Test: Volkswagen Golf Variant 1.4 TSI

That's true, but let's be honest, the previous version was introduced only two years ago, so we can say that the Golf with a backpack is still fresh in terms of design. Whether you like it or not is another story. Many people think that the nose and buttocks did not appear on the paper of the same designer. If so, then definitely not in the same time period.

While the face looks emphatically dynamic (especially now that it has slimmer headlights), the rear looks just incredibly serious and mature. And the truth is, we have to agree with that.

However, it is also true that they both work perfectly correctly, and it will be difficult to blame them if we evaluate them separately. Volkswagen also knows how to comfort you by saying that if you don't like the Variant, they have a Golf Plus or Touran for you.

But before choosing one of the ones just mentioned, think a little more about Option. Simply because it is only a few euros more expensive than the Golf Plus and with a comparable engine (for example, a test one), and the Touran, with a more powerful (103 kW), but in terms of volume and technically identical engine, is more expensive by 3.600 euros.

And also because with Varinat you will get an original base. Although 34 centimeters longer than the Golf, it sits on the exact same chassis, which means that inside (when it comes to the passenger compartment) it offers pretty much everything a Golf has to offer.

A refined driver's work environment with well-adjustable seats and steering wheel, good driving dynamics, above average durable materials and, as far as the Highline package is concerned, the right equipment.

The list is so long that it is almost impossible to print on one page, and since the Highline is considered the richest package, it goes without saying that you will be hard pressed to find a better equipped option (unless you grab the accessories list). don't miss a lot of them.

Each Variant comes standard with six airbags, ESP, air conditioning, power windows, car radio with CD and MP3 player and multifunction display.

Highline equipment also includes many decorative and useful accessories, and if so, the list of surcharges seems to include (even more) a necessary accessory to help you with parking.

Volkswagen clearly agrees with this, otherwise it would be impossible to explain the fact that there are five different models available. Well, really, about three; Park Pilot (acoustic sensors), Park Assist (parking assistance) and Rear Assist (rear view camera), and by combining them, five are created.

Indeed, a good four and a half meters of total length is still not so small when they have to be stored in a narrow-sodded box in the center of the city. Find out how big it is when you open the back door. If the seat in the second passenger row seems suitable for a family (read: for children), then in the back it looks like a truck.

It mainly pampers with 505 liters of space (200 more than in the Golf wagon), on the sides and in the double bottom you will find additional boxes, under which there was a place for a spare wheel of the right dimensions (!). 1.495 liters and the best thing about it is that even then it serves a completely flat bottom.

It's a shame that the roll of the boot lid is not the same as we are used to in Škoda, where one free finger is enough to use it.

But the Golf Variant also has an ace up its sleeve - a rich and technically advanced engine range. This may apply not only to the base 1-litre petrol engine (6 kW), but certainly to everyone else. The four-cylinder engine that powered the test variant is one of the main ones when it comes to its power, and one of the best when it comes to price.

But the most exciting thing about it is that it does almost everything that you expect from it. Wide operating range, comfortable driving at both low and high revs, even some sportiness when you feel like it, and low fuel consumption.

On average, he drank 9 liters of unleaded gasoline per 2 kilometers, and with moderate driving, his consumption easily drops below nine liters.

And if you evaluate the new option by what it offers, and not (only) by its form, then there is no longer any doubt. We even dare to claim that it is much newer than many of its (also new) competitors.

evaluation

  • Most would agree that the new Golf Variant is not the prettiest among its competitors, some will even resent it for being too similar to its predecessor, but this one only shows its true trump cards when you start using it. The luggage compartment is mostly large and even expandable, passenger comfort is enviable, and the TSI engine in the bow (90 kW) proves that it can also be fast and decently fuel efficient.
