Toyota to revive Mirai as long-range hydrogen car

The second generation of the Toyota Mirai is yet to come, and it will be full of technology and more autonomy than its predecessor.

The new Toyota Mirai returns after five years of life on the market to reaffirm its place as a benchmark in fuel cell technology applied to electric cars. However, the Mirai will boast a new generation of hydrogen car, which is based on Toyota's TNGA modular platform and is now rear-wheel drive, promises more autonomy, space for five passengers and will be available in two versions in the US: XLE and Limited.

Among the novelties that the Mirai will have in the United States is a more aerodynamic and refined design, in addition, the body is now lower, longer and wider, and includes 20-inch alloy wheels for the Limited version, while the version XLE features 19-inch wheels.

Digging a little deeper into Toyota's TNGA modular platform, the new Mirai, and its traction will be rear rather than front, will also accommodate five passengers instead of four.

While no further details have been released on how the new Mirai's fuel cell technology has been improved, Toyota promises that autonomy will be 30% higher than its predecessor. With three full hydrogen tanks, the autonomy can be much higher than 403.8 miles (650 km).

The new generation Mirai goes from 154 hp. and 335 Nm of torque up to 180 hp. and 300 Nm. These figures suggest that the hydrogen model reaches a top speed of 108.7 mph (175 km/h).

The hydrogen car will be equipped inside with a 12.3-inch multimedia touchscreen display with 14 JBL speakers including a subwoofer and amplifier, as well as compatibility with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa. The XLE package includes dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, manual rear-seat sunshades, and power door mirrors.

The Limited trim comes standard with a color head-up display with speedometer and navigation, three-zone automatic climate control, heated and ventilated front and rear seats, and a rear touchscreen control panel with sleep function. This option also includes Smart Parking Assist as standard and a double fixed power panoramic sunroof.
