Why cars are stolen
Some attribute the number of car thefts to the market situation. There is a certain logic to this: in recent years, sales have almost halved, and there are fewer and fewer new cars on the streets. But cars of all ages are moving away from their rightful owners. And we sell more than 1,5 million vehicles a year. This means that there is as much potential "loot" as you want.
The fall in incomes of the population is a good reason for the seizure of "rods" and other tools for illegal fishing. After all, along with cars, spare parts are becoming more expensive. Consequently, the demand for used parts is growing. And when there are not enough "donors", thieves quickly react to the shortage that has arisen. The recipe for good sleep is the same: choose a model that is not popular with thieves. Or insure your helmet and install effective anti-theft protection.
Sources for compiling a hijacking rating
In Russia, there are 3 official sources that provide information for classifying thefts:
- Statistical department of traffic police (State Inspectorate for Road Safety). Practice shows that 93% of car owners report the theft to the police. Information about the number and nature of such reports is received by the traffic police, where it is carefully analyzed and general statistics of car thefts are compiled.
- Database of manufacturers of anti-theft systems. These companies collect data on car thefts that have alarm systems installed. Processing information about stolen vehicles allows them to identify flaws in existing security systems and correct them in the future. Based on the data collected from all the leading manufacturers in the anti-theft systems market, quite reliable statistics can be obtained.
- Collection of information from insurance companies. Insurers keep track of all information about car thefts, since the cost of insurance is often directly related to the position of the car in the theft rating. Data on such crimes will only be sufficiently representative if they are collected from all insurance companies in the country.
Theft counting feature
Theft can be calculated in two ways. In absolute terms: per part of the stolen per year. Or in relative terms: compare the number of models stolen in a year with the number of models sold, and then rank by percentage of theft. The advantage of the second approach is to assess the risk of losing your own car. The disadvantage is that it is impossible to distinguish between generational change and car theft in three years.
However, we felt it was more important to show the picture in relative terms, because with higher sales, each owner is less likely to lose his car, even if it becomes interesting to car thieves.
Car theft statistics
List of the most frequently stolen car brands in Russia:
- VAZ. For many years, cars coming off the assembly line of this manufacturer were the most stolen, because they are easy to break into. As a rule, such cars are stolen for complete disassembly and resale of spare parts.
- Toyota. Quite a popular car brand among motorists, although it is often stolen. Some of the stolen cars are resold, others are stripped for parts and sold on the black market.
- Hyundai. According to statistics, over the past 10 years, its sales have increased several times, while the number of car thefts has increased. Experts predict that this trend will continue over the next 3-4 years.
- Kia. Cars of this manufacturer are in fourth place, occupying a position in the ranking since 2015.
- Nissan. A reliable car with a good anti-theft system, but some models often appear on the wanted list.
The top ten leaders attractive to thieves included:
- Mazda;
- Ford;
- Renault;
- Mitsubishi;
- Mercedes
Producing countries by stolen cars
Attackers aimed at stealing cars show great interest in domestic models. LADA Priora and LADA 4×4 cars are the most vulnerable to car thieves because they are not equipped with reliable anti-theft devices.
Criminals willingly steal Japanese-made cars. Fast and maneuverable cars of well-known brands are always in demand among Russian buyers. In the top three is South Korea, which produces the most stolen cars. It should be noted their optimal price / quality ratio. A list of the most popular models among car thieves is shown in the table below.
Country | Number of stolen cars | Ratio to total number of stolen cars (percentage) |
Russia | 6 170 | 29,2 |
Japan | 6078 | 28,8 |
Korea | 4005 | Nineteen |
EC | 3471 | 16,4 |
USA | 1 231 | 5,8 |
Porcelain | 157 | 0,7 |

Rating of models in Russia with the highest share of thefts (in 2022)
To compile the ranking, we have identified the best-selling models in each class. Then we will look at the statistics of thefts of similar models. And based on this data, the percentage of thefts was calculated. More detailed information can be found for each class separately.
compact crossovers
There are no surprises in this segment. The leader is the ever-demanding Toyota RAV4 - 1,13%. This is followed by the slightly less stolen Mazda CX-5 (0,73%), followed by the liquid Kia Sportage in Russia (0,63%).

