Toyota Verso1.8 with valve

A glance at our roads reveals that there are quite a few Coroll Versos on them, which speaks in favor of the popularity of this model. Thus, the novelty inherited the good name of its predecessor, and the good genes were modified by Toyota engineers. The design is an upgrade to the existing model, which was placed next to the new Avensis with a fuller bonnet, new bumper and rear-facing headlights.

The new design style brings an unobtrusive line from the bottom of the front bumper to the rear axle, along which the line rises and ends with a roof spoiler. The taillights are also completely new, and the Verso's stylistic transformation is a complete success as the Verso is also the successor to the Corolla V design and not just an idea. From the Japanese, we are used to the fact that the generations of models are not alike, so the Verso in this story is even more special.

Increased dimensions, the new Verso is 70 millimeters longer and at the same height 20 millimeters wider, with a crotch stretched by 30 millimeters on the sides, a little more sheet metal is introduced in which the wheels are lost, so the Verso performs slightly less than the Corolla V from the side consistent, but still very similar at first glance to its predecessor.

You don't need to be a versologist to tell the new from the old. The engineers were very smart in creating the new generation as they kept all the good features of the previous model and improved them even further. The increased wheelbase brought more space inside.

There's a lot of that in the front seats and in the second row, and sixth and seventh seats (the Versa can be bought as a five-seater or seven-seater) will be enough for power and especially for short distances, which have been improved. before these measures, so that they, like the other five, can change the inclination of the backrest. Toyota claims the Easy-Flat has a remarkable system for folding the five rear seats into a flat floor. Works simply and without a doctorate from the instructions for use.

The longitudinal offset solution (195 millimeters, 30 millimeters more than its predecessor) of all three separate second type seats is also remarkable. Access to the sixth and seventh seats is still difficult, but because of the large side doors, they are slightly smaller than the Corolla V, and they are more or less suitable only for children.

For example, if you are an adult and up to 175 centimeters tall, you can easily sit on the "luggage" seats, only a smaller person will have to sit in front of you, otherwise you will not have enough knee room. It is also impractical or safe to "load" the driver on the steering wheel. But don't count on a view from sixth and seventh.

The rear windows are clearly too small for a safari. Previously, with a seven-seater configuration, the trunk was only 63 liters, but now it is 155 more acceptable (in operation the sixth and seventh places), and even more in length and width. All plus passengers and luggage. The loading height is advantageously low, there is practically no edge, a double bottom (the test Verso used putty instead of a spare wheel).

So far, everything is good and correct, but Toyota managed to spoil the impression of a completely new interior with a lower workmanship a little (in the test case, some contacts were really unsuccessful, and errors were visible without using a ruler). We hope the test piece was the exception, not the rule. Most of the plastic on the door and on the bottom of the dashboard is hard and scratch-sensitive, while the top of the dashboard is softer and more pleasant to the touch.

Very interesting intertwining of feelings. On the one hand, the disappointment of diligence when assembling the dashboard, and on the other hand, a wonderful feeling in the fingers when working with the steering wheel buttons and the radio. Such a sweet and informative review. All buttons and switches are illuminated, except by the rules it is always dark for adjusting the side mirrors.

The designers have moved the sensors to the middle of the dashboard, turned them towards the driver, and installed a trip computer window at the far right end, which is also one-way and is controlled by a button on the steering wheel. It feels taller in the front, the steering wheel grips well, the headroom is one room and of course is adjustable as it should be.

There are enough boxes for storing small things: there are two closed boxes in the door in front of the passenger (upper with air conditioning, lower for blocking) and one under his buttocks, two less useful slots on the center console (under the gearbox). , there are two storage compartments on the handbrake lever, behind them is a closed “locker” accessible from another bench seat that supports the inside elbows of passengers in the front seats, which can also be placed under the door mat. middle seat passengers.

As befits a true family member, the front seatbacks also have tables and pockets. The front seats have been widened and we already have a redesign idea: Toyota, making the seats even wider and less padded, and a little lateral grip won't hurt either. This is already nice, because while driving, it feels safer to lock the car, but the Verso locking system can be unnerving too.

