Trimmer - which one to choose for the garden? Recommended hand trimmers

Do you have a small garden where it will be difficult to operate the mower? Or maybe you need a reliable device that will help you carefully mow the grass around walls, fences and gazebo posts? In both cases, you will definitely need a good gas or electric trimmer. We suggest what a model should have that will last for several years, and which option should be chosen.

Electric grass trimmers - what to look for? Featured Models

As the name suggests, electric hand trimmers require access to electricity. The way it is supplied to the engine depends on their subtype: they may either need to be permanently connected to an outlet, or they may be battery-powered. In the latter case, they can work wirelessly - after charging.

The advantage of both types of trimmers is an attractive price. The cheapest models can be bought for just a few dozen PLN, while the cost of mid-range devices ranges from PLN 200 to PLN 300. An additional advantage is their low weight - the reference model from the brand 4garden APK3022 weighs only 2,5 kg. What, besides the price, should you pay attention to when buying in order to choose a model that will last you for several years?

Among other things worth considering:

  • Delivery type - of course, wall-powered trimmers require a constant connection. However, this can be a problem for people who don't have access to a nearby garden food source. Running cable from home may require a long extension cord that needs to be maneuvered properly. Moreover, the longer the cable, the more the voltage drops, and hence the power of the device. In such a situation, it is best to choose a wireless model, i.e. cordless trimmer that needs to be charged before use. However, they are usually more expensive than network ones, so if there are no problems with access to the outlet, you can safely stay with the wired option.
  • Mok - is expressed in Watts, usually in the range of 500-700 watts. However, you can easily find more powerful models, such as the NAC BE140-SW-S electric scythe, whose power is 1400 W and the price is within 300 zł. Obviously, the higher the power, the greater the cutting force of the grass.
  • maximum speed - are expressed in revolutions per minute and this is what defines them. The higher it is, the more efficient the work will be. The aforementioned NAC model is a whopping 8500rpm, while the MAKITA UR3501 is a 1000W model delivering 6500rpm which is also a very good result. Does this mean that the more watts, the higher the speed? Not necessarily, as the 550-watt model HECHT 530 proves - in her case, it is as much as 10 rpm.
  • Battery capacity (applies to cordless trimmers) - the principle "the more the better" is confirmed again. This is due to the fact (and the power - the higher, the more electricity it consumes), how long the device can work on a single charge. The standard capacity is about 2000 mAh, but you can also find models for 1300, 3000 mAh and more - as is the case with the DeWALT DCM561PB model with a 5000 mAh battery.
  • Cutting diameter - expressed in centimeters. The larger it is, the more the area is mowed at the same time. It can be less than 25 cm, or it can exceed 40. Too large, however, can make it difficult to trim hard-to-reach places, such as, for example, the gaps between the fence and the building, but it will speed up the mowing of the entire garden.
  • The stick can be adjusted - manual garden trimmers come in two types: with a fixed rod and telescopic, allowing you to adjust its length. The latter option is suitable for especially tall or relatively short people. The possibility of adjustment offers, for example, MAKITA DUR181SY.
  • Cutting tool type - either nylon fishing line, or plastic or metal knives. The line will easily handle cutting grass, and knives may be more suitable for areas where it is easy to find a protruding root or a larger stone that will break the line.
  • head type (applies to string trimmers) - there will be three to choose from:
    • guide - as the name implies, the most serviceable. When a part of the fishing line breaks, you have to pull it out yourself for further work.

    • semiautomatic - in this case, the fishing line will come out almost by itself; all you need to do is keep your head on the ground.

    • Automatic - the most maintenance-free model, the line always goes out by itself and does not require such control as in the previous two cases.

Gas trimmers - what to look for? Featured Models

In the case of these devices, it should be borne in mind that they weigh much more than in the case of electric models. A petrol trimmer weighs an average of about 6kg (of course, you can hit both lighter and harder), so it is recommended to use it with a support belt and straps that take weight off the arms, also transferring it to the shoulders and back.

This type of trimmer is a good alternative to electric models, especially in the case of large gardens - they are very powerful and do not need to be connected to an electrical outlet. They are driven by a fuel engine. It's also a good solution when your terrain is very uneven; the lawn mower may not be able to handle it, and the electric trimmer may be too weak. However, it should be borne in mind that the engine in internal combustion devices is quite loud, so it is recommended to use ear protection. What to look for when buying it?

  • The weight - of course, the lower it is, the less stress on the spine and arms should be expected. You can find both five- and nine-kilogram models.
  • Mok - usually reaches more than 1000 W, in the case of especially powerful models, however, you can also find a value in excess of 2000 W (for example, NAC BP620-38KA-T with a power of 2794 W).
  • maximum speed – usually exceeds 8 rpm. As with electric motors, the higher the trim, the more efficient the trim will work.
  • Cutting diameter - usually more than 40 cm. And here again: it is worth adjusting it to real needs, the size of the garden and the number of hard-to-reach, cramped places.
  • Fuel tank capacity - it depends, among other things, on how long you can expect to work on a single hedge trimmer thread. In the case of the FIRST 3KM model, you can expect a large capacity - up to 1,2 liters.
  • Attaching the harness, harness and goggles to the set – thanks to this, there is no need to buy additional accessories.
  • Cutting tool type - it can be a nylon line, a cutting disc or a combination of line with knives. The choice depends primarily on the preferences of the buyer.

Hand trimmer - gas or electric, which one to choose?

Both solutions have their advantages and disadvantages. Undoubtedly, a petrol trimmer will be the best solution for use on complex, complex and large areas. An electric trimmer, on the other hand, will work in small gardens to cut the lawn in front of the house (by the sidewalk) or near the fence, as an aid to the mower. Moreover, the former are also recommended for professional work: mowing urban areas or in forest areas, where grass is rarely mowed and requires really high power. The choice of garden trimmers is really great - choose the device that will best allow you to care for your garden.