Mid-size crossovers
After the 2008 crisis, sales of Honda cars fell, and the number of thefts slightly increased. As a result, the theft rate of the CR-V is 5,1%. The latest generation Kia Sorento is stolen much less frequently. It is still produced for our market in Kaliningrad and is sold new in dealerships. Interestingly, its successor, Sorento Prime, follows just behind with 0,74%.

Chinese hijackers are not interested in the Haval H9 yet. The aging Jeep Grand Cherokee, on the other hand, is interesting. Turnout exceeded five percent (5,69%)! It is followed by the same age Mitsubishi Pajero with 4,73%. And only then comes the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 with 3,96%. In 2017, its share was 4,9 percent.

A-class
A rare for Russia class of urban "compacts" was represented in Russia by four models, three of which are niche. Thus, there is not enough data to build any detailed but correct logic within the class. We can state only one fact: the Fiat 500 turned out to be the most stolen in this class, followed by Smart, and then Kia Picanto.
B-class
According to the AEB, segment B in Russia accounts for 39,8% of the automotive market. And what is in demand in the primary market is gradually moving to the secondary, and from there to the hijackers. The leader of the criminal class, as in the 2017 article, is Hyundai Solaris. Their share in the number of thefts even increased from 1,7% to 2%. The reason, however, is not an increase in the number of thefts, but a decrease in sales. If 2017 Korean CDs were sold in 90, less than 000 will be sold in 2019.
The second row within the class has also not changed. He drives a Kia Rio, but unlike the Solaris, his theft rate has barely changed: 1,26% versus 1,2% three years earlier. The 2019 Renault Logan closes the top three most stolen B-class models, and the 0,6 Lada Granta takes its place with 2017%. Similar figures for Logan - 0,64% of the number of cars sold, stolen in 2019.
Model | Sales | Stolen | % theft
1. | Hyundai Solaris | 58 682 | 1171 | 2,00% |
2. | Kia Rio | 92 475 | 1161 | 1,26% |
3. | Renault logo | 35 391 | 227 | 0,64% |

9. | Lada Roentgen | 28 967 | 14 | 0,05% |
10. | Lada Vesta | 111 459 | 51 | 0,05% |
C-class
In the Golf class, in contrast to the B segment, the leaders in the number of thefts have changed. In 2017, the Chinese car was replaced by the Ford Focus. Now it has moved to fifth place, in first place is Geely Emgrand 7. Due to modest sales in 2019, 32,69% of cars of this model were stolen. This is a record result not only for the class, but for the entire automotive market.
The Mazda 3, once popular with car thieves, came in second. After falling sales, the share of stolen cars rose to just 14%. Mazda is followed by Toyota Corolla with a share of 5,84%. In 2017, the Skoda Octavia and Kia cee'd finished second and third in the class, respectively. However, due to the modest sales volumes of the Japanese, their share in the theft rates has declined.
Model | Sales | Stolen | % stolen
1. | Geely Emgrand 7 | 780 | 255 | 32,69% |
2. | Mazda 3 | 931 | 131 | 14,07% |

