The engine needs oxygen to operate. It usually pulls it out of the surrounding air. And that's what it uses to burn fuel before it gets into the cylinders. As a rule, it is amount of oxygen used during this combustion, which will determine its power.

Simply put, the role of a turbocharger is to increase the amount of oxygen used by the engine. And this is by acting by squeezing. When the air is compressed, there will be a lot more oxygen for combustion, a lot more fuel will be burned in the cylinders and therefore a lot more horsepower.

How does a turbocharger work?

As long as it is connected to the compressor, the latter will also start rotating. At around 100 rpm, it compresses the ambient air so that more is drawn into the engine's intake circuit.

But in addition, the system uses only air for combustion. Thus, it is more efficient, but at the same time much less polluting.

And to top it all off, the turbocharger offers the advantage of being very easy to install... What's more, it can be used in both competition vehicles and conventional vehicles.

Disadvantages of a turbocharger

Eh yes! While the advantages of turbocharging are numerous and undeniably attractive, this system also has some serious disadvantages.

First, it does harder to pump out exhaust gases.

Secondly, it can slow start a car.

Third, in order to function well, it needs regular maintenance... It is quite fragile and too high temperature, lack of lubrication or dirty oil can cause failure. The turbo may also require the use of a heat exchanger. In case the intake air gets too hot and removes its effects, it can be used to cool it down.

And fourth, he can imagine risk... If the fins are really not balanced properly, they will cause vibration. And it can be very dangerous if the car is moving at high speed.
