Toyota and Panasonic will work together on lithium-ion cells. Start in April 2020

Panasonic and Toyota have announced the creation of Prime Planet Energy & Solutions, which will design and manufacture rectangular lithium-ion cells. The decision was made just over a year later after both companies expressed their willingness to cooperate in this market segment.

New company Toyota and Panasonic - batteries for themselves and for others

Prime Planet Energy & Solutions (PPES) is dedicated to producing efficient, durable and good value for money lithium-ion cells that will be used in Toyota vehicles, but will also hit the open market, so over time we will likely see them in cars of other brands.

The agreement between the two companies differs from the existing collaboration between Panasonic and Tesla, which gave the American company exclusivity over certain types of cells used in Tesla (18650, 21700). Panasonic couldn't sell them to other car manufacturers and had tough hands when it came to supplying any type of parts to the automotive industry.

It is because of this that Tesla, experts say, has batteries that stand out in the market, and Panasonic cells cannot be found in any other electric vehicle.

PPES will have offices in Japan and China. Toyota owns 51 percent, Panasonic 49 percent. The company will officially launch on April 1, 2020 (source).
