TSR - Traffic Sign Recognition

Opel's Alert System integrated into the FCS, where a camera recognizes road signs and warns the driver (also called the Opel Eye).

The TSR system, developed by GM / Opel engineers in collaboration with Hella, consists of a camera equipped with a high-resolution wide-angle lens and a number of processors. Fits between the windshield and the rearview mirror to frame road signs and road markings. Little more than a cell phone, it is capable of taking 30-second photos. The two processors, using special software developed by GM, then filter and read the photos. Traffic Sign Recognition reads speed limit and no-entry signs and warns the driver when the speed limit ends. The warning looks something like this: Warning: there is a new speed limit!.

Depending on the lighting conditions, the system begins to detect and re-read signals at a distance of 100 meters. First, he focuses on the round signs, then he determines the numbers indicated inside them, comparing them with memorized ones. If the photo matches the image of the road sign in the vehicle software, the sign is displayed on the instrument panel. The system always highlights the most important information for road safety, filtering out all signals that can confuse the driver. If it detects two road signs that are very close to each other, special instructions such as a driving ban take precedence over a possible speed limit.
