Toyota Hilux Extra Cab 2.5 D-4D Country

We have written many times about one of the most famous pickups in the world, the Toyota Hilux, most recently in the form of the AM 15-2006 test, in which the Japanese took a modest fifth place in a direct comparison of five pickups. ... Due to its weakness, the in-line four-cylinder turbodiesel compared to its competitors contributed a significant share to the lower ranking.

The Japanese have already taken a nap and announced that the sixth-generation Hilux will soon receive the three-liter turbodiesel carried over from the Toyota Land Cruiser and will upgrade the existing two and a half liters to 88 kilowatts (120 hp), slightly more than the current 75 kilowatts. km), which took care of the power in our third test of the new Hilux (we first published it as Hilux Double Cab City (two types of seats, better equipment) in AM 102-5).

Both times red, with an attractive frame, chrome accents, two pairs of side doors and a decent rear seat, and equipment that rivaled most city cars, the Hilux Double Cab City was in a completely different class than the Extra introduced this time. Cab Country. It is white, no widened fenders, no chrome trim, instead of fog lights, it has two large holes in the bumper, black mirror covers, there is only one door in the cabin.

This Hilux is built to serve, work, perform tasks that are (and still are) done by real pickups. It does not match the "city" pickup trucks that sometimes carry goods and "appear" in the city center. Although the Hilux Extra Cab has only one pair of doors, there is a spare bench behind the first seats that can accommodate two people, but not too long as the padded bench quickly becomes too stiff and due to the lack of an internal handle, off-road hooks sliding on body from all sides, quickly turn into a nightmare.

The 2-liter Common Rail turbodiesel isn't good for an entertainment pickup (think fast acceleration from traffic lights to traffic lights!), But it does well in a working Extra Cab. Power is not enough, but with enough torque (5 Nm @ 260 rpm) a kilowatt (2400 @ 75 rpm) is enough for quite decent field work, with a gearbox, partial differential lock and four-wheel drive, this Hilux can overcome many corners of the forest or sovereignly ride the field path, stumble in deep mud and break through where most others cannot.

The leaf-sprung rear is light when empty and when crossing bumps (especially on wet surfaces) indicates you want to go your own way. The rugged chassis is designed to work on normal roads with "balloon shoes" (which cushion the bumps in the ground on the bogie tracks) and with the Hilux suspension design, it's married to body roll and sway. But it's known that the Hilux isn't a comfortable road cruiser, it's a powerful work beast that also claims to be a truck with a loud engine that is surprisingly quieter on the highway.

The soundproofing of the passenger compartment is better than in the fifth generation Hilux, as is the equipment, the shape of the dashboard and the selected materials. The last Hilux test model had Country equipment (rural equipment is another proof that this Hilux is not meant to be installed, but its full working use in the first place), which is the ticket for this car, but already offers ABS and two on air cushion and height-adjustable steering wheel and an additional cabin heater.

Compared to the City hardware, this is Spartan hardware (not from inside the adjustable side mirrors, the air conditioning was in the test car for an extra charge), although you won't run for martyrdom because the cabin feel is good. ... There's plenty of storage space here, and the dashboard doesn't feel like a pickup truck at all.

Built for the job, it feels difficult to drive, but many will be surprised at the ease with which the Hilux steering wheel turns. A precise gear lever with long strokes and an even longer shaft gets heavier, sometimes even like a truck, which somehow matches the Hilux's turning radius. He also dislikes parking in the city center.

Hilux can be purchased in three versions. With a double, extended or single cab. The first has a caisson with a length of 1520 millimeters (carrying capacity 885 kilograms), the second - 1805 millimeters (carrying capacity 880 kilograms), and the length of the most working caisson among all Hiluxi, Single Caba, is 2315 millimeters (carrying capacity 1165 kilograms). . It is quite clear which Hilux is the hardest working.

It is also understandable that with the Extra Cab you can always accommodate two more passengers in the back seat, suitcase and use the boxes under the removable rear seat, which is not possible with the Single Cab. However, we hope that you will rarely use the back bench as this is only an emergency.

evaluation

  • This Hilux doesn't look cool, but with black bumpers, it's not easy. The Extra Cab is a performance machine that can tempt even four passengers (two for strength) and do what is dirty off-road transportation without hesitation. Undernourishment in kilowatts is less familiar to him than with the more showy Double Cab. And the kilowatts are coming!

We praise and reproach
