Toyota Corolla TS hybrid 2.0 Dynamic Force Executive (2019) // Zelena Corolla

Auris did its job well, cutting the time it took Toyota to bring the Corolla to a level suitable for European customers, which we have in some areas, especially in materials, workmanship, noise levels and more. Higher standards than other models. Peace. And yet: even after fame and history, it couldn't compete with the Corolla name, so it's no surprise when (whether it was planned from the start or just a reaction to market reaction) Toyota announced the Corolla was back, Auris said goodbye.

The Corolla has sold over 20 million units in 12 years.of which one and a half million are in Europe, so it is clear that Toyota will carefully consider every detail of a new model before shipping it to market. Therefore, it is all the more surprising when it is possible to send the same model to the market with a defect that worries not only European, but also other buyers. When it comes to the new Corolla's infotainment system, social media reviews have been really harsh. And yes, it is also right. So, let's start with the only noticeable drawback of the Corolla - the infotainment system. Many will not even be bothered by this, and those who only use the radio in the car can safely skip to the next paragraph, but otherwise: the system is too slow and not flexible enough. The home screen always has a navigation map (the rest of the segments can be customized, but not this one), and its map is always facing north (within the navigation itself, you can also set a 3D view, for example, but not to the home screen). In addition, the system does not have Apple CarPlay and AndroidAut (which, it should be noted, are coming soon and it will be possible to update the infotainment systems in existing cars), and the graphics in it are more unfinished, unlike, for example, digital gauges, which were at the test Corolla.

So, we've passed the biggest minus, and now we can focus on the rest of the Corolla.... The gauges, as written, are completely digital, but they also have, interestingly, left and right analog speedometers (completely unnecessary for a hybrid), as well as right temperature and fuel quantity (which can easily be part of digital gauges). In short: the idea is great, the execution is (only) good. With more flexibility (especially with the ability to choose your own data and colors), the rating would be even higher. But when we add the head-up screen to the digital gauges (which deserves a high five), the impression the Corolla (despite the infotainment system) leaves on the driver when it comes to communicating with him remains positive.

What about driving? The new XNUMX-liter hybrid drivetrain was a hit.. It's not as economical as the 1,8-litre, but the difference is about half a liter (we'll know the exact figure when we take the 1,8-litre hybrid version as the norm) - a low price for everything that more powerful brings . assembly of the power unit. It's not just about top performance (and while it's nice to feel like this Corolla accelerates well even as the speed increases towards "German" freeways), it's more about how sovereign it is at lower speeds. Where the weaker unit will already be climbing at higher speeds due to running out of power or torque, it spins at less than two thousandths and helps a lot with the electrical part of the drive and is generally very quiet smooth but determined. If you plan (including due to the difference in price, which is about two thousand) to cut for a weaker hybrid, we warn you: you should not drive a stronger one for a test drive.... Otherwise, you will find yourself in a hopeless situation when you have to make a final decision.

The Corolla was built on the new Toyota TNGA global platform (TNGA-C version), which also created the new Prius and C-HR.. It is therefore larger than the Auris, which is most evident in the station wagon version of the TS, which has a wheelbase 10 centimeters longer and thus more space in the rear seats, congestion, which was otherwise a major disadvantage, which, in addition to Information- the entertainment system of the five-door Corolla ranked better in the last comparison test in the previous edition. The Corolla station wagon is more than enough roomy for a family car, whether it's roomy in the back seat or in the trunk.

The interior is now very close to European automotive taste. (but certainly not as strict and geometric as some German ones), well made and crafted, with a complete package of assistance systems (with active cruise control, which also stops and starts the car, but the truth is that the latter does very, maybe , even too softly) it is good to help with the gas pedal) and such a Corolla is not only very (and sounds) comfortable, but also very safe car. We could have wanted a little more drastic intervention in the lane keeping system, but on the other hand, some drivers liked the fact that it did not try to turn the steering wheel with the same amount of torque as we are used to on some European cars. ...

And the chassis? Low tires may be too stiff, but our test tire had additional 18-inch wheels, and if you stay with 17-inches, the experience is better, positioning on the road (which cannot be described as sporty, but quite dynamic and predictably safe) but I wouldn't be hurt by that.

Such a Corolla TS is not an athlete, although it has a pleasantly sporty (or at least dynamic) appearance, but a very competent family caravan of the lower middle class, which will be for those who do not want to give up performance due to low consumption, but do not want to buy a diesel , a great choice - especially when it gets the promised infotainment upgrade. If I had it now, I would also get a higher rating, as the rest of the car definitely deserves it. If …

Overall rating (446/600)

  • Unlike the five-door version, which was pushed back a bit by a cramped rear bench in the bonnet comparison test (in addition to the infotainment system), the Corolla station wagon is a refined and spacious family car.

  • Cab and trunk (92/110)

The five-door version is cramped in the back, no caravan due to the longer wheelbase, but the seats could be more comfortable.

  • Comfort (78

    / 115)

The silent drivetrain makes it comfortable for passengers, but the infotainment system and connectivity let it down.

  • Transmission (59

    / 80)

A more powerful hybrid drive is a great choice. Powerful yet very economical.

  • Driving performance (74

    / 100)

The Corolla is not an athlete, but it is light years ahead of the Auris and is comparable to the best in its class.

  • Security (89/115)

There is no shortage of assistive systems, but it is true that some of them could work better.

  • Economy and environment (54

    / 80)

Such a Corolla is not cheap. There will be quite a few fuel savings, but a thousand lower prices won't be superfluous.
