Test Lattices: Mercedes Benz B 180 CDI 7G-DCT Blue Efficiency

This test B 180 CDI differs from our first test only in two really important things: the chassis and the transmission. For the first one, we wrote last year that it was too hard, as the then test B had an optional sports chassis. He didn't have it, and it was well known behind the wheel. Not because the position on the road would be noticeably worse, steering (for example) less precise or tilting in corners excessively, but because the cushioning of bumps is much better, especially on short bumps where the sports chassis transmitted shocks directly to the rear of passengers. This Tale B is much more comfortable and such a chassis suits its character much better.

Under the hood is the basic version of the diesel with 'only' 109 'horsepower'. For a smaller, lighter car, this would be more than enough, and with the B, such an engine is still satisfactory, but nothing more than that. There are no problems in the city and in the regionals, only on the highway you can sometimes breathe 'on your gills'.

It is, of course, solved by automatic transmission. The 7G-DCT is Mercedes' designation for a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and this one is very suitable for a car (like a normal chassis). The shifts are fast, but not at all jerky, the engine is always in the right speed range, and the steering wheel levers are easy to control manually. But that, hand on heart, is almost never necessary - it’s best to simply let the gearbox and engine do their job. Then consumption can also be small: the test stopped at a round seven liters.

Although the shape of the B is slightly one-room, the interior is not as flexible as it usually is with real one-room cars. But this B also doesn't want to be - it's just an interestingly designed, big enough family car, in which both passengers and the driver feel good. The latter is pampered by the convenient installation of the gear lever (next to the steering wheel), enough equipment, including cruise control and speed limiter, and good seats that allow you to quickly find a comfortable position behind the wheel.

Disadvantages? A little engine power would no longer hurt and a little less diesel noise. And the pre-collision warning system could have been better set up, as it was often triggered in completely safe positions (it was already disturbed, for example, by a car in an adjacent lane on a city two-lane road).

But this B also has advantages: from thoughtfully practical Isofix anchorages to excellent xenon headlights, thoughtful interior lighting, good brakes and a usefully large boot. And prices.
