Test: Suzuki Swift 1.2 Deluxe (3 doors)

The vast majority of Slovenian buyers do not notice the small Swift car. Honestly, what models come to mind if we ask you about the subcompact class? Clio, Polo, 207… Aya, pa Corsa, Fiesta and Mazda Troika… Aveo, Yaris. Aya, Swift also belongs to this class? We can blame a sluggish brand image and a less active advertising agent for poor visibility in our market. But this is true: the first factor depends on the second, the second - mainly on financial resources, and the second - on sales ... And we are there. However, things seem to be looking up with the new Swift, and at the Stegna showroom where we took the test model, we heard (only) praise for the interesting interest in this car.

The models of the Japanese manufacturer Suzuki are world players. They are interested not only in the domestic, European and American markets, but also in the whole world. Wikipedia says Swift is made up of Japan, our eastern neighbors, China, Pakistan, India, Canada, and Indonesia. That it is present in this latter market, I can tell first-hand, since there are (and other Suzuki models) in Bali. For less than € 30 a day, you can rent it with a driver, while European competitors do not go unnoticed there at all. No one.

The fact that the same car is being sold all over the planet has two sides of the coin from the manufacturer's point of view. The advantage, logically, is price (production), since there is no need to develop different models for different markets, but on the other hand, it is more difficult to design and formulate a compromise that will appeal to Hayat, John and Franslin. in the same time. It isn't, is it? Due to winter conditions, steel wheels with plastic linings were added to the test car, which would more closely resemble a gaudy redesigned Golf 16, and on the original aluminum diameter of XNUMX inches (Deluxe grade) and with tinted rear windows, it became quite neat. Still a little Asian (but not like some Daihatsu's) and not cheap at all.

The biggest differences between old and new are the headlights and taillights, the shape of the C-pillar, the hood and the plastic around the fog lights, but if the cars are parked next to each other, you can increase the centimeter. can also be seen. The new one is nine centimeters longer (!), Half a centimeter wider, one centimeter taller and has a wheelbase five centimeters longer. More noticeable changes in the interior, especially in the dashboard. It is more modern and dynamic, more versatile and seems a little taller. The plastic has two different surfaces (the upper part is ribbed), it is solid, but very solid. The sense of nobility that we can expect from such a car is further enhanced by the metallic-colored plastic trim around the vents and on the doors.

Due to the very forward and vertical A-pillars, the lightness is very good and the forward visibility is excellent as well. The nearly vertical pillars cover a small portion of the field of view. However, during the rain, we noticed a problem that is already present in the old model: water flows at a higher speed (120 km / h or more) through the side windows, which interferes with the side view and the image in the rearview mirrors. ...

The size and number of storage spaces are satisfactory: in the door there is a double drawer with space for a half-liter bottle, one smaller drawer to the left of the steering wheel, and a larger one in the upper part of the center console. box with lid. without lock and light). The steering wheel with adjustable height and depth (except for the basic version of the configuration, the same applies to the height-adjustable driver's seat) has large and well-sensitive buttons for the radio, cruise control and mobile phone, and no comment on turning on the center console.

Due to the classic "dotted" (rather than graphical LCD screen), pairing a mobile phone via Bluetooth is an inconvenient task, but okay, we only do it once. The sound quality of blue-toothed mobile communication is not God knows what, or, I must say very loudly, the interlocutor on the other side of the network hears and understands us. The direction indicators can flash three times with a light touch on the steering wheel lever, and, unfortunately, the interior lighting does not turn on after the engine is turned off, but only when the door is opened.

The seats are solid, not at all Asian (too) small as one would expect. There is enough space above the head and around the body; The back bench is decently roomy and is most easily accessed through the passenger door. Only the right front seat moves forward, while only the driver's backrest is removed. Another annoying thing is that the front seat backs do not return to their original position, so the tilt has to be adjusted over and over again.

The trunk is the black dot of the Swift. It is only rated for 220 liters and the competition is one step ahead here as volumes range from 250 liters and up. At the same time, the loading edge is too high, so we store the contents as in a deep box, so our enthusiasm for the usability of the trunk is full, and the narrow shelf provides. This one with the tailgate, as usual, is not tied with ropes, it has to be manually placed vertically, and if you accidentally forget to return it to the horizontal position, you will only see black in the center rearview mirror instead of following it. That's not all: without opening the tailgate, this shelf cannot be put in its original position, since the movement is limited by glass.

