Toyota Land Cruiser 3.0 D-4D Executive

And yet: the environment and the person change, along with him male "toys" change. Thus, the Land Cruiser is no longer a military vehicle and a work vehicle, but for some time and increasingly is a personal vehicle that does not want to go to the poor countries of Africa, but is located between the yuppies of the old and new continents.

SUVs have been a fashion for a while and a means of transportation that people treat with approval and envy. The Land Cruiser is an excellent representative of this class; it is (at least five times) large, has a solid but nevertheless beautiful appearance, and this commands respect.

The driver immediately feels the power: because of the size that he perceives while driving, and because of the height of the seat, he gets a sense of dominance over the movement, or at least over most of it, that is, over the cars. Psychologists call this feeling a multifaceted complex, and those who do not (yet) know it should, if they can, get behind the wheel of a Land Cruiser. And seduces herself a little.

So far, this SUV is only available with a diesel engine, and it is unlikely that the gasoline will be more popular, even if it is much more powerful. Turbodiesel is also one of the reasons the driver feels good from the start. Immediately after turning the key, when the engine starts, the diesel emits a characteristic sound signal, which is muffled throughout the entire trip, i.e. in any conditions; both sound and vibration typical of diesel engines. In fact, we hardly felt the latter inside, only the gear lever was shaking.

The design of this engine is suitable for an SUV: at three liters, it has “only” four cylinders, which means large pistons and long stroke, which again means good engine torque. In addition, the turbo diesel has a modern design, so it has direct injection (common rail), as well as a turbocharger and intercooler. All this makes it friendly to drive and (depending on the situation) does not feel very thirsty.

You cannot choose any combination between two bodies, two gearboxes and three sets of equipment; if you are looking for the most prestigious Executive equipment (which includes a power sunroof, leather upholstery, color touchscreen, navigation device, electric seat adjustment, superior audio system, electronic shock absorber adjustment, possibility of separate temperature control in the second row of seats and many electronic aids) You are doomed to a long body (five doors and round forty inches longer overall) and an automatic transmission.

It has four gears and matches well with the performance of the engine; it is fast enough and in most cases works (shimmers) gently. The plant promises virtually unchanged performance over a manual transmission, and the engine torque always successfully compensates for the losses created by the hydraulic clutch.

The automatic transmission works well on all the bases for which such a Land Cruiser is intended: from roads in the city and beyond to highways, and on the ground it performs just as well, if not better. Of the additional methods, the transmission only works in winter conditions (starting in second gear), and its only serious drawback is braking in the field. There, an electronic DAC (Downhill Assist Control) should come to the rescue, but it still does not provide the same conditions as a manual transmission.

The worst choice for such a technically equipped Land Cruiser is steep winding asphalt. Immediately after the gas is off, the transmission shifts into fourth gear (it lacks some artificial intelligence), the body leans sharply (despite the damping being at its hardest position) and the ESP, which in Toyota sounds like VSC (Vehicle Stability Control), quickly and boldly intervenes in the operation of the engine (torque reduction) and in the brakes (individual braking of the wheels); Therefore, I do not recommend without hesitation to compete with local dignitaries.

The desire to get closer to the passenger car already noticeably interfered with the once well-nailed mechanics: the Cruiser 120 has permanent all-wheel drive and the “annoying” stabilization electronics are automatically turned off only when the center is turned on (100%). differential lock, i.e. when you drive off-road and demand more from the Cruiser than anything else on earth. Therefore, an experienced driver cannot fully use the four-wheel drive when he is not yet on the ground, but when the ground under the wheels is no longer ideal: for example, on gravel or on a snowy road. The Cruiser, however, still has a solid chassis with wishbone trailing arms, a rigid rear axle and a floor that is off the ground.

The story of the two sides of the coin is well known: you have to step high into a high cabin. Since the Land Cruiser is now also designed to be transported to glittering events, I have reason to assume that the lady in the closet will walk in and out of it. And it won't be easy for her. Namely ladies. But some help is provided by an additional step at the threshold, which is sheathed with rubber and therefore does not slip.

It is much easier when the passengers are in the car and the car is moving. In the first seats, the interior space is luxurious, in the second row (just the third folding bench) a little less, and in the last (half-folding at the side window) it is noticeably less. Together with the Executive equipment package, you will thus receive content that ensures comfortable seating, comfortable driving and a comfortable journey.