10. | Kia cerato | 14 994 | 40 | 0,27% |
DE classes
We decided to combine the massive D and E segments due to the blurring of the boundaries between models of different generations. Where once the Ford Mondeo or Skoda Superb were class D, today their dimensions and wheelbase are comparable to the Toyota Camry, which is usually classified as class E. In fact, this class is subjective with more blurred boundaries.
Due to Ford's withdrawal from the Russian market and its ridiculous sales, Ford Mondeo is the leader here in thefts with 8,87%. It is followed by the Volkswagen Passat with 6,41%. The top three is headed by Subaru Legacy with 6,28%. Such a radical change is not due to an increase in demand for the stolen Mondeo, Passat and Legacy, but to modest sales of these models.
The leaders of anti-racing in 2017 remain at risk in 2019 as well. Toyota Camry and Mazda 6 this time took the fourth and fifth places. And only Kia Optima dropped to ninth place with 0,87%.
Model | Sales | Stolen | % of the number of robberies
1. | Ford Mondeo | 631 | 56 | 8,87% |
2. | Volkswagen Passat | 1608 | 103 | 6,41% |
3. | Subaru Legacy | 207 | thirteen | 6,28% |
4. | Toyota Camry | 34 017 | 774 | 2,28% |
5. | Mazda 6 | 5271 | 114 | 2,16% |
6. | Subaru Outback | 795 | nine | 1,13% |
7. | Skoda excellent | 1258 | 12 | 0,95% |
8. | Hyundai Sonata | 7247 | sixty five | 0,90% |
9. | Kia optimum | 25 707 | 224 | 0,87% |
10. | Kia Stinger | 1415 | 6 | 0,42% |
What cars are the least popular with car thieves around the world?
According to statistics, since 2006, the number of stolen cars has decreased by 13 percent annually. We've compiled a list of the models that are the least likely to be stolen, so you can rest easy if you own one of these cars.
TOYOTA PRIUS
Another hybrid on our list. The likelihood that a Toyota Prius will attract the attention of thieves is very small, at least according to statistics. As the first mass-produced hybrid car, the Prius has become the most popular hybrid on the road, recently surpassing three million vehicles sold worldwide. But the story is not about the sales success of this model, but about the distrust of car thieves for hybrid cars. Read above to find out why.
Lexus CT
Discover our "top-of-the-line" Lexus CT, an entry-level hybrid. The CT 200h is powered by a 1,8-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with 98 hp. and 105 Nm of torque in combination with a 134 hp electric motor. and 153 Nm of torque. According to the latest available data (for 2012), there were only 1 thefts per 000 units produced. Apparently, thieves have the same excuses for not stealing a hybrid car as ordinary people do for not buying one. You can read more about these excuses here.
INFINITI EX35
Next on the list is the Infiniti EX35. This model is equipped with a 3,5-liter V-6 engine producing 297 hp. The Infiniti EX35 is the first production car to offer an "Around View Monitor" (AVD), an integrated option that uses small cameras at the front, side, and rear to give the driver a panoramic view of the car when parking.
HYUNDAI VERACRUZE
The Hyundai Veracruz is ranked fourth on the list of the world's least stolen cars and is the only Korean-made car in the top ten. Production of the crossover ended in 2011, Hyundai replaced it with the new Santa Fe, which can now comfortably accommodate seven passengers. Whether this innovation will find a response in the hearts of thieves, time will tell. We invite you to familiarize yourself with this new car in the article: Hyundai Santa Fe vs. Nissan Pathfinder.
SUBARU FORESTER
The Subaru Forester is sixth on our hit list of the most stolen cars this year with a theft rate of 0,1 per 1 units produced in 000. The fourth generation of the 2011 Forester marked the transition from a traditional minivan to an SUV. Yes, the Forester has evolved over the years and now we have a midsize crossover.
MAZDA MIATA
In ninth place on the list of least stolen cars is the popular Mazda MX-5 Miata sports car, a front-engined, rear-wheel-drive two-seat light roadster. The 2011 Miata is part of the third generation model range launched in 2006. Miata fans are looking forward to the debut of the next generation model that Alfa Romeo is currently working on. What made this model so infamous among car thieves is anyone's guess.
VOLVO XC60
It may not be news that Volvo cars are considered the safest, but now the company can safely say that its cars are the least stolen of all. In the top five of our ranking is the 60 XC2010 model from the Swedish manufacturer. Volvo recently made a minor update to the 60 XC2014 that slightly redesigned the crossover but retained the same 3,2-hp 240-liter six-cylinder engine under the hood. The sportier T6 model is available with a 325 hp 3,0-liter turbocharged engine.

