– Shift into a lower gear as late as possible after depressing the clutch pedal. After changing gear, let's skillfully release the clutch so that there is no jerk, says Zbigniew Veseli, director of the Renault driving school. In this way, we continue braking until it comes to a complete stop, after which the foot brake can be used. This braking method is good for everyday driving, but is especially recommended in mountainous terrain where we often brake downhill.

Save money with engine braking

When braking with the engine, we do not use fuel, unlike driving in neutral without a gear engaged. This is a huge advantage considering current gas prices and the savings we can get. And we save not only on fuel, but also on spare parts, because when braking with the engine, we will replace the brake pads and discs much later.

“It also guarantees us safety, because the car is much more stable in gear than in neutral, and we also have more control over it when our immediate reaction is needed,” experts say. It is much safer to brake with the engine than with the foot brake when driving in mountainous terrain and when driving with a large load, when our brakes wear much more.

Watch out for slippage

Before we start using engine braking, let's analyze the steps that need to be taken to make it happen correctly, smoothly and safely. Inept downshifting can cause the car to bounce hard and the engine to run loud due to high RPMs. In such situations, when braking, especially in winter, you can skid.
