Outdoor motion sensor - which one to choose?

A motion sensor is a device that can increase your safety. Which outdoor motion sensor to choose to meet your expectations? What features might be useful? How to choose and connect a detector? We advise what to pay attention to and what mistakes to avoid.

How to choose a motion sensor for a private house?

Motion detectors are associated with the automatic switching on and off of the light. This basic feature definitely makes life easier for the users of these devices as well as saving them time. A properly selected external motion sensor also increases the security of the facility.

How does an outdoor motion sensor work?

Motion detected within the detector's coverage area triggers certain functions. As for street motion sensors, they allow you to turn on the lamp when you enter the garage, enter the room or open the front door of the house. You no longer need to look for a switch that is hard to see in the dark. All you need to do is enter the detector's coverage area and the light will turn on automatically.

Are there motion and twilight sensors - how do they differ?

A device that reacts to moving dots is a motion sensor. Upon detection of a moving object, the sensor activates its built-in components, causing, for example, lighting or alarms to be switched on. Both applications are ideal for single family homes.

The twilight sensor turns on the light when it gets dark. When dawn comes, the lamps go out. Such a sensor only responds to changes in light intensity from outside. Movement is not fixed in any way and does not affect the operation of devices.

Outdoor motion sensor - what to look for?

When searching for the right motion sensor, you will come across different types of motion sensors. IR detectors and microwaves are available on the market.

PIR sensor, i.e. passive infrared

Infrared sensors are so-called passive motion sensors. They do not detect movement itself, but react to large temperature changes. A person radiates heat of different intensity depending on the part of the body. PIR sensors are designed to take this fact into account and are able to identify people, distinguishing them from objects that are characterized by a uniform temperature. In addition, they may not notice the presence of small moving objects, preventing them from triggering an alarm or lighting in response to the presence of an animal.

PIR sensors work best inside buildings in a constant temperature environment. When it comes to outdoor use, infrared motion detectors can be problematic - in some situations, large temperature differences can unnecessarily excite the detector. On a frosty day, the sensor may react, for example, to an approaching hot car. On the other hand, when it is hot outside and the person's body temperature is close to the ambient temperature, the sensor may not detect a moving person.

Outdoor motion sensors, for microwave ovens

Microwave devices, i.e. active devices require very fine tuning. Incorrectly set sensitivity can cause false alarms. This is because the sensors emit electromagnetic radiation that can be distorted by wood, drywall or glass. Waves can also penetrate walls and doors and then activate the detector even if there are no moving objects in the field of action. The emitted microwaves do not pose a threat to human health. This type of motion sensor is recommended for outdoor use.

Where is the best place to install a motion sensor?

The outdoor motion sensor must be installed in such a place that it has the maximum possible field of action. Of course, nothing can cover this. Place the detectors in places where they do not register movement outside your property - you will avoid false alarms caused by, for example, passers-by. passers-by

Outdoor motion sensor - how to connect the device?

To properly connect the motion sensor, follow the instructions. Different models may have different installation method and location requirements. You can choose to mount the sensor directly on the wall, on special bases or brackets. You may need to reconnect the power and receiver cables if you want the device to activate the lights. Wireless sensors must also be set up according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

Outdoor motion sensor - what mistakes to avoid?

When buying a motion sensor for installation outside a building, there are a few things to pay attention to. Due to the fact that the sensor will be exposed to the elements, make sure the model you choose operates over a wide temperature range. Another important feature is the tightness of the devices. It would be good if the devices were not excited when the animals passed through the field of operation.

Examples of motion sensors and their prices

There are many types of motion sensors on the market. Their prices start from a few dozen zlotys. A high-quality Eglo Detect Me sensor costs about PLN 100. Made from weather resistant plastic.

Installing an alarm system with a motion sensor outside the house will ensure the safety of you and other households. When, by the way, the system is integrated with lighting at the entrance, in front of the gate or near the front door, this further increases the comfort of using the house. Choose the right sensor so you never have to find the switch in the dark again.