How does theft happen
In most cases, theft occurs due to the negligence of the owner of the car. It is rare that a car thief has good equipment that can set off an alarm.
Very often theft occurs in the most banal way:
- Criminals take advantage of the loss of vigilance. The most common thefts occur from gas stations, where drivers often leave the car unlocked, and some do not even turn off the engine. All the attacker has to do is to get a gas pistol out of the tank and run towards you;
- Loss of vigilance. After the criminals identify the car they saw, they hang the can, for example, on the muffler or inside the wheel arch. Many hang some kind of load weighing 500-700 grams on the wheel. This gives the impression that the wheel is unscrewed. Having set the car in motion, the robbers begin the pursuit. As soon as the motorcyclist stops to check for a breakdown, the car is promptly stolen;
- Violent car theft. In this case, you are simply thrown out of the car and left in it. In this case, as a rule, the robbers go far enough to call the police, write a statement and do other things to catch the criminal;
- Car theft using a code breaker. Sophisticated car thieves have such devices. The process is very simple: the attackers wait for the victim to activate the car alarm. At this time, the code is captured from the key fob to the alarm unit. This gives criminals freedom of action. All they have to do is press a button and unlock their car;
- Car theft. One of the most common types of theft, because no one will think that the car signaling towing has been stolen. Even if this is the case, the first thing that comes to mind is towing the car due to insufficient parking. Most alarms will not save you from this, as the shock sensor will not work in this case.
As you can see, there are many ways to steal. In addition, thieves do not sit still and improve their methods every day. It is very difficult to prevent a car from being stolen if criminals have already targeted and set it in motion.
Professional car thieves can steal a well-guarded modern car in 5-10 minutes. Most thefts are technical in nature, that is, using special electronic and mechanical means, experts say. “Recently, for cars with keyless entry, it was a relay, i.e. extending the range of the traditional key. In the case of cars with ordinary keys, this means breaking the lock with the help of very reliable “folders” and writing an additional key into the memory of the standard immobilizer.” - says Alexey Kurchanov, director of the company for the installation of immobilizers Ugona.net.
After the car is stolen, it ends up in a pit, where it is checked for bugs and beacons, and then to a workshop to be prepared for pre-sale preparation. As a rule, cars leave Moscow for the regions. Another option is analytics. Old cars are usually used for parts. The cost of spare parts for used foreign cars of the premium segment is not lower than for new models that are in decent demand, including used ones.
How to protect your car from theft
To reduce the chance of car theft, the vehicle owner can:
- install an alarm system (but this measure is not the most effective, as the hijackers have learned how to hack into the most modern security systems);
- use a secret (without activating the secret button, the car will not go anywhere);
- unlock the immobilizer (the device will not allow you to start the engine);
- equip the vehicle with a transmitter (GPS);
- use anti-theft locks (mounted on the gearbox or steering wheel);
- Apply airbrush elements to the car: drawings, ornaments (this will allow you to quickly identify the car and find it among the "stolen").
To reduce the risk of misappropriation of personal property, it is enough for the owner to drive the car to the garage or leave it in a guarded parking lot.
An alternative way to protect against car theft is a comprehensive insurance policy. But not all companies fulfill their contractual obligations by deliberately underestimating the amount of damage. Justice must be restored in court. Statistics show that the insurance company pays the injured party monetary compensation, which does not exceed 80% of the value of the vehicle (including depreciation).
In order not to become a victim of auto theft, you should use the maximum possible amount of protection.

More expensive doesn't mean safer
Last month, the All-Russian Union of Insurers (VSS) published a rating of cars in terms of the degree of protection against theft. The rating was compiled according to three criteria: how protected the car is from breaking (250 points), from unauthorized starting and moving the engine (475 points) and from making a duplicate key and changing the key, body and chassis numbers (225 points).
The most protected from theft, according to the BCC, was the Range Rover (740 points), and the Renault Duster was at the bottom of the list (397 points).
The most interesting thing is that the safety performance of a car does not always correlate with its cost. For example, the economical Kia Rio scored 577 points, while the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 SUV scored 545 points. The Skoda Rapid with 586 points beat the Toyota RAV 4 with 529 points, despite the fact that the first car costs almost half as much as the second.
However, not all industry experts agree with the above estimates. Realistic values largely depend on the vehicle equipment. For example, if it is equipped with a proximity access system (when the car is unlocked without a key and started with a button on the dashboard), the likelihood of theft increases many times. With rare exceptions, these machines can be opened in seconds, but the same cannot be said for non-touchless models.