The engine is still only one (a 1,3-liter diesel is coming soon), a 1,2-liter 16-valve with a maximum power of 69 kilowatts, which is a kilowatt more than the old 1,3-liter engine. Given its small displacement and the fact that it doesn't have a turbocharger, the engine is very rugged, probably one of the best in its class. The smooth five-speed transmission is to blame for getting around the city and the suburbs quickly without the need to push the RPM. This one is "shorter" in nature, so about 3.800 rpm is expected at 130 kilometers per hour. Then the engine is no longer the quietest, but within the normal range. And the consumption is moderate; during normal driving (without unnecessary savings), it will remain below seven liters.

Current and average consumption, range (about 520 kilometers) can be controlled using the on-board computer, but with the ability to change the display of information, they are kicked into the dark again. The control button was hidden between the sensors, next to the daily odometer reset button. Competitors have already found that a more practical button is on the steering wheel lever, or at least on the top of the center console. The engine is started by the start / stop button, when we just want to listen to the radio, it is enough to press the same button without pressing the clutch and brake pedals at the same time.

On the road, the longer, wider and longer wheelbase handles very grown-up. It is neither elastic nor resilient - it is somewhere in between. The steering wheel is very light in the city and quite communicative in corners. The position was not bad, given the winter tires (smaller and thinner), and on 16-inch tires it should be half the car. We miss a proposed successor to the GTI.

When it comes to safety equipment, Swift is at the top. All equipment versions come standard with EBD, ESP switchable, seven airbags (front and side airbags, curtain airbags and knee airbags) and isofix child seat anchorages. The car also boasts five stars in Euro NCAP testing. Fair. The richest Deluxe version also comes standard with smart key (start with stop / stop button), height-adjustable leather ring, power windows (automatic lowering for driver only), mp3 and USB player with six speakers, heated front seats. and a few more little things.

This is a lot, and “big” has suddenly become a price too. The price of the most basic three-door model is tens less than ten thousand, the test one is 12.240 and the most expensive (the five-door Deluxe) costs 12.990 euros. Thus, Suzuki is no longer looking for buyers looking for a cheap car with this model, but is competing with brands such as Opel, Mazda, Renault and, wow, even Volkswagen! It's just a pity that the choice of engines is very poor and that it has some "glitches" that are hard to miss.

It's amazing how some cars can affect the driver's psyche. Just a few seconds after I sat behind the wheel of the Swift, I remembered what it was like in those younger years of driving, when the engine had to be fully cranked out in every gear and be sure to downshift with the intermediate throttle. This Swift is a complete, useful city (family) car, but also a joy to drive. It's okay, performance is above average, the chassis is soft in a civilian way, and the seats and interior are generally average. The only important thing is that you can enjoy driving even when driving in restricted conditions. If you're looking for this in a car, you won't miss Swift.

Such large Suzuki, which for decades have been known as the Swift, almost at the same time, from a technical and user point of view, are quite exemplary cars that may not affect technical history, but are quite popular with less busy drivers and users. ... And for good reason. The farewell generation was fortunate enough to be very much like the Mini, which was no doubt another reason for its popularity. Whoever just went was out of luck, but he doesn't seem to underestimate her.

Overall rating (299/420)

  • Swift does not evoke as much emotion as, say, the new Fiesta or DS3, but below the line we can write that for a lot of money you get a lot of music. He missed a four by a hair's breadth!

  • Exterior (11/15)

Cute, but simple enough drawn and not altered enough on the outside.

  • Interior (84/140)

Good roominess and build quality, poor trunk and inconveniently located button between the sensors.

  • Engine, transmission (53

    / 40)

Very good performance for this volume, but unfortunately this is currently the only possible choice.

  • Driving performance (54

    / 95)

The test was carried out on smaller winter tires, but still left a good impression.

  • Performance (16/35)

As it is said: for this engine, the volume is very good, but miracles (especially in maneuverability) from 1,2 liters of volume without a turbine are not to be expected.

  • Security (36/45)

Seven airbags, ESP, isofix and four stars in the NCAP crash tests are standard, several minus points due to water leaking through the windshield and the installation of the on-board computer switch.

  • Economy (45/50)

The price is expected depending on the amount of equipment, the engine is quite economical, the warranty conditions are good.
