Test: Volkswagen Golf 2.0 TDI BlueMotion Technology (110 kW) DSG

The outlook is good, given the new technology, the (traditional) family design and the fact that the predecessor is the best-selling model in Europe. If we add to this the price, which is two thousandths lower than that of a comparable new sixth generation model, then this is no longer just ambition, but realistic expectations. Despite the crisis.

There are no revolutions in appearance (we can safely say, expected here), although on the road the new Golf is much more attractive than in the photographs. During the test, we admired the combination of the black-pearl-white exterior (lighter body and darker rear windows, black sexy little shark fin for the antenna and electrically adjustable panoramic sunroof), as well as some brightness provided by the LED lights.

At the front, there are two bi-xenon headlights that glow in a U-shaped version in the everyday version, while at the rear, the designers, led by the legendary head of Volkswagen Group design, Walter de Silva, opted for double L-shaped headlights with attached dots. Interestingly, Volkswagen head of design, Klaus Bischoff, noted that they were trying to maintain a spacious C-pillar, although the rear view is somewhat limited as a result. Therefore, despite the Park Pilot system, which we had in our test car as an accessory, we would have preferred a rear-view camera, for which you have to pay a modest 210 euros. Front and rear sensors and optical display are often not enough, and frankly, Korean competitors in the best package offer the camera already on the production list.

However, the test Golf delivered what was expected of it: excellent mechanics. We already know both the 150-liter TDI engine and the DSG dual-clutch transmission, as they are registered trademarks of Volkswagen, so only a few words about them. Turbodiesel with a capacity of 2.0 hp is currently the most powerful engine on offer, with the bouncy GTD (184 TDI, 2013 hp) due in April 2.0 and the GTI (220 TSI, 2.0 hp) in the same month. ... You will have to wait until November. next year for the most popular R version (290 TSI, XNUMX "horsepower"). In the case of the engine, the engineers reduced the resistance of the moving parts and also separated the cooling of the engine head and block.

A very pleasant consequence of these two innovations is that the engine has become more economical, and especially on cold autumn or winter mornings, it warms up earlier, and with it the interior of the passenger compartment. The DSG dual-clutch transmission is available in two versions: a seven-speed dry clutch and a six-speed wet clutch. Since the six-speed gearbox is adapted for more powerful engines, we tested this. There is nothing wrong with the combination of engine and transmission, they work quickly, smoothly and, most importantly, quite quietly.

Every new Golf you buy already has a standard Start / Stop system that works well, although the car shakes slightly with every start and the very quiet turbo diesel draws attention to itself with its noise. Well, miracles do not yet know how to work miracles, so the system for shutting down and starting the engine at short stops is more colorful on the skin of gasoline engines due to technical restrictions that do not wake up neighbors at startup.

Thanks to the new platform, dubbed the MQB for flexibility, the Golf is the first Volkswagen model to be designed differently. The front wheels are positioned further forward, which means less overhang over the drive wheels and more space inside. Statistics claim that the new Golf is 5,6 centimeters longer than its predecessor, 2,8 centimeters lower and 1,3 centimeters wider. Interestingly, the wheelbase is almost six centimeters longer, which means more space in the cabin (especially in the back seat, where the new Golf is now more generous with knee room for rear passengers, which was a common complaint from its predecessor). well, 30 liters more trunk.

The 380-liter Volkswagen has caught up with the mid-range of the new competitors as the 475-liter Honda Civic is far ahead of the others, but we think it's good for the Golf to have under the boot (the lower part of the boot is height-adjustable since you can put the shelf in the lowest position ) classic tire replacement. If you've ever used a repair kit, you know what we're talking about. As for the seats, apart from the lack of an electric booster when adjusting the front, only the best. They are stiffer so that the back does not hurt after a few hundred kilometers, with side supports (hmm, even for the more abundant ones) and the latter with Isofix bindings, which should be legalized by other car brands due to their ease of access. The position behind the steering wheel is good as the DSG has no problem with long clutch pedal movements, as well as a chopped-off steering wheel, small steering wheel control levers (which can only be moved with your fingertips) or a large screen in the middle of the dashboard.

Vice versa; a colleague said with a slight laugh that the touchscreen easily handles the size of the TV in his room. With a diagonal of 20 centimeters, the Discover Pro (the best of the five options, as the base is 13 centimeters and black and white) boasts a sensor that detects the approach of a finger, and high-resolution content can be controlled similarly to a smartphone. This means that it also allows you to perform two-finger gestures, such as zooming in or out on the nav map, and moving your finger to scroll left-right or up-down. You don't have to be a technophile to admire it!

With some reservations, the system for choosing a driving profile is also good, with the help of which we hint to the car what kind of driver we are or what kind of will we have on this day. Along with the optional electronically controlled DCC damping (which also affects engine settings and power steering), you can choose between the Normal, Comfort, Sport, ECO and Individual programs. Since Comfort, Sport and ECO are the most extreme options, since Normal and Individual (when you set different parameters of the transmission, steering wheel, air conditioning, engine, lighting, etc.) are just a mixture of the above, we will give them a little more. attention.

With the Comfort program, the damping works much smoother, which is especially noticeable when driving over longer bumps, when the car “French” (although this is no longer the case!) Floats pleasantly. There are restrictions on short bumps, as 18-inch wheels (currently the best you can wish for!) Along with low-profile tires, they also transmit shock to the interior of the cabin. In the ECO program, the most obvious change in DSG performance is the immediate downshifting to sixth when driving in town at 60 km / h. The rev counter with the driver's soft right foot rarely exceeds 1.500, so acceleration is very moderate too.

In principle, there is nothing wrong with this, the main thing is that it does not surprise you on the track when the ACC cruise control is active (which also warns of the possibility of a collision with the Front Assist system and stops the car below 30). km / h) slows down behind the truck in the right lane, you turn into the overtaking lane, which gains these 130 km / h. Everything is for economy, in short, although under 6,4 liters per 100 km with a two-liter engine and wide winter tires we are not arrived. In the Sport program, however, the transmission stays in the most ideal gear for a long time, which provides the maximum possible traction in the back. And honestly, if you look at the specs, you won't be disappointed with the acceleration or top speed.

The technical data page states that you will have to pay $ 32k for a Golf equipped this way. Considering that they will be selling most 1,6-liter TDIs with an average Comfortline package of just under 19k, the figure is skyrocketing at over 30k. But we will defend the agent, as they offered us a very well equipped agent to make sure of all the technical problems, and of course we want to get into a really popular agent one day. Maybe a supertest?

Assuming that the new Golf is on average lighter than its comparable predecessor by about 100 kg (up to 40 kg in electricity, up to 26 kg in engines, up to 37 kg in transmission and chassis, up to XNUMX kg in the body), then combined with the most powerful at the moment we also attribute some sportiness to the turbo diesel and DSG transmission. It's just a shame that the designers killed some driving pleasure with the help of non-disconnectable ESP (you can only disable the traction control system ASR) and borrowed the XDS electronic partial differential lock from the previous Golf GTI, which is practically useless for real. dynamic drivers. Switchable ESP and classic partial lock please!

That we can only speak respectfully of the Golf, despite its modest grievances, is attested to by 29 million vehicles sold and six previous generations. It’s hard for me to admit that I’m only a year older than Pragolf and that after 38 he looks much better than me.