Spaciousness, good seats, and a durable leather feel are the most conducive to feeling good, and of course the rest of the equipment adds something. He fixates only on small things; according to the Far Eastern tradition, the buttons (usually large ones) are scattered around the room and are illogically located: for example, the controls for the (5-speed) heated seats and the activation of the center differential lock are located together. The touchscreen is friendly, as is the navigation (although it still doesn't work here), but you won't find levers on the steering wheel or on the steering wheel for the audio system.

Some buttons are also not backlit, only the main sensors can be adjusted for illumination, and the buttons are difficult to recognize manually and by the amount of data from a modest on-board computer. The hideously accurate Germans could no doubt organize teams of all forms more efficiently and logically around the cockpit, but it is true that they would also charge a hefty price for the product.

The price of such a Land Cruiser seems high in absolute terms, but if you add comfort, size, technology and, ultimately, image, you will bring quite a lot of cars in front of the garage for that money. In an SUV. And this is good. If there is an Executive, otherwise there will be no spare wheel on the tailgate (in this case, it will be under the trunk), but for good parking assistance, you should still deduct the necessary money; There is very little Land Cruiser behind the driver's seat.

Thus, in most cases the driver will like it. The main gauges are large and transparent, the same goes for the secondary display at the top of the dashboard, the power steering is relatively stiff and therefore restores a good steering feel as well as good shift lever movements. The Land Cruiser is ready for everyday city commutes, weekend trips or long trips. The latter actually cuts down on the worst, as its top speed isn't exactly enviable, which means the engine will slow down a bit when the car is fully loaded. Do not hurry!

You'll have a lot more fun when you have to climb up (or on) the highest pavement, when the snow falls, or when you want to get some exercise at a job that doesn't even deserve the name of a trolley track. The only weak point of such riding is the installation of the front panel, which gives a discount for each trip through the water near the maximum allowable depth. Otherwise, everything is fine: the belly boldly lifts off the ground (and can be raised another 3 centimeters from the back with a button), all-wheel drive with an adjustable torque ratio between the front and rear axles (front / rear from 31/69 - 47/53 percent) is good copes with its task, and in extreme situations, the full closure of the center differential comes to the rescue.

If they can handle the tires of your choice and don't get stuck in the stomach, the Land Cruiser will overcome the obstacles. The tax on games is not too high. While you are driving in moderation, good 11 liters of gas oil will be enough for 100 km; if you plow a circle of Vrhnik tanks, it will be a little more than 16; all other driving conditions will be intermediate.

I dare say, with a Toyota like this, you will fit equally well in a tuxedo when you are driving to a reception dedicated to the father of our nation, or when you are looking for a front license plate in sportswear in a deep puddle. just drove. Mud Cruiser, sorry, the Land Cruiser will always be equally ready to go.

Overall rating (332/420)

  • The new Land Cruiser 120 is a very good compromise between on-road and off-road usability at a relatively affordable price. The engine is very good, it lacks power only for traveling. It impresses with its spaciousness and driving feel, while the ergonomics leave plenty of room for designers to maneuver.

  • Exterior (11/15)

Land Cruiser continues to follow global SUV design trends – or even record them. The accuracy of execution is slightly higher.

  • Interior (113/140)

There is a lot of space in the front and middle, and very little in the third row. Worst of all is the ergonomics (switches!), The air conditioning is not top notch.

  • Engine, transmission (34

    / 40)

The engine is technically modern, but developed on the basis of its predecessor. The gearbox sometimes lacks fifth gear and better electronics support.

  • Driving performance (75

    / 95)

The high center of gravity and tall tires do not provide good road performance, but the Cruiser still leaves a very good driving experience.

  • Performance (21/35)

Ride quality is not the brightest spot; flexibility (thanks to the automatic transmission) is not a problem, the driving speed is too low.

  • Security (39/45)

The brakes are great for an SUV! It has a variety of active and passive safety features, including an air curtain and ESP. It has no xenon headlights or rain sensor.

  • Economy

In terms of weight and aerodynamics, the consumption is very favorable, in terms of mechanics and equipment, the price is also favorable. Traditionally, the loss in value is also relatively small.
