machine is quite narrow and does not have any off-road mechanical devices. They can be great replacements for traction control and descent control systems, but they are by no means omnipotent.

However, due to the rigid rear axle, driving on bad roads can be quite hectic, and the disadvantages of a relatively short wheelbase also come to the fore. On the other hand, on beautiful roads, driving can be quite quiet and pleasant, helped by the naturally aspirated 1,2-liter four-cylinder engine, which with 90 “horses” on paper does not have a lot of power, but also has not very heavily loaded. Due to the use of hard materials, an empty Ignis weighs just over 900 kilograms even in all-wheel drive configuration, because it is small, and despite the raised body, its front surface is not that big.

This is evidenced by confident acceleration and fuel consumption, which in the test was relatively good - 6,6 liters, and on a standard lap - even 4,9 liters of gasoline per hundred kilometers. The engine is relatively quiet, but wind noise around the body and chassis sounds pick up quickly. On the positive side of the car is also the precise five-speed gearbox, which is tuned in such a way that in the city, which in any case remains the main environment of Ignis, you can drive completely sovereignly and not lack power.

What about the price? €14.100 for a test Ignis is no small amount, but you can buy it with less equipment and with all-wheel drive for a much cheaper €9.350. Its characteristics of urban transport will not be worse, and the engine and transmission remain the same. Maybe he will give up a little earlier only on less well-groomed soil.

Overall rating (317/420)

  • The Suzuki Ignis is virtually unmatched in the market as only a Fiat Pando could fit next to it, at least when we're looking for small cars with sporty off-road design and all-wheel drive. Therefore, it can be chosen by many clients with special needs. However, I could impress many only with my form, which, of course, differs from the average.

  • Exterior (14/15)

You may or may not like it, but you can't blame the Suzuki Ignis for not being fresh in design.

  • Interior (101/140)

The interior is relatively spacious and practical, and boot capacity depends largely on whether someone is riding in the back seat.

  • Engine, transmission (52

    / 40)

The engine is not the most powerful, but when driving a car, it does not need to put too much effort. The chassis also allows for driving on poorly maintained trails.

  • Driving performance (53

    / 95)

Suzuki comes to the fore, especially in city traffic, where it is very agile, but it is also reliable on intercity roads and highways, and even rides where many big and powerful cars are hesitant.

  • Performance (19/35)

The engine is pretty solid, but perhaps Suzuki could consider installing the more powerful turbocharged gasoline three-cylinder that they offer in other models.

  • Security (38/45)

When it comes to safety, the Suzuki Ignis, at least in the tested version, is very well equipped.

  • Economy (40/50)

Consumption is in line with expectations, warranties are average, and the price is slightly higher.
