Test drive Toyota Yaris: successor

The new generation Toyota Yaris promises more modern equipment thanks to Toyota Touch and more interior space than its predecessors. Test version with a 1,4-liter diesel engine.

The Toyota Touch system with a 6,1-inch color touchscreen is one of the most modern and convenient multimedia solutions available today in the small class. In addition to intuitive sound control and the ability to display data from the on-board computer with impressive graphics, Toyota Touch has a Bluetooth module for connecting to a mobile phone (Yaris not only has access to the phone's phone book, but can also connect to major Internet portals such as Google. social networks such as Facebook, etc., which is something you cannot get in any of the competing models), as well as ample opportunity to expand functionality with additional applications.

The Touch & Go navigation module costs an additional BGN 1840, and the rear view camera is part of the basic version of the system. In both theory and practice, Toyota Touch will appeal to buyers who like this type of technology, but they should keep in mind that the system is only standard on the top two equipment levels – Speed and Race. An interesting detail is that the acoustic reverse parking assistant does not come with a rear view camera, but is offered as an additional accessory for 740 leva.

The interior of the Yaris does not hide big surprises, the driving position and the overall impression of ergonomics is good - typical for the brand. The controls have moved from their previous position in the middle of the dashboard to where they are in most cars - behind the wheel. Convenience in everyday use is marred by just two small exceptions: the first is the USB port in the glove compartment, which is hidden in a rather inaccessible place, and if you don’t know exactly where to look, it can take a while to find. Another not entirely suitable solution in the interior is the control of the on-board computer, which is carried out by a small button located next to the display under the control devices, i.e. you have to reach over the steering wheel to get to it.

Good science lesson

The turn of the ignition key brings up a good old friend, the 1,4-liter common rail engine, which is usually a little noisy for its build breed until it reaches optimum operating temperature, but generally behaves quite cultured. The transmission's six gears shift easily and precisely, and the 1,1-ton car accelerates strongly in each of them as long as the revs exceed 1800. The maximum torque of 205 Nm provides the Toyota Yaris with excellent traction during intermediate accelerations. and speed is gained with ease, unusual for a diesel unit.

One of the most positive innovations in the third edition of the Yaris is related to road behavior - the car unexpectedly enters a corner and remains neutral long before the intervention of the ESP system, body roll is also much weaker than in the previous generation. model. However, as is often the case, agility sometimes comes at a trade-off with ride comfort - in the Yaris's case, it's a rough transition over bumps.

Logically, one of the most frequently asked questions about the Yaris diesel engine is its actual cost. With a relatively quiet ride, consumption is usually about five liters per 100 km. The average measured value in the test is 6,1 liters, but this is a consequence of driving in some unfamiliar conditions for such a car, for example, dynamic tests for acceleration, driving behavior, etc. In the standard cycle of economical driving of motor-motor and sports The Yaris 1.4 D-4D registered a very good 4,0L/100km.

Perfectly in place

The Yaris tries to make it as easy as possible to wander through the urban jungle - the seat is pleasantly high, the front seats are wide and very comfortable, the visibility from the driver's seat is one of the best in the class. An unpleasant surprise in urban conditions is an inexplicably large turning radius (12,3 meters to the left and 11,7 meters to the right).

Toyota seems to have had very good and not very fruitful days designing the Yaris' interior. Thanks to the extended wheelbase and intelligent use of the usable space, there is enough space in the cabin. The number and variety of storage spaces is impressive, the trunk holds an impressive 286 liters (only the practical longitudinal adjustment of the rear seat, known from its predecessor).

When choosing materials in the cabin, things are not so optimistic - most surfaces are hard, and the quality of the polymers used is definitely not the best that can be seen in today's small class.

The Yaris performed brilliantly in Euro-NCAP crash tests, with seven standard airbags receiving a maximum five-star rating. In addition, auto motor und sport tests clearly show that the braking system of the model also works efficiently and very reliably.

There remains the question of the price of the car. The Yaris starts at an attractive BGN 19, but the Speed-level diesel model we tested is priced at almost BGN 990 – a pretty hefty sum for a small class car that still seems largely justified given the rich standard equipment.

Evaluation

Toyota Yaris 1.4 D-4D

The new Yaris offers state-of-the-art equipment and a high level of safety and is also more fun to drive than its predecessors. However, the feeling of quality in the cabin does not fully match the price category of the car.
