Toyota Avensis 2.2 D-4D Wagon Executive (130 kt)

Let me remind you that Avensis is a very Europe-oriented Toyota. The successor to the Customs (E) has meanwhile received a minor overhaul, and Toyota has put exactly what you see in the photos at the top of its range: a van body, the most powerful turbodiesel and the richest equipment to go with it. Buy Avensis more expensive right now will not work.

The combination seems to be ideal for long trips, mainly because of the location. The Avensis also has well-balanced rear-seat knee room, and the boot is a fine example of its kind with a base 475 and an expandable 1.500 liters. A pleasant gesture of the designers was also small but useful boxes under the bottom of the trunk, and less pleasant - an inconvenient button for lowering the rear seat back. If you want to make full use of the trunk, you need to lift the rear bench seat forward, pull out the cushion, and then fold the backrest. We also know cars with less complex space expansion, but so the Avensis still doesn't deserve a particularly bad rating.

On longer trips, the driver and passengers will also appreciate the interior materials, handling ergonomics and equipment. The Executive package means everything you can get in an Avensis, including leather on the seats, auto-switching of all four windows in both directions, cruise control, rear park assist, power seats, a good sound system, xenon headlights with dimming light and whatnot. more. For more comfort and safety. A special chapter is the gauges, which hint at better tech, but the yellow-orange color doesn't have much nobility, and the interior seems to lack a more European design approach.

And it's clear: the engine. It can only be so powerful if it is of the D-CAT type, that is, with a cleaner catalyst, with a final maximum power of 130 kilowatts and a maximum torque of 400 Newton meters. To some extent, these capabilities are known in the worst light at the very beginning, just above idle, when the torque has not yet increased enough to facilitate (faster) starting. To do this, you need to add a little more gas or raise the engine speed to at least 2.000 per minute. Above this value, the torque rises almost too quickly, so that the inner wheel wants to shift to neutral in second gear, and even in third gear on worse asphalt.

The electronics, which could otherwise be shut off, quickly intervenes and prevents the wheel from spinning. A cold engine heats up quickly and immediately runs "soft", while a heated engine spins up to 4.600 rpm without resistance, which in fifth gear means 210 kilometers per hour on the meter. When you then shift into sixth gear, the latter still pulls noticeably and the speedometer needle stops at just under 230 kilometers per hour. However, this turbodiesel (also) has another slightly unpleasant feature, namely, after removing the gas, even if the rpm is "correct", it takes about a second to wake up again after adding gas.

The turbocharger and its inertia take a toll. However, in combination with the engine, its good partner is a gearbox with well-calculated gear ratios, but above all with excellent shift lever movement: with the right resistance, short and precise movements, excellent power feedback and a compact lever attachment. There are some significantly better ones on the market.

Now supposedly clear; that "Cat" is just the designation for the engine (but of course it refers to the catalytic converter), the cleanest and at the same time the most powerful turbodiesel in the Avensis. Even on German motorways you can be among the fastest with it. Here and there, some of the participants in the movement of a more sports car can also be emotionally affected. Nothing special.

evaluation

  • As they say: an ideal car for long-distance travel, although it is easy to drive on country roads and around the city. With this engine, this Avensis is also quite sprightly, almost sporty. A dynamic, but a little boring car. Emotionless.
