Toyota Aygo 1.0 VVT-i+

Let's start with this test to change it a little less technically, because you were able to read the test of the same car in the 13th issue of Avto magazine this year. Yes, it was a Citroën C1, one of the identical triplets next to Toyota and Peugeot. But make no mistake, the cars (you can call them that because they are really small) are already being produced at the Toyota plant in the Czech Republic, which is certainly a guarantee of the quality of the final product. Toyota is known for its stringent quality control criteria before leaving the factory. In short, C1 is already with us and now we are happy to accept Aigu. Why with pleasure?

The sight of Toyota Aygo immediately evokes positive emotions that give rise to good health, and for those who feel good, the corners of the lips constantly curve upward. We didn't really find any reason for the bad mood outside in Aygo. The mask, with its large three-oval Toyota logo, acts as if the car is smiling faintly all the time. Both headlights give it a friendly look that blends beautifully with the soft lines of the entire body.

But Aigo not only looks friendly, but is already somewhat sporty aggressive. Just look where and how high the lower edge of the rear side window rises! With a slight bulge serving for the modern mounting of taillights and indicators, everything is already very automotive erotic. Well, if eroticism is a longing for love, then in the automotive life it means a craving for driving. So "aigo, jugo...", ma, let's go together!

Sitting in a small Toyota is undemanding, since the large side doors open wide enough. Even in a sitting position, it is soft and comfortable, only in the knees it is not so comfortable. Before we found the correct seating position, we had to play a little with the lever to move the seat back and forth. When talking about the correct sitting position behind the wheel, the knees should be slightly bent, the back should be on the back, and the wrist of the outstretched arm should be at the top of the steering wheel.

Well, in the Aygo, we had to stretch our legs a little more than we wanted, and therefore put the seat back more upright. And this applies to drivers taller than 180 cm. The smaller ones did not have such a problem. Therefore, we can expect that most of the fairer sex will ride in it quite comfortably. When we look at the Ayga, we have to admit that this machine is more than clearly intended for women, but it is also designed for those men who have headaches from being too long (hmm .. Machine length, what are you thinking?). Its 340 centimeters (well, again, centimeters), you insert it into every, even the smallest hole. This is certainly a good thing, especially if we know that there are fewer and fewer free parking spaces on city streets.

Parking with this little Toyota is real poetry, everything is very simple. The edges of the car are not the best seen, but due to the small distance between all four corners of the car, the driver can always at least guess how much more he needs to get to the obstacle in front and behind. However, this is something you will never succeed in modern limousines or sports coupes. At least not without the PDS system.

Inside the car, the front seats have plenty of room and width so you won't bump your co-driver shoulder to shoulder every time the steering wheel is turned while the car is moving.

The story is different behind. The little Toyota takes two passengers to the back bench, but they will have to show a little patience, at least in the leg area. If you are from Ljubljana and want to party with Aygo towards the coast, passengers traveling in the back will have no problem. However, if you are from Maribor and would like to do something like this, you will jump on a beer at least once so your passengers can stretch their legs.

With such a small trunk, we have always missed the simple solution that Toyota also knows. In the Yaris, the small trunk problem was ingeniously solved with a movable back bench, and we really don't understand why Aygo didn't solve the same, as it would be much more useful and comfortable this way. This leaves you with only two medium-sized backpacks or suitcases.

The gear lever did not give us any headaches, as it fits well in the palm of our hand and is precise enough so that even when we are in a hurry, there will be no unpleasant jamming. We also boast many small drawers and shelves in which we store all the small items we carry with us today. In front of the gear lever, two cans fit into a pair of circular holes, and a few inches in front there is room for a phone and wallet. Not to mention the pockets in the door and on the top of the dashboard. Only in front of the navigator there was a lack of a box that could be locked (instead, there is only a large hole through which small objects roll back and forth).

Examining the interior, we did not miss a small detail that will be useful to all mums and dads with small children. The Aygo has a switch to deactivate the front passenger airbag to keep your little one safe in the front seat in their sink.

Otherwise, this is one of the safest small cars. In addition to the front pair of airbags, the Ago + boasts side airbags, and air curtains are even available.

On the road, this little Toyota is very maneuverable. Common sense, of course, speaks in favor of its urban and suburban use, because it is native here, not least because it was created for urban life. If two people go on a long journey and there are no problems, you only need to take into account the lower speed of movement (the maximum speed according to our measurements was 162 km / h) and the fact that they will feel more shocks than, for example, in a large tourist car.

A small three-cylinder grinder with a VVT-i valve in the engine head is perfect for this task. Light car with 68 hp. starts with the proper liveliness and accelerates to 100 km / h in 13 seconds. If you need more power, you can already talk about a true mini sports car. But somehow you have to wait. It looks like we won't be seeing anything but a small diesel anytime soon, apart from this gasoline engine in the bow of a small Toyota.

But since we are not saying that there is any urgent need for this, this Aygo is a modern, cute and very “cool” ATV. And while young people (who they like best) don't invest much in economy (at least those who can afford it), we can boast of moderate fuel consumption. In our test, he drank an average of 5 liters of gasoline, and the minimum consumption was 7 liters per hundred kilometers. But this is almost insignificant at a price of almost 4 million tolars for such a small car.

Our Aygo + with air conditioning and a sports package (fog lights, alloy wheels and a cute circular tachometer) doesn't come cheap at all. Also, the price for the Ayga + base is not much better. Aygo is expensive, nothing, but probably aimed at those who are willing to pay more for a nice, safe and quality small city car.

Overall rating (271/420)

  • Aygo is a very beautiful and useful car, designed primarily for city streets. Safety, workmanship, economy and modern appearance are its main advantages, but little space in the rear of the car and high price are its disadvantages.

  • Exterior (14/15)

    Nice and well-built baby.

  • Interior (83/140)

It has a lot of drawers, but little space on the back of the bench and in the trunk.

  • Engine, transmission (28

    / 40)

For a city car, power is just right if you are not too demanding of drivers.

  • Driving performance (66

    / 95)

Extreme maneuverability is a plus, stability at high speeds is a minus.

  • Performance (15/35)

We lacked more flexibility in the engine.

  • Security (36/45)

This is one of the safest among small cars.

  • Economy

It consumes little fuel, but this price will not be for everyone.