Example: When the driver gets out of the Versa after stopping and pulls on the rear side door handle (for example to grab a bag), it does not open because the door must first be unlocked with the button on the driver's door. You know, when you do this five hundred times, it's a real routine. I like the double unlocking of the front passenger door. We are satisfied with the number of sockets, the AUX interface is also suitable, it's a pity that a slot for a USB dongle was not installed next to it.

The smart key, which is available starting with Sol equipment (hereinafter referred to as Terra, Luna, Sol, Premium), further improves the already good ergonomics. Technically Verso stepped forward. Mounted on a new platform, the 1-litre petrol engine (Valvematic) has been improved and now has more power, less thirst and less pollution.

In the test package, the engine was mated to a continuously variable Multidrive S transmission with a conveniently raised gear lever and steering wheel lugs. The motor loses some liveliness due to the gearbox (the factory acceleration data also speaks about this), but it is lively and powerful enough for a family driver (or driver) with average requirements. We especially appreciate the sound comfort of this motorized Versa.

The engine is loud only when accelerating above 4.000 rpm, and quite loud (read: quiet) even on the 160 km / h highway, when the wind noise around the body is the main one on stage. CVTs are characterized by a consistent response and a suitable transmission to suit the driving style. The Multidrive S has seven pre-programmed virtual gears and a sport mode that increases the revs in practice and makes the ride a little more lively.

When driving very quietly (then a green "eco" is written inside the meter) the Verso also runs at a good thousand rpm and, if necessary, switches to the red field when the throttle is engaged. On the highway at 130 km / h, the meter reads 2.500 rpm, and the Verso is a pleasure to drive under these conditions. Multidrive S also allows manual gear changes using a lever or steering wheel lugs.

The gearbox (surcharge of 1.800 euros, but only in 1.8 and seven-seater configurations) due to the speed of command execution, which invites us to use the latter, which is one of the best parts of this Toyota for car dealerships. These Toyota owners are unlikely to be chasing corners as the Verso is not designed to do it. Not at all in conjunction with this easy-thinking gearbox. The fuel consumption in the test was mostly constant, it ranged from nine to ten liters, but we ran the test, and with drive aimed at economy, we managed to achieve a consumption of 6 liters.

Despite the increased torsional rigidity of the body, the Verso is mostly comfortable to drive, and sometimes, like the new Avensis, it surprises with some "ups", but this one "slipped" out of the hole. In terms of chassis comfort, for example, the Grand Scenic is more convincing.

The new Verso has a smaller cornering angle than its predecessor. Clarity is better than its predecessor thanks to taller seats, larger side mirrors and additional windows in the A-pillars. It is worth equipping the rear with parking sensors, which were also accompanied by a camera in the test case, which transmitted the image directly to the interior mirrors (standard starting with Sol equipment).

Face to face. ...

Vinko Kernc: The combination may not be the best on the market, since this segment is dominated by the “love” for turbodiesels, and we are not yet used to automatic CVTs in Slovenia. In practice, however, the deal is helpful and friendly. The rest of the Verso is quieter and more comfortable than its predecessor, but the rest is more or less imperceptibly better. Probably - in the broadest sense of the word - the best Toyota now.

Matevž Koroshec: No doubt the new Verso has been redesigned, more technically advanced and now without the Corolla name. But if he had to choose between old or new, he would rather point the finger at the old. Why? Because I like it better, I sit better in it, and mainly because it remains the original. "

Overall rating (326/420)

  • He scored many points for this Verso, which is good proof that Toyota sells a lot of cars with him.

  • Exterior (10/15)

We've already seen quite a few good minivans. Also better done.

  • Interior (106/140)

If you are looking for a spacious vehicle, the Verso is perfect for your family. We were disappointed with the quality of the interior decoration.

  • Engine, transmission (49

    / 40)

The gearbox kills some of the "horses" brought in by the work of engineers, and the chassis is sometimes unpleasantly surprised with some kind of hole.

  • Driving performance (57

    / 95)

Praise short stopping distances and stability. The gear lever is conveniently closed.

  • Performance (25/35)

The manual Verso is faster and also has a slightly higher final speed.

  • Security (43/45)

No "more prestigious" systems, but basically a fairly safe package of active and passive safety.

  • Economy

Average price, unsatisfactory warranty and fuel consumption depending on driving style.
